Platform Statement:
I made a career transition to academic advising and counseling
after twenty years in community mental health. I have presented
workshops in state, regional and national conferences. In
addition to having an article and book review published in the
NACADA Journal, I have volunteered on state and national committees.
I am currently the Editor for the Two-Year College Newsletter
for the Two-Year College Commission and the Evaluations Chairperson
for NACADA 2003 in Dallas, Texas. I initiated a newsletter
for new students that won 2000 NACADA Outstanding Advising Publication
Award-Advisee Category. I coordinate faculty advisor training
for all new faculty members, a First Year Success Program (including
workshops and scholarship) and College Cafe'. The latter
is a menu of presentations faculty members may request for their
classes.
I am a proponent of expanding the understanding of academic advising
as a discrete profession, with its own unique characteristics,
responsibilities, nomenclature, and ethical and professional standards.
As Region Chair for South Central Region 7, I will promote the
role of Advisors as teachers in the advancement of students' overall
development. I will strive to expand the understanding of
academic advising as critical in the ultimate success of students.
