2004-2007 Leadership Reports

SPECIAL NOTICES:

June 2011

Advisors have a unique view on recruitment that allows them to be influential in retaining students. The linked article below furthers a discussion begun by Peterson and Kem (2009), adding information on retention with a special focus on underrepresented populations and second admission programs such as teacher preparation. The recruitment strategies discussed are the basis for effective approaches to retention, highlighting the importance of creating long-term relationships early in a student’s educational career, reaching underrepresented populations and increasing access to advising via technology. Commission chair, Christine Lancaster and commission members, Kelsey Boyer and Chelsea Smith, co-authored: Tying Recruitment to Retention: An Advisor's Role in Working with Underrepresented Populations.

March 2009

The Role of Advisors in Recruiting is the newest addition to Academic Advising Today from Advising Education Majors Commission members Darcie Peterson and Lee Kem. Drawing on a presentation and brainstorming session that was held at the 2008 NACADA Annual Conference, Peterson and Kem embarked on a conversation about what role advisors play in recruiting students—tackling the question, What strategies can be implemented to address issues and barriers in recruiting students in to teacher training programs?

Did you attend the conference in Las Vegas in 2005? If so, you experienced a wonderful, well-organized, informative event! Indianapolis will be even better!! Our membership has increased and the number of proposals from our Commission is expected to also increase offering more opportunities for presentations in Indy.

Following is a list of concerns shared at the Commission meeting in Las Vegas. It seems we have many issues, areas of concerns, and wonderful ideas for presentations.

Additional areas of interest are:

  • FERPA and parent reception/faculty reaction
  • Fingerprinting
  • Advisors with 2 or 3 bordering states
  • “One man band” advisors
  • Advising Sophomores
  • What is a Quality Teacher Education program
  • What constitutes a great Centeral Advising Center ?
  • On line strategies for advisors
  • Portfolio advice
  • Recruitment in local junior and senior high schools
  • Need for a model that transitions students from a “freshman specialist” to a faculty advisor
  • Teacher Dispositions
  • Advising Adult and Nontraditional students
  • Dissemination of information to satellite campuses
  • Smarter working vs. Harder working
  • Minority Advising and Recruitment
  • Challenges of coordination across colleges
  • Retention of Freshmen
  • Education on Saturdays only

We will have a return of the Hot Topics sessions in Indianapolis!! This will be a time for sharing ideas about some of our areas of interest and an opportunity to network for strategies and for possible future presentations. If you would like to see a Hot Topics offered on any of the above subjects, please let me know.

If you are interested in submitting a proposal and would like to present with another Commission member, please e-mail me or one of the Advisory Board members. We will be glad to work with you. New presenters are always welcome!

October 2004

We had a GREAT conference in Cincinnati! Be sure to plan on attending the next NACADA national conference in Las Vegas in October. Our chair, Karleen Edwards, has been very instrumental in organizing this new Commission and moving us forward! At the meeting in Cincinnati , we organized three new committees to assist with the work of the Commission. Lee Kem will be the coordinator for the committees.

Presentation Committee: This group is in charge of publicizing the call for proposals and bringing people together to do presentations. Members of this committee are Christine Lancaster, Linda Hockaday, and Debbie Barber

Research Committee: Responsible for coordinating research related to advising education majors. This committee will also assist with linking people doing similar research. Members: Antoinette Hart, Shawn Quilter, Janelle Rouse

Webpage Information Committee: This committee will look on the web for information on best practices, new ideas on advising, information about education majors, etc. This information will be posted on our website and can be the basis of proposal and research ideas. Members: Janelle Rouse, Ginny Donovan, Charity Snyder

If you would like to be involved in the Advising Education Majors Commission, please let us know. The NACADA conference is a great place to meet others Education Advisors and find your place to be actively involved in this Commission.

October 2003

WE ARE NOW A COMMISSION!!!

At the 2003 NACADA conference in Dallas, the Advising Education Majors interest group sought and received approval to become a COMMISSION! At the first meeting in Dallas after obtaining Commission status, it was decided that the current leadership would serve until elections. Karleen Edwards was nominated for Chair of the Commission. Watch for additional information concerning the Commission.

Several suggestions were received at the Dallas Commission Meeting about information members would like to receive. If you have information on any of these topics, please post that information to the membership via the commission list serve (N-EDMAJORS). Thanks!

  1. It would be nice to have a brief overview of the various models and configurations for education advisors that exist at different institutions.
  2. We are interested in looking for and reviewing/sharing other colleges’ teacher education major handbook as we are in need of developing one. Please respond to Arminda Israel at aisrael@odu.edu and Nola Nicholson at nnichols@odu.edu.
  3. I would like to see the Commission address issues that arise in cross-college secondary education teacher preparation. What are the advising models that exist? Best practices? How do different institutions deal with the tensions that arise around “student ownership (especially in terms of advising) between Colleges of Education and “content area” departments/colleges?

This will get our discussions started! More questions will be posted soon.

We had several presentations from the Commission members. Congratulations! As we prepare for the 2004 conference in Cincinnati, let’s see if we can have some presentations that address the above issues/questions.
