The Research
Committee coordinates the identification of needed research
in the field (see Research
Agenda), initiates the Requests
for Proposals (RFP) for NACADA research
grants, reviews grant applications
and recommends grant recipients. Additionally the
Committee advises researchers on the conduct of their
advising related research (including submitting to present
at the annual
and regional
NACADA conferences) and selects the Student Research Award
winner for the National
Awards Program for Academic Advising.
Committee
Goals (2008-2009):
Conduct a Research Symposium
Pilot
Expand Research Registry
Make the Common Reading Program a
regular function at national and regional conferences.
Place Common Reading support materials on the NACADA
website so that members can conduct parallel programs
at their home institutions.
Complete monograph, Scholarly
Inquiry in Academic Advising.
Continue research grant review
process.
Continue research preconferences
at all regional and national conferences
Committee
Objectives:
Advance the relationship between
good academic advising and student success and persistence
identified as a key component of the association's Research
Agenda.
Work with NACADA Journal
Editorial Board to promote research at regional and
annual conferences.
Continue research workshops/concurrent sessions at
regional and national levels re: research design and
methodology, grant writing, etc. Provide standardized
Power Point presentations for distribution to regional
committee members and ease of presentation by same.
Make clear distinction between research award winner
(completed student research) and research grant recipient
(research funding for upcoming research in the field).
Recipient of Student Research Award will serve as
a Research Committee member for two subsequent years
following receipt of the award.
Solicit research grant and award winners to present
results of their studies at NACADA conferences and submit
results as proposed manuscript(s) for publication in
NACADA Journal.
Keep grant proposal deadlines
in line with the academic and NACADA year. Deadlines:
November 1 (for funding in following year) and March
15.
Announce grant recipients annually but honor recipients
at completion of their grant funded research.
Update Committee membership to allow for more than
one active member from each region. Veteran members
to make up award and grant selection team.
Implement Discussion Board for Research Registry members
and Committee members to promote the mentoring of research.
Begin the process for establishing a "research
primer" with examples and models for members interested
in research but not currently in a research based degree
program.
