Regional and State Conferences

Regional conferences in Albuquerque, Atlanta, Little Rock, Nashville, Lancaster, Honolulu, and Hartford have been the springboard for valuable opportunities to meet with colleagues, hear new ideas, and share information with those who share enthusiasm about the topic of quality advising.  Over 1700 advisors have already returned to their campuses to generate new ideas and explore possibilities for improving advising programs for their students.

If you weren't able to take advantage of the conference in your region, Regions 5 and 6 would welcome your attendance in Cleveland, April 20-22, or Iowa City, May 18-20. Themes for these two conferences, respectively, are: Advisors Rock - Rolling with the Challenges of Advising and Advising in the 21st Century: Putting the Pieces Together!  These two conferences will frame excellent opportunities for your continued professional development.

Future State Conferences:

Michigan Academic Advising Association (MIACADA) - May 11  Allendale, Michigan

Indiana Academic Advising Network - May 12  Fort Wayne, Indiana

Kentucky/Tennessee Drive In - May 22  Bowling Green, Kentucky

Effectively Engaging Faculty in Academic Advising Seminar

Effectively Engaging Faculty in Academic Advising Seminar
June 22-23, 2006 in Portsmouth, VA

Focused on enhancing all aspects of faculty advising, this seminar will provide participants with invaluable information and strategies for engaging faculty, providing quality professional development to faculty, and evaluating and rewarding faculty advisors.

Participants will have the opportunity to work within teams based on institutional type to network, discuss issues and concerns specific to faculty at their type of institution, and develop strategies they can take back to their own campuses to work directly with faculty advisors.

Registrations are being accepted now!  Come for the Seminar and stay for the Portsmouth Summer Institute! (see below)  Learn more here.

NACADA Academic Advising Summer Institutes

The most comprehensive consideration of academic advising available, the 2006 Summer Institutes will be held in both Portsmouth, VA, June 25-30 and Madison, WI, July 30-August 4, 2006.  The intensive, week-long institutes are centered around seeking and disseminating information in general sessions, workshops, topical sessions and small group discussions, with the goal of developing practical, individualized Action Plans for enhancement of academic advising on your campuses.  Participants in the Portsmouth Institute will want to consider attending the Effectively Engaging Faculty Seminar as well.

The Institutes appeal to a wide spectrum of higher education professionals. Faculty appreciate the focus on how they might best provide advising and how to effectively engage their colleagues; administrators (Presidents, Deans, Assistant/Associate Deans, Department Heads, student services Directors, academic program Directors) often focus on delivery systems, recognition and reward, and training issues; experienced advisors focus on how they might improve advising at their institution; and newer advisors gain understanding of all that is in front of them and how they can use their talents to contribute to student success. The collaborative format of the Institute assures that each individual gets the assistance they desire to assure a memorable and rewarding experience while establishing a nationwide network of colleagues for future contact.

Summer Institutes are a great way to "Build the Next Generation of Academic Advisors" - if you are a new professional, the Summer Institutes can be tremendous opportunities to learn all you need to know about your new career.  If you work with new advising professionals, the Summer Institutes can the perfect professional development for your new professionals!

Applications for Summer Institute Scholarships for the Madison Institute must be submitted by May 1.

K-State / NACADA Graduate Certificate in Academic Advising Program

The Kansas State University / NACADA online Graduate Certificate Program in Academic Advising was recently honored by the Association for Continuing Higher Education with a 2006 Exceptional Program Award for Region 8.  The award was presented February 24th at the ACHE regional conference in Lawrence, KS.  The Program is a collaborative effort between NACADA and the K-State department of Counseling and Educational Psychology.  Students gain knowledge of advising and advising-related areas such as student development theory, counseling skill development, and career development.

NACADA Clearinghouse of Academic Advising Resources

Featured this month in the Clearinghouse: Academic Advising Syllabi.  Campuses that view advising as teaching should provide advising syllabi to their students.  Just in time for summer enrollment planning, find sample academic advising syllabi from a variety of colleges and universities across the country.

NACADA Journal Book Review

Each year many books applicable to advising are published.  No one advisor can read all, yet each book may contain information vital to the advisor's professional development. Journal book reviews are one way advisors can efficiently choose which books to read. As a service, many publishers send the NACADA Executive Office books of interest to advisors. These books are made available to NACADA members, free of charge, in exchange for a review. New selections available for review include:

  • Establishing & Sustaining Learning-Centered Community Colleges

  • Gambling on Campus

  • Teaching Defiance: Stories and strategies for activist educators

Find these books and more here. Members have three months from the receipt of the book to read and write the review. The book becomes the property of the reviewer upon acceptance of the review for publication. NACADA members may review and publish one book review per member year; books requested now are within the 2005-2006 member year.

