Platform Statement:

Highlight your previous involvement within this unit that will help you in leading this unit.  What roles have you played within this particular unit as a member thus far?

As a member of the Advising Administration Commission, I have served on the steering committee for three years. During that time, I served on the proposal review and selection committee and most recently as the chair of the Service to Commission Award committee in 2009. I also attended Administrators' Institutes in 2007 and 2008.  In 2008, I led a team of 12 administrators from my campus to the Assessment Institute to begin the process of developing a University-wide advising assessment plan.  The institutes and seminars produced by NACADA have become invaluable in my professional development. I believe the Advising Administration Commission is one of the vital resources of information and support for advising administrators.

What do you believe are the most important goals and initiatives for this unit in meeting the strategic plan for both the unit and the Association?

Currently I am leading a group of administrators on my campus who have been asked to improve advisement of students throughout their academic career. With that in mind, I am drawn to NACADA Strategic Goal 4 which states, "Educate university and college decision makers about the role of quality academic advising in higher education." In October 2009, our committee invited three NACADA auditors to our campus to measure our progress in developing an advising assessment plan. The NACADA audit has given better access for advising administrators with the decision makers on our campus. Useful information and experiences are shared in the commission which aid us in the improvement of advisement.

Why are you interested in serving in this leadership position or what influenced you to run for this leadership position?

I have had the privilege of serving the Advising Administration Commission as a steering committee member since 2007.  It has been a pleasure to meet so many dedicated advising professionals who serve as advocates for the university, the students, and the advisers on their campuses. The commission gives opportunity to those who wish to grow in their profession.  We are dealing with reduced budgets, some with reduced staff, and the need for quality academic advising to enhance student success and retention has not diminished but escalated. The shared expertise of the commission membership is a valuable resource during these difficult times. It would be an honor to serve my colleagues as the chair.

Provide any additional comments or information (either personal or leadership-related) that you want potential voters to know about you that is not covered elsewhere in your platform information.

I enjoy serving as a leader on my campus and believe that I have the skills and expertise to serve as chair of the Advising Administration Commission. I find that leading a team of dedicated and creative professionals is exciting. The Advising Administration Commission has enjoyed excellent leadership for many years and I hope to serve my colleagues as chair.
