Mission 1
: Address the academic advising needs of higher education.
Strategies:

Identify, prioritize, and address critical issues facing academic
advising. Through surveys and needs assessments, identify the issues
facing academic advising in higher education and propose methods
for addressing these issues - from recognition of advising as a
critical component of student success to the recognition of advisors
as critical to the educational/developmental process.

5: Summary of Annual Commission Meeting
The
annual Engineering and Science Advising Commission meeting
was held at the national conference on Friday morning (11:00AM),
Oct. 8, 2004. There were 40+ commission members in attendance.
There were a number
of "hot topic" areas identified by the members that they would
like to explore further:
- Recruitment & Retention Issues (underprepared students,
minority and at-risk students)
- Academic issues (intervention programs, FY seminars,
etc)
- Transfer Credit articulation
- Promoting engineering & science program to women &
minorities
- Degree completion rates
- Cultural issues (first-generation, minorities, women)
- Working with students' "personal issues"
- Networking with industry to build connections for student
employment opportunities
- Promoting study abroad (& making it work w/ engineering
& science programs)
- Identifying "Good Practices" within advising
