"I was one of the truly lucky ones. In Winter, 2005, I attended three different but related NACADA training sessions: the Faculty Advising Seminar, the Administrators' Institute, and the Assessment Institute. All three sessions confirmed that NACADA is made up of the most knowledgeable and professional members, faculty and staff of any organization I have ever belonged to. It was definitely worth my college's and my time, effort and money to attend; our academic advising program will be reaping the benefits for years to come. The Gulf Coast wasn't so bad either."

Make plans to join us for a rewarding experience!

Faculty members have an essential and vital role in the academic advising experiences of students on most campuses. Data in the NACADA 2004 publication, The Status of Academic Advising, indicate that over 80% of 4-year institutions, almost 50% of public 2-year colleges and 80% of private 2 year institutions, utilize models which rely on faculty involvement in academic advising.

Since faculty play such an integral role in academic advising, it is imperative that all constiuencies work together to assure that faculty have the information, tools and resources to effectively engage in the advising process.

This two day seminar will provide participants with the opportunity to gain essential insights on fostering collaboration among those responsible for advising.  In addition, faculty participants will engage in activities to strengthen their advising skills.

There will be plenary sessions during which Seminar leaders will address topics in common to all participants. Following these sessions, participants will work in small groups based on institutional type - two-year college, private colleges, and public universities. In these small groups, participants will work with seminar leaders to develop plans for their campuses that focus on the plenary topic sessions. Within each small group, a further break down will be done based on faculty advisors, administrators, and others who work with faculty. The last afternoon the small groups will work on pulling all strategies together to develop a full plan of action for implementation on their campus for enhancing faculty advising.

The seminar will provide opportunities to:

  • Understand the value of faculty as academic advisors
  • Strengthen advising skills
  • Examine both curricular and pedagogical implications of viewing advising as teaching and learning
  • Explore activities to engage and motivate faculty in advising
  • Consider the various models of exemplary faculty advisor training and development
  • Study the differing needs of faculty advisors with respect to academic discipline and stage in faculty develoment
  • Discover multiple measures employed to assess faculty advisors and advising programs
  • Review examples of intentional and carefully developed plans of assessment

Areas of study will center around:

  • Definition and Philosophy of Advising; Theoretical Foundation; Components of Advising including Teaching/Learning of Advising and Advising Syllabus as well as Roles and Responsibilities of Faculty Advisors
  • Training and Development Issues - including motivational issues
  • Faculty Rewards and Recognition/Evaluation of Faculty Advising and Faculty Advisors

Who Should Attend:

The Faculty Advising: Collaborating for Success Seminar is designed for teaching faculty, departmental/institutional advising coordinators, advising administrators, academic administrators, and student affairs administrators with responsibility for faculty advising.

Participants may choose to come as an individual representative of their campus, or a team approach may be more effective for certain institutions.
