Statement:
- Highlight
your involvement in this unit that will help you in leading this
unit. What roles have you played in this unit thus far?
My
membership in the LGBT Commission has given me the confidence
to work with LGBT studentson my campus. I have been the interim
Pride! advisor and helped develop Allies on Campus, which is the
first Allies program at Utah State Unviersity.
As a Allies on Campus steering committee member, I served as the
outreach coordinator, collaborated on developing goals and objectives
for Allies seminars, edited Allies handbook, and promoted at appropriate
university events.
- What
do you believe are the most important goals and initiatives for
this unit in meeting the strategic plan for both the unit and
the Association?
The
role of the LGTBT Commission is to both educate and support the
NACADA membership. I have two goals that would strengthen these
roles:
- Create a NACADA Allies Program. —
I would continue the work of developing a NACADA Allies Program
to raise the awareness of LGBT issues at both the regional and
national levels. An Allies program would not only increase the
recognition of LGBT concerns, but also provide a means to educate
advisors about resources for LGBT students.
- Conduct a commission-sponsored
campus climate survey. — In order to identify the
ways in which NACADA can provide LGBT advisors the professional
support that they do not get at their institutions, I would
work with the NACADA leadership to develop a campus-climate
survey. This survey would focus on faculty and professional
advisors to determine issues of safety, discrimination, harassment,
and isolation. Only by understanding the day-to-day experiences
of the LGBT community, can the Commission provide real and meaningful
professional support to its members.
-
Why are you interested in serving in this leadership position
or what influenced you to run for this leadership position?
It would be an honor to be elected as the LGBT Commission Chair
and I welcome the opportunity to promote the diverse needs and
perspectives of advisors.
- Provide
any additional comments or information regarding your past experiences
and qualifications that relate to your candidacy for this leadership
position.
