Statement:
-
Highlight your previous involvement within this unit that will
help you in leading this unit. What roles have you played within
this particular unit as a member thus far?
Although I have not held a leadership role in the Two-Year Colleges
Commission, I have continued to remain involved in NACADA and
have been employed within a 2-year college for the past 15 years.
Also, because I have been the responsible administrator for advising
in my institution, I believe that I am well prepared to chair
the Two-Year Colleges Commission.
-
What do you believe are the most important goals and initiatives
for this unit in meeting the strategic plan for both the unit
and the Association?
The Two-Year Colleges Commission chair would benefit the NACADA
membership by providing leadership and assistance in focusing
attention on the nature of, populations of and needs of student
advising in the two-year college environment. Additionally, identification
and resolution of advisor professional development issues and/or
needs would be an goal for this unit, along with encouraging greater
professional development offering for two-year colleges at NACADA.
- Why are
you interested in serving in this leadership position or what
influenced you to run for this leadership position?
Upon being nominated, I have expressed interest in serving in
this leadership role. My motivation is to offer my leadership
skills and abilities in service to this great professional organization.
I have received much from NACADA over the past 8 years in the
way of professional growth and now it is my turn to give back
through service to the NACADA.
-
Provide any additional comments or information (either personal
or leadership-related) that you want potential voters to know
about you that is not covered elsewhere in your platform information.
In an effort to share information regarding my experience in the
2-year college environment, I am currently serving my community
college as the Dean of Students at College of DuPage, having previously
served as the Associate Dean of Counseling, Transfer and Advising,
and 5 years as Counseling Faculty. As Dean of Students, I am responsible
for counseling, career services, co-op, special services for students
with disabilities, new student orientation, along with general,
international, multicultural, and developmental education advising.
More
recently, I completed leadership of a 3-year AQIP project to improve
campus advising as a part of the College's accreditation and have
continued implementation of improvements for the past 2-years.
Concerning my educational background, I received a Ph.D. in Education
with a focus on Special Education, Transition Leadership, and
a Master of Science in Rehabilitation Counseling from University
of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Further, I have continued as
an instructor of courses at the community college for students
and faculty regarding advising, career development, college survival
skills and/or disability issues.
