5: Summary of Annual Commission Meeting
At
our annual meeting for the ESL & International Student
Advising Commission held during National NACADA 2004, we
had approximately 10 people in attendance. We discussed
how diverse our group is in interest and needs. Some of
us work primarily with Immigrant Students that are residents
or resident aliens. Others work with International Students
at Graduate Level or Undergraduate Level. Some of us work
with undecided students; while others work with professional
programs. Some of us work with in the registrar's office
while others advise primarily. Given how diverse the work
we do is it was difficult to come up with action plans as
one size does not fit all. We did recognize needs that we
all commonly have and as a Commission we could work on.
We discussed the
following issues that need to be worked on at our institutions
in order to assist ESL/International Students:
- interpreting International Transcripts
- cultural adjustments for students
- language support
- balancing life and school
- financial resources
- legal issues
- sensitivity/awareness training for all staff who
work with English language learners
We identified
many issues we need to work on and want as a Commission:
- Work on identifying solid links and contacts with
NAFSA; AACRAO; TOESL.
- We want to encourage more commission sponsored presentations
at NACADA that are in line with our stated issues.
- We want to make sure we maintain current on web sites
for different links relating to the commission.
