Mission 1 : Address the academic advising needs of higher education.

Strategies:

Identify, prioritize, and address critical issues facing academic advising. Through surveys and needs assessments, identify the issues facing academic advising in higher education and propose methods for addressing these issues - from recognition of advising as a critical component of student success to the recognition of advisors as critical to the educational/developmental process.

Identify and develop strategies for fostering collaboration with various advising constituencies. Seek collaborative relationships with academic and student services related associations, discipline specific organizations, higher education associations, and accrediting agencies to promote the importance of academic advising.

Section 5: Summary of Annual Commission Meeting

The annual Engineering and Science Advising Commission meeting was held at the national conference on Friday morning (11:00AM), Oct. 8, 2004. There were 40+ commission members in attendance.

There were a number of "hot topic" areas identified by the members that they would like to explore further:

  1. Recruitment & Retention Issues (underprepared students, minority and at-risk students)
  2. Academic issues (intervention programs, FY seminars, etc)
  3. Transfer Credit articulation
  4. Promoting engineering & science program to women & minorities
  5. Degree completion rates
  6. Cultural issues (first-generation, minorities, women)
  7. Working with students' "personal issues"
  8. Networking with industry to build connections for student employment opportunities
  9. Promoting study abroad (& making it work w/ engineering & science programs)
  10. Identifying "Good Practices" within advising
