Statement:
Highlight
the goals you accomplished and the work you did while serving
as a Unit Chair or Division Representative. In addition, highlight
your involvement in all areas of the Association, demonstrating
your experiences that make you qualified to serve in this
position on the NACADA Board of Directors. |
One of the goals I accomplished as chair of the Advising Adult Learner Commission was to foster better communication among members by sending out a "monthly probe for discussion" via the commission's listserv. Bridging distance between members across the country, and internationally, via monthly online discussions, is a cost-free way to share ideas, pose questions and stay connected. For those members who are unable to attend regional or national conferences, the listserv is a lifeline to information and to colleagues.
Another important area of involvement for me has been serving as a mentor in the Emerging Leaders Program (ELP). I am continually impressed with my mentee's organizational, intellectual and emotional skills, and I am honored to be her "touchstone." Knowing that I am able to contribute to her professional growth in some small way has been immensely satisfying for me. Being an ELP mentor for NACADA captures the spirit of this organization by fostering camaraderie and support for other members, so that we can all go on to be the best advisors we can be!
As a new Commission and Interest Steering Group member, I am looking forward to supporting several commissions as well as bringing ideas and concerns back to the CIG Division.
What do you believe are the most important goals and initiatives
for the Association in meeting its strategic plan and what do you
feel you can contribute to this position in meeting these goals
and initiatives?
While all of the goals and initiatives for the Association are important, I believe that addressing critical issues facing advising, advancing the body of knowledge of academic advising, and promoting diversity within the association are among some of the most critical. Because we are living in difficult economic times and because many colleges and universities will continue to limit travel, attendance at regional and national conferences may become increasingly prohibitive for many members. The Association needs to find creative ways to continue advancing goals and initiatives at a distance, and one of my personal goals is to enhance communication and help advisors to continue sharing ideas and concerns, despite limits imposed on travel to regional and national conferences. The professionalism of academic advisors is dependent, in part, upon a community of shared ideas.
Why are you interested in serving in this leadership position or
what influenced you to run for this leadership position?
Among the reasons why I have chosen to accept this nomination and run for the Board of Trustees position is my desire to contribute my creativity and communication skills to the continued advancement of NACADA's growth and strength as an organization. Over the ten (plus) years that I have been a member of NACADA, I have gained insight, knowledge and camaraderie that are invaluable, both personally and professionally. As a believer in "paying it forward," I hope to serve as an integral element in fostering growth of the NACADA community.
Provide any additional comments or information (either
personal or leadership-related) that you want potential voters to know about you that is not covered
elsewhere in your platform information.
I was honored to receive the nomination for this position, and I am truly excited about the prospect of working closely with other members of NACADA's outstanding leadership to advance our organization's goals and initiatives.
