Platform Statement
:

Highlight your previous involvement within this unit that will help you in leading this unit.  What roles have you played within this particular unit as a member thus far?

I have been a member of the Transfer Commission for the entire time I have been a NACADA member. I have participated actively in discussions at the past 2 national conferences, and enjoy the opportunity to network with fellow advisors with an interest in transfer students. These experiences will assist me in moving this commission forward at a critical time for transfer students. My ability to communicate in a meaningful way with advisors at 2 and 4 year schools is a key component to my ability to perform well in this role.

What do you believe are the most important goals and initiatives for this unit in meeting the strategic plan for both the unit and the Association?

The most important thing that this commission can do is to provide a network for transfer professionals to discuss things that are going on in their respective institutions. With all of the changes affecting the way our transfer students move from school to school (including state and national legislations!) it is imperative that states that have moved through some of these changes already serve as resources for others.

To meet this important need, I would like to create a centralized web-based resource that is accessible to commission members. This can facilitate discussion, as well as serve as a starting place when questions or concerns arise on our individual campuses. This resource will include:

  • Which 2 and 4-year schools have transfer centers, and what this means at the schools (where is it housed, who works there, what services/info is provided, etc.)
  • Information that can be updated by institutions regarding things going on in their states/areas
  • Outreach ideas/efforts from 4 year schools, specifically regarding advising, rather than just recruiting
  • Other components as needed/suggested!

Why are you interested in serving in this leadership position or what influenced you to run for this leadership position?

Though my salary is paid by a 4-year institution, I feel that I have a strong 4-year AND 2-year perspective, as I spend about 10 hours/week advising on 2-year campuses. I value the time and energy that goes into supporting transfer students as they are in the decision making phase of selecting and planning for their receiving institution, as well as the services and resources provided once they make the transition.

I am fortunate enough to be in a state and school that has made many efforts to ease the transfer process by publishing guides that explain applicability of credits towards specific majors, rather than just transferability of hours. These tools can and have served as models of a resource that truly makes our students' lives easier, and I am eager to share my experience with this tool, as well as other state wide initiatives through a leadership role.

I work daily in a front-line capacity serving transfer students, and have also been involved in administrative and programming capacities at my institution. This gives me a unique view of both roles, and allows me to be effective in seeing the big picture of working with transfer students and advising professionals at all levels. I also would like to utilize new and existing technology to increase the ease with which commission members can interact.

I have had the chance to serve in a leadership role on my own campus, specifically regarding conference and presentation coordinating, and truly enjoyed it!

Provide any additional comments or information (either personal or leadership-related) that you want potential voters to know about you that is not covered elsewhere in your platform information.
