Platform Statement:

  • Highlight your involvement in this unit that will help you in leading this unit. What roles have you played in this unit thus far?

I am a new active member of the Engineering and Science Advising Commission.  My role in this commission has been limited, but my combined experience as an advisor, engineer, and educator will provide a new and different perspective to the leadership of this comission that will promote a mechanism of transformation for engineering and science advising.

  • What do you believe are the most important goals and initiatives for this unit in meeting the strategic plan for both the unit and the Association?

Currently, U.S. science and math learning is in decline and technology is increasingly driving global change. The job of delivering this education is harder, but more important, than ever. Therefore, it becomes imperative to serve as a catalyst in yielding well-rounded scientists and engineers with a global outlook and ability to assume effective leadership roles in industry, academe, and society. The Engineering and Science Advising Commission serves to improve advising for math, science, and engineering students.

  • Why are you interested in serving in this leadership position or what influenced you to run for this leadership position?

It would be an honor to serve as a future leader of the Engineering and Science Advising Commission. I want to lead the commission to facilitate discussion and research networks noting "best practices" for recruitment and retention issues especially for under-prepared, underrepresented and at-risk groups, intervention programs, math placement issues, and other academic and student affairs issues.

  • Provide any additional comments or information regarding your past experiences and qualifications that relate to your candidacy for this leadership position.

I am a degreed electrical engineer with 14 years of professional experience who has also served many years as an elementary and secondary educator. I created programs and activities that ignited student interests in mathematics, engineering, science and technology. As the Assistant Director of freshman engineering at Old Dominion University, I engage and energize a new generation of students, with diverse backgrounds, interests, skills, and needs, about the engineering profession and better prepare them, in both technical and non-technical areas.
