Statement:
Highlight your previous involvement within this unit that
will help you in leading this unit. What roles have
you played within this particular unit as a member thus far? |
I have been a member of the Faculty Advising Commission, off and
on, for many years as the work of the faculty is core to my responsibilities
as Dean, Assistant Provost, and now Associate Provost at two separate
institutions. In the past, I have participated as a member of as
a Steering Committee member, offering support/advice as needed.
My other NACADA involvements precluded deeper engagement. But, I
am now able to offer the benefit of my leadership experience, my
research, my involvement with national higher education associations
and faculty development organizations to the membership.
What do you believe are the most important goals and initiatives
for this unit in meeting the strategic plan for both the unit and
the Association?
Faculty advising and faculty advisors are a continuing challenge
in this organization. NACADA has perennially striven to find ways
to speak to faculty advisors, to engage faculty as members and to
support those responsible for guiding faculty advisor development.
This has not always been as successful as we might have hoped. This
Commission is most significantly made up of individuals responsible
for working with faculty advisors (often holding faculty appointments)
but few faculty members. Yet, I would predict that those individuals
with faculty status are far more likely to be members of this commission
than many others. We are an important force for change.
I
see a critical role in linking the activities of this commission
with national organizations of faculty developers, to learn and
share the best techniques, to engage in the scholarship of teaching
and learning as it applies to advising and, most importantly, to
move the question of developing faculty as advisors into the center
of campus discussions about faculty development. This would involve
promoting collaborations, workshops, research and other initiatives
that will enable this Commission to contribute to the body of knowledge
about faculty advisors and effective faculty advisor development
and programming. This involves educating decision makers who work
with faculty in OTHER teaching/learning professional development
activities, advancing knowledge in the field and contributing to
advising development globally. Our ability to contribute to resources
for advisor development and programming to the national initiatives
will also help to promote the national organization and our national
goals.
Why are you interested in serving in this leadership position or
what influenced you to run for this leadership position?
I
had not thought to seek this position, but was nominated. Upon deliberation,
I felt it was appropriate and timely to consider running for the
Faculty Advising Commission leadership role. I believe that I bring
a great deal of knowledge, experience and passion to this activity.
I have a vision about where we, as members of this Commission, can
move in the upcoming years. I would relish this opportunity!
Provide any additional comments or information (either
personal or leadership-related)
