Statement:
Highlight
your previous involvement within this unit that will help
you in leading this unit. What roles have you played within
this particular unit as a member thus far? |
I
have been very
active in Region 3 since joining NACADA in 2000. I have served as
the North Carolina State Representative and have been active on
the Region 3 steering committee. I have organized and hosted state
conferences and participated in several regional site visits.
Over the past ten years I have worked in South Carolina, Kentucky,
and North Carolina so I am very familiar with the academic advisors,
students, and institutions within the region.
At both UNC Greensboro and Eastern Kentucky University I was able
to energize the campus advisors and generate increased membership
and participation at NACADA state, regional, and national events.
At EKU I was able to secure grant funding to increase advisor training
and development on campus and funded a team of 8 advisors for the
NACADA Summer Institute.
What do you believe are the most important goals and initiatives
for this unit in meeting the strategic plan for both the unit and
the Association ?
Address the academic advising needs of higher education.
It
is critical that the membership of NACADA and Region 3 continue
to grow and that advisors are exposed to the resources and benefits
of our association. I would specifically focus on outreach to
new members and the development of a comprehensive recruitment
plan for potential members at 2 year institutions. State drive-in
conferences need to be expanded and collaboration with other professional
organizations (i.e., NASPA, N4A, FYE) may be necessary and advantageous
to participation in these tight budget times.
Advance the body of knowledge of academic advising.
I
would continue to encourage the membership of Region 3 to participate
in joint research projects and to take full advantage of publishing
opportunities through NACADA. Several Region 3 members have presented
NACADA Webinars and I would continue to encourage our memberships
involvement.
Champion
the educational role of advising.
I
would aggressively work with our membership to obtain recognition
at the state, regional, and national level for outstanding advising
programs and advising excellence. I would also encourage the state
representatives to work closely with individual institutions to
set-up advisor recognition programs on their individual campuses.
Promote the involvement of diverse populations.
I am currently a member of the NACADA Emerging Leader Program
(ELP) and understand the importance of NACADA's commitment to
members from diverse populations. I would work with the state
representatives within Region 3 to identify members (and potential
members) from diverse populations and contact them directly to
provide them information about NACADA and the benefits of membership.
I can provide first-hand accounts of the power and commitment
to diversity of our NACADA leadership group and the ELP program.
Why are you interested in serving in this leadership position or
what influenced you to run for this leadership position?
I have worked with my colleagues from Region 3 for the past 8 years
and would be honored to serve in this leadership position. I have
worked very closely with leaders from all of our states and would
look forward to building on those relationships to ensure future
collaboration and growth.
I had considered serving in this role a couple of years ago, but
I was still in the process of completing my dissertation. That work
is complete and I am confident that I can give 100% to this position
and provide energetic leadership for Region 3.
Provide any additional comments or information (either
personal or leadership-related)
that you want potential voters to know about you that is not covered
elsewhere in your platform information.
I am committed to the success of NACADA and Region 3. I have moved
up the career ladder in academic advising very quickly and this
would not have been possible without NACADA. The educational and
professional opportunities that NACADA has provided me with are
second to none, but more importantly the relationships and people
that I have met through NACADA have changed my life and career path.
I will continue to give back to NACADA in any way I can. I am ready
for the challenge and would be proud to serve to serve as the NACADA
Region 3 chair.
