Platform Statement:
Highlight your previous involvement within this unit that
will help you in leading this unit. What roles have
you played within this particular unit as a member thus far? |
In keeping with Region Six’s diversity initiative, the 2006 conference
co-chairs conducted a raffle and donated proceeds to the American
Indian College Fund. Also, we successfully solicited Region funding
for two conference scholarships, awarded to advisors who work primarily
with Native American / First Nations students. Member, Region Six
Steering Committee
What do you believe are the most important goals and initiatives
for this unit in meeting the strategic plan for both the unit and
the Association?
The
major goals and initiatives for Region Six focus on acknowledging
and increasing our diversity while strengthening our collaborative
efforts.
- Encourage NACADA membership for new
members of our profession.
- Foster mentoring opportunities between
our newer and more veteran advisors, creating mutually beneficial
relationships.
- In an era of budget shortfalls, when
not everyone is fortunate enough to attend a regional or a national
conference, develop a region listserv to provide an on-going forum
for sharing resources and strategies.
- Encourage conference presentations
and award nominations, again by sharing “what has worked” at our
individual institutions.
- Continue to provide region conference
scholarships for Native American / First Nations advisors.
Why are you interested in serving in this leadership position or
what influenced you to run for this leadership position?
Attendance
at regional conferences / drive-in, and service on the Region steering
committee have confirmed my belief that collaborative efforts are
significant opportunities for professional growth and development.
The power of NACADA as an organization lies in the variety of working
relationships that enhance our professional lives. I hope to approach
the position of region chair with the enthusiasm and commitment
shown by Kim Halbur, the present chair, and her most recent predecessors,
Kim Roufs and Carol Gruber.
Provide any additional comments or information (either
personal or leadership-related)
that you want potential voters to know about you that is not covered
elsewhere in your platform information.
While
attending my 35th college reunion, I had the opportunity to meet
with current students as part of a Career Day event. Toward the
end of the program, a student asked participants how their understanding
of “citizenship” had changed over the years (that gaping chasm between
“your” generation and “ours”). The consensus among presenters was
that citizenship is active engagement with our various communities,
engagement that is fulfilling both personally and professionally.
I look forward to increasing my engagement with the NACADA community
here in Region Six.
