5: Summary of Annual Commission Meeting
The
Advising Business Majors Commission meeting was held October
7, 2004 in Cincinnati. Approximately 50 members were in
attendance.
Karen Boston,
Commission Chair, welcomed members and recognized Lauren
Wass and FIU's College of Business Undergraduate Student
Services website for their NACADA award for Electronic Publication
- Certificate of Merit. In addition, Boston recognized and
thanked Lucy Robbins, Lauren Wass, Theres Stiefer, and Joe
Rojo for facilitating the mini chat sessions during the
commission meeting - a different approach to the meeting,
but an opportunity to address the topics and issues developed
at the commission meeting at the national conference in
2003. Topics were voted on by commission membership and
included: Assessment, Advising Technology, Career Planning
and Placement, and Faculty Advising. Boston also thanked
Patricia Kriska and Calley Stevens for facilitating the
HOT TOPIC session, Dealing with Oversubscribed Programs
to be held on October 9, 2004 at the close of the conference.
Boston asked that
members complete the evaluations and include their feedback
from the meeting but also to include goals they would like
to see for the commission, what they would like to see on
the website, what they would like the commission to do,
and what they would like to do at commission meetings. In
general, attendees liked the idea, but the space was not
conducive to the session. Boston hopes that NACADA will
consider the opportunity to pursue this format in the future
and have the necessary setup.
The HOT TOPIC
session was held on October 9, 2004 and approximately 15
people attended the session. Much of the feedback on this
session was related to continuing more discussions. It is
possible that future commission meetings could divide members
by institution type and areas of interests as people enjoy
the networking and sharing of ideas.
