Platform
Statement:
-
Highlight the goals you accomplished and the work you did while
serving as a Unit Chair or Division Representative. In addition,
highlight your involvement in all areas of the Association, demonstrating
your experiences that make you qualified to serve in this position
on the NACADA Board of Directors.
I
have served NACADA in various capacities over the past 12 years
in roles that have provided me the opportunity to experience and
understand NACADA from many levels and perspectives. I started
as an active member, then a committee member, and concurrently
in other roles followed with positions of:
.
Committee Chair
.
Administrative Division Representative and Council Member
.
Board of Directors Member
As
the elected Administrative Division Representative from 2004 to
2006, I initiated a division-wide protocol for the timing of recruitment
of new committee members. As a Division Representative, I served
on the NACADA Council during that time as well. In that role,
I promoted and supported NACADA's shared governance model respecting
the work of all units of the association. As Chair of the NACADA
Research Committee from 2001-2004, I initiated a workshop presentation
on Conducting Advising Research and Writing a NACADA Grant Proposal
at a majority of Regional conferences in addition to National
conference, initiated timing of committee members rotating off
of the committee, developed a description of requirements to serve
and review grant proposals and respond to research questions,
and collaborated with NACADA Journal editors to develop initial
combined presentations at National conference.
I
have served as a member of the Research Committee, the Awards
Committee, and two task forces, and am a current member of the
NACADA Journal Editorial Board, the NACADA Consultants' Bureau,
and NACADA Commissions and Interest Groups. I served on the Advisory
Boards for both the Administrators' Institute and Assessment Seminar/Institute,
as well as serve as faculty for these initiatives. I thus have
experience as a committee member and as a group leader, providing
me an understanding of both roles. These experiences have also
provided me with an understanding of the organization and of the
membership, and combined with my leadership roles within, as well
as outside of NACADA, I believe I am prepared to serve as President
of this great organization.
-
What do you believe are the most important goals and initiatives
for the Association in meeting its strategic plan and what do
you feel you can contribute to this position in meeting these
goals and initiatives?
As NACADA continues to grow in membership, in professional development
opportunities and additional member services, in increased diversity,
and in partnerships with other organizations - most recently in
international opportunities - I believe that it is paramount that
we focus on enhancing our shared governance model and increasing
the diversity of both our membership and our leadership. We must
capitalize on the knowledge and contributions of our many volunteer
leaders in the regions, commissions, interest groups, committees,
and Council. Elected officers must value their opinions and actions
as the Board focuses on the long-term vision for this dynamic
organization. It is through these channels that we can hear the
members and respond accordingly. It is also vital that measurable
outcomes be developed to provide accountability to our members
in order to be able to identify not only the association's needs
and shortcomings, but to celebrate our successes as well. Collaboration,
diversity, and accountability thus are the main foci of my platform
as a candidate for President.
- Why are
you interested in serving in this leadership position or what
influenced you to run for this leadership position?
My roles in NACADA somewhat parallel my professional experiences.
I began as a graduate assistantship advisor in a pre-major advising
center and have since served as:
.
Full time Advisor
.
Faculty member and faculty advisor
.
Coordinator of an advising program
.
Director of two advising programs
My
degree studies, my teaching career, and my professional advising
experience provide an expanded perspective on the needs of academic
advisors and the implementation of effective academic advising
programs. Having served in many roles in NACADA, the amount of
time and effort I have put into this organization pales in comparison
to what this organization has provided me professionally and personally.
I now have the opportunity to give back even more to the organization
as President and to play a pivotal role in the direction and growth
of the organization that has given me so much.
-
Provide any additional comments or information (either personal
or leadership-related) that you want potential voters to know
about you that is not covered elsewhere in your platform information.
I
have advised at private institutions, public institutions, institutions
with open enrollment, and institutions with selective admissions.
I have advised diverse populations of students, and worked with
a diversity of faculty, administration, and staff. These previous
experiences in academic advising and related roles at various
institutions have additionally provided me with diverse viewpoints
regarding the advising of students:

Meadows Community College (1992-1993)

with 30 part-time faculty. Student population included a significant

Department, and various Student Withdrawal surveys, and produced
reports of same. Designed and produced Student Withdrawal Questionnaire
and assisted in design and development of Academic Advising Handbook.