Authors have been turning in their manuscripts for the June edition of NACADA's quarterly e-Publication, Academic Advising Today, and among those accepted for publication are:

"Modifying your Mindset: A New Approach to Advising Students on Probation" by Jon Steingass & Seth Sykes (Virginia Commonwealth University)

"Integrative Approach to Academic Advising" by Matthew Church (University of Louisville)

"Developing the Next Generation of Academic Advisors: Incorporating Graduate Assistants into an Academic Advising Center" by Katherine Horner (Kent State University), Melissa Mentzer (Ashland University) & Leslie Monaco (Ursuline College)

We are also looking forward to sharing a *Sparkler* from Jim Galvin and Jodi Malmgren of the University of Minnesota - Twin Cities. You won't want to miss hearing about their Academic Planning for Study Abroad form!

We are now discussing article topics for the September edition. If you are interested in sharing your ideas with your colleagues in this format, check out the Guidelines today!

Deadline for Research Grant Proposals is just around the corner!

The NACADA Research Committee announces a Request For Proposals (RFP) for NACADA grants that support advising research. Grants up to five thousand dollars ($5,000) are available to support a single-year proposal. Practicing professionals (administrators and faculty), as well as graduate students seeking support for dissertation research, are eligible.

The Research Committee will accept grant proposals for funding in 2006 through April 15. Click here for information regarding research grants.

Exemplary Practice / "Voice of Experience" submissions for new CD on Academic Advising Delivery Models

Does your campus have an exemplary working situation employing one of the seven most widely used Academic Advising Delivery Models (self-contained, faculty only, satellite, total intake, dual, split, or supplementary)?  Would you be willing to share your experience with others who are considering that Model? Now is the time to come forward and let your Voice of Experience be heard!

Voice of Experience submissions will be considered for inclusion in the second CD in the Foundations of Academic Advising CD series. This CD, which will be available in the fall of 2006, will be entitled "Academic Advising Delivery Models."  It will explain the seven most widely used advising delivery models and discuss why they are an important consideration when assessing, evaluating or re-evaluating any advising system.

Your assistance is needed to identify exemplary programs and resources that can be included in this CD.  To nominate a program, see the application guidelines.  Nominations will be accepted through May 1, 2006. This is a wonderful opportunity to gain recognition for your program and share your experience with your colleagues.

Get Involved with NACADA Commissions and Interest Groups!

NACADA members may designate up to a total of four Commissions and/or Interest Groups with which to have official affiliation. This official affiliation primarily identifies those Commissions and/or Interest Groups for which you would have voting privileges, receive activity updates, and be eligible to hold an elected or appointed position within, such as serving on a committee or serving as a Commission Chair.  Although participation in Commissions and Interest Groups is entirely optional for NACADA members, we encourage you to join those of special interest to you as they are valuable resources for information and networking.

For lists of the current Commissions and Interest Groups available, click on the following links: Commissions, Interest Groups. More information on a particular Commission or Interest Group can be reviewed on its individual webpage.

If you would like to designate or change the preferred Commission and/or Interest Group choices with which you would like to be affiliated, please complete this online form. Upon receipt of this information, your membership record will be updated accordingly. If you previously made your selections, but do not recall which Commissions or Interest Groups were designated, you can simply indicate your current preferences via this form and previous choices will be replaced. Please be sure to provide your name and institution information when completing this form so the appropriate member record can be updated. If you have any questions, please contact NACADA at nacada@ksu.edu.

NOTE: Your four selections can be any combination of Commissions and Interest Groups.   You can change your Commission and Interest Group affiliations at any time - although you should be aware that this may affect your eligibility for certain awards and elected positions.

Campus Advising Awards - Recognize a Colleague on your Campus!

NACADA would like to recognize individuals who receive campus awards in 2006 for outstanding academic advising, faculty advising, or advising administration.  If you would like to notify NACADA of a colleague who recently received a campus advising award, please provide us with this information by completing the short online submission form.  Or, you can e-mail us at nacada@ksu.edu with the following information: exact name of the award; the award recipient's name, position title, department/unit, institution, complete mailing address, city/state/postal code, and e-mail address; and, your name and e-mail address. NOTE: Campus advising award recipients do not need to be current NACADA members.

NACADA applauds these advising professionals on their achievements and appreciates their dedication and service to students. Congratulatory e-mails will be sent from NACADA and lists of the campus advising award recipients are posted to our website by award year.

2006 Retiree Recognition

Retirees will again be recognized by NACADA at the fall National Conference in Indianapolis.  Retiree recognition forms are available on the web.  If you know an advising colleague who retired during the past academic year or has plans to retire during the upcoming academic year, please complete the recognition form and submit it to the NACADA Executive Office by June 5, 2006.

NACADA Division Representatives Elected

Please join us in congratulating the newest members of the NACADA Leadership!  Ruth Hussey and Glenn Kepic were recently elected as Administrative Division Representative and Regional Division Representative, respectively. At the conclusion of the National Conference in Indianapolis, Ruth and Glenn will begin their two-year terms (2006-2008) in these elected positions while also serving as members of the NACADA Council, succeeding Rich Robbins and Kazi Mamun, respectively. Ruth will work with Jayne Drake, appointed Administrative Division Representative, and Glenn will team up with George Steele, appointed Regional Division Representative, to lead their respective divisions.

Complete 2006 election results are available on the Web. An article summarizing the election results and related statistics will be printed in the June 2006 edition of Academic Advising Today - be sure to check it out!
