Statement:
Highlight
your previous involvement within this unit that will help
you in leading this unit. What roles have you played within
this particular unit as a member thus far? |
As
a member of the regional steering committee for the past two years
I have seen how vital our work is to the future of NACADA in the
Great Lakes. I am impressed with the amount of scholarship that
academic advisors in our region are producing. The financial support
and recognition of the regional steering committee is vital to that
progress. I would utilize the collective talent of the regional
steering committee to make decisions concerning grant awards and
presentation selection for the regional conference. Use of teleconferencing
to bring all members of the steering committee together for discussion
and decision-making is a great tool that I would like to continue.
I will also serve as the liaison to the national leadership to keep
them informed of the issues and new ideas developed in our region,
as well as communicate news back to the regional membership.
What do you believe are the most important goals and initiatives
for this unit in meeting the strategic plan for both the unit and
the Association ?
Great
Lakes Region V Steering Committee decided to focus on the national
goal of diversifying our association. As Chair of Region V I would
continue that initiative and look for ways to develop programs of
Inclusive Excellence to attract faculty members, advisors from all
types and sizes of campuses, and future advisors. I think that utilizing
the current awards system to nominate persons of excellence in our
field will help to attract interest on campuses. Our region also
has grant money that can be awarded to help attract new talent and
launch budding careers in the field of academic advising. Members
of NACADA Great Lakes Region V can be the on-campus voice for NACADA
and share our ideas to improve academic advising. This is the time
to develop initiatives to share our knowledge. Administrators are
looking for answers for retention and graduation rates. Indicators
point to improved academic advising as one of the ways to improve
student success.
Why are you interested in serving in this leadership position or
what influenced you to run for this leadership position?
I
am interested in running for this position because I believe in
the work of NACADA and the excellent leadership it provides those
of us who love this field. I also believe in team work and know
that the enthusiasm and dedication of the members is the reason
our region is one of the best in NACADA. It makes sense that the
hard-working membership of the region have selected dedicated and
knowledgeable representatives to serve on the regional steering
committee. It is a wonderful experience to be a part of such a committed
group of people who accomplish so much for the region and for NACADA.
Provide any additional comments or information (either
personal or leadership-related)
that you want potential voters to know about you that is not covered
elsewhere in your platform information.
The
bottom line in advising is the student. All of what we do in NACADA
is to help people become better in helping students. We are in the
helping profession whether we are administrators, professional advisors,
or faculty members. To meet this goal we strive to conduct valuable
research, advise-teach others, and serve our organization. It would
be an honor to serve NACADA and the members of Great Lakes Region
V as the region chair. Thank you.
