Commission/Interest
Group:
Advising Administration Commission
Chair:
Alice Reinarz
Summary
of Annual Meeting at National Conference (agenda
items, issues, discussion topics, announcements, etc.)
Alice
Reinarz (chair) made several announcements about new and continuing
programs for Advising Administrators. She drew attention to resources
for administrators included in the NACADA Clearing house. She also
reported that the first Advising Administrators Institute in San
Antonio in 2003 was described as very positive by attendees at two
sessions (registration numbers exceeded available spaces in the
original single session that had been planned). She thanked members
(and prospective members) for visiting the Advising Administration
Commission table during the Commission/Interest Group Fair. She
also encouraged commission members to take advantage of time for
"Roundtables" discussions following the Commission Meeting. Attendees
at the Commission Meeting who were not on the list serve were able
to sign up to be added to the group.
A
highlight of the meeting was the presentation of the 2003 Service
to the Advising Administration Commission Award to Susan Campbell
, Executive Director of Advising and Academic Resources at the University
of Southern Maine . Jayne Drake , Vice Dean of the College of Liberal
Arts at Temple University , had nominated Susan for the recognition
with the enthusiastic support of her President and colleagues at
the University of Southern Maine . Jayne made the presentation of
the Award plaque with a memory book of support documents from Susan's
friends. Following the presentation, a congratulatory toast was
made to Susan by all members of the Advising Administration Commission.
Members of the award selection committee were Cindy Iten, Shannon
Williams, Casey Self , Jayne Drake , and Alice Reinarz.
Commission
members were encouraged to attend conference sessions selected as
"commission-sponsored".
Nancy
Walburn, University of Alabama-Birmingham, was recognized by as
a recipient of a 2003 Outstanding Advising Award in the Administrator
category.
Rusty
Fox announced the creation of an award to honor a colleague, Gail
Rola. Plans for nominations and selection are beginning. The award
will recognize an advising administrator who demonstrates unusual
"heart" in the workplace. The award will be "in celebration of her
life, and in recognition of your leadership" for an outstanding
administrator.
Susan
Campbell , Chair of the Administrators Institute Advisory Committee,
made an announcement about the upcoming Institute and Assessment
Seminar in February, 2004. She took feedback from the members about
the AI and its value to administrators. Individuals who had been
at the AI in San Antonio commented about the impact it had provided
for them.
Alice
Reinarz thanked Susan Campbell for preparation and distribution
of an electronic newsletter in 2003 that summarized activities of
the Commission and opportunities for members.
By
a show of hands, members self-identified as "novice" or "seasoned"
advising administrators for continuing conversations during the
conference and specifically during the Commission and Interest Group
Roundtables.

Critical
Issues of Concern or "Hot Topics" Identified:
The
Advising Administrators Commission is working on several continuing
initiatives regarding evaluation of member needs and development
of new programs for administrators. These efforts have been growing
for several years and represent broad participation. The most frequently
mentioned of the "hot topics" include:
- Networking
- Mentoring
- Professional
Development for Advising Administrators
Unit
Goals and Objectives for Next Year:
- Since
there are several professional development opportunities now for
Administrators, there are plans to integrate the curricula for
Regional Pre-conference Workshops, Pre-conference Workshops at
the National Conference, topics during the Summer Institute, and
the Advising Administrators Institute and Administrators Seminar.
- This goal
links to the following NACADA mission- Provide comprehensive
professional development opportunities to the academic
advising community. Identify, develop, and deliver
professional development activities and resources to meet the
needs of the academic advising community - including
institutions, central administrators, full-time advisors, faculty
advisors, and peer advisors.
- We
plan to continue to utilize the time provided during the Commission/Interest
Group Fair and Roundtables (in whatever form they take) for recruiting
new administrators to the Commission. There is considerable support
for the Roundtables although there is some variation of opinions
about the optimal model. We intend to emphasize networking
, particularly connecting veteran with novice administrators.
There is strong support for opportunities during regional and
national conferences for administrators to have time for "casual"
discussion.
- This
goal links to the following NACADA mission- Assess member
needs and talents. Identify representatives of diverse
groups and plan for ensuring their successful involvement in
association activities.
Future
Activities Planned:
- Following
the specific goals for increasing effectiveness for networking,
the practice of providing stickers to designate Administrators
at the Commission/Interest Group Fair received popular support.
It will be continued.
- The
Steering Committee will encourage and select conference presentations
to be designated for Commission Sponsorship.
- The
Steering Committee will solicit nominations and select a Service
to Commission Award winner.
- The
Commission will continue to support actively the variety of Administrator-specific
professional development functions by NACADA.
