2003 Post-Conference Unit Report

 

Commission/Interest Group:   Advising Education Majors Commission   

 

Co-Chairs:   Karleen Edwards and Lee Kem   

 

Summary of Annual Meeting at National Conference (agenda items, issues, discussion topics, announcements, etc.)

Agenda items:

  • Discussion of acceptance of Interest Group as a Commission.
  • Nomination of president and election of officers
  • Enlistment of members for the list serve
  • Recognition of presentations
  • Round Table discussion announcement
  • Interest group evaluation
  • Topics of interest for list serve discussion and areas for presentations/research

 

Meeting:

Forty members were present at the interest/new commission meeting. Information was shared by Karleen and Lee about the granting of Commission status and the new responsibilities and opportunities provided through this move. It was decided that Karleen and Lee would remain as co-chairs until the elections. Karleen was nominated as president for the upcoming elections. Lee was elected as vice chairperson of membership responsible for the list serve and webpages. Lisa Richardson, Adelphi University , was elected vice chairperson for publications and workshops.

 

Individuals were provided an opportunity to join the list serve. Discussion centered on how we could connect to develop and share in workshops and research. Lisa will coordinate this effort. The members presented nine workshops about advising education majors. Collaboration in presentations and research will be encouraged.

 

There were ten presentations by the Advising Education majors Commission members:

  1. A winter Advising Program for Students who are on Probation or have been Dismissed form Education Programs
  2. No Child Left Behind-Implications for Advisers
  3. Let's Play A Game
  4. Advising Post-baccalaureate initial Teacher Certification Students
  5. Advising Education Majors
  6. Collaboration on a Colloquium for new Students
  7. The ins and outs of Advising: An Integrated Approach to Advising
  8. Electronic Teaching Portfolio: Documenting Teaching Performance and Refection
  9. Teacher Education Students' Satisfaction with Academic Advising Services
  10. So You Don't Like To Read

Members were encouraged to attend the Round Table Topics: (1) What Do our Education Majors Really need to know and When? and (2) Successful Advising practices for Education Majors. Facilitators are Tom Avants and Jim Russell.

Twenty-eight responded to the Interest Group evaluation. 99% "agreed" or "strongly agreed" with the topics of discussion and actions taken. 1% strongly disagreed with no additional comments indicated.

The concept of sharing areas of interest for linkage leading to research and presentation was discussed. Members listed areas of interest. These will be posted on the list serve for discussion and linking of members.

 

New Business:

  1. Election of two vice chairpersons
  2. Steering committee volunteers
  3. Topics for discussion on list serve

 

Approximate Number of Commission/Interest Group Members in Attendance:   40   

 

Critical Issues of Concern or "Hot Topics" Identified:

  1. Collaboration for research and presentations was discussed.
  2. Members shared areas of interest for posting and discussion via the list serve.

Unit Goals and Objectives for Next Year:

  1. Election of president (chair)
  2. Increase discussion via the list serve about advising education majors topics.
  3. Proposal for a pre-conference workshop to address issues related to advising education majors
  4. Increase membership and participation at national and regional conferences.
  5. Discussion about participation in recognition awards for Fall 2004 

Future Activities Planned:

  1. Seek funding for special projects and activities (i.e., Drive Ins, recognition awards).

 

Volunteer Opportunities Available Within the Unit:

Members interested in serving on the steering committee were asked to volunteer. Thirteen members volunteered.
