Plans
are being finalized for the 2004 Summer Institutes in Portsmouth,
VA and Milwaukee, WI. We offer two dates and places to accommodate
your summer schedule. If
you or your team has plans to attend, please fax a copy of your
registration(s) to 785/532-7732 BEFORE you send it to your business
office to process payment. Since enrollment
is limited in both Institutes, this will reserve a space in the
institute of your choice.
You
won't want to miss the opportunity to participate in the most comprehensive
examination of academic advising! Remember,
enrollment for both institutes is limited! An
Institute schedule and list of topics to be addressed is available
at http://www.nacada.ksu.edu/Events/SummerInst/index.htm.
Thanks
go out to the Regional Conference Chairs and their committees and
the Region Chairs for the work they do to bring NACADA near to you
in the 10 regional conferences! Though Regions 10, 2,
4 & 1 have completed their very successful events for the year,
the other conferences are in high gear, finalizing their programs
and receiving registrations!
So,
check out your Region's Conference Web page at http://www.nacada.ksu.edu/Events/Conferences/Regional/upcoming.htm,
fill out your registration form, (and don't forget to check the
"Volunteer" box!), fax it to 785/532-7732 and get set
for a great experience!
The
2004 Annual National Conference will be held Wednesday, October
6 - Saturday, October 9, 2004. Visit the web at http://www.nacada.ksu.edu/NationalConf/2004/index.htm.
Cincinnati is a wonderful venue for the 2004 NACADA National
Conference. The Convention Center provides ample space for the event
with the support of lodging in six nearby hotels all connected by
a skywalk system. The vibrant downtown area provides access to the
waterfront and a variety of shopping and dining opportunities as
well as a short shuttle ride to entertainment developments on the
Kentucky side of the river for even more variety. Cincinnati
has it all: world-class museums, first-class performance arts,
historic sites, a world-renowned zoo and aquarium, and professional
sports all complimented by the best hospitality in the Midwest!
For more information on the sights of Cincinnati, visit http://www.cincyusa.com.
The
Cincinnati conference will offer formal as well as informal opportunities
to visit with over 2,000 advising colleagues. Critical issues
in academic advising will be addressed in a range of interactive
formats.
A
preliminary conference registration form is available now at the
web site at http://www.nacada.ksu.edu/NationalConf/2004/earlyregform.pdf.
If you are fortunate enough to have money left in this fiscal year's
budget, consider registering now. You can add pre-conference
and post-conference workshops this summer, when the final schedule
and registration brochure is available.
Hotel
information is also available on the web site. Reservations
can be made over the Internet (http://www.nacada.ksu.edu/NationalConf/2004/hotel.htm),
with immediate confirmation. If you are interested in sharing
accommodations in order to save money, there is a form at the web
site to facilitate finding a roommate (http://www.nacada.ksu.edu/Forms/Roommate.htm).
AAC&U (Association of American
Colleges & Universities) will host the conference "Educating
Intentional Learners: New Connections for Academic and Student
Affairs Network for Academic Renewal," November 11-13, 2004,
in Philadelphia, PA. NACADA is a co-sponsor
for this conference. The call for proposals deadline is Friday,
April 2, 2004. You may
submit your proposals on-line by visiting http://www.aacu.org/meetings/educating/eil04cfp.cfm.
Educating
Intentional Learners will bring together faculty, administrators,
staff, and students to explore current research and scholarship
on ways to deepen student learning, effective approaches for helping
students become intentional learners, and ways educators can collaborate
to create inclusive environments that support intentional learning.
Participants will review and discuss primary issues related
to connecting the work of academic and student affairs around shared
goals for student learning. If you have questions, please e-mail
meetings@aacu.org or visit
http://www.aacu.org/meetings/educating/index.cfm.
Resources
to assist in revamping components of your first year program may
be accessed at http://www.nacada.ksu.edu/Clearinghouse/Links/firstyear.htm.
As
discussed on the Probation, Dismissal and Reinstatement Interest
Group list http://www.nacada.ksu.edu/list serve/C25.htm,
recent studies have shown that the best predictors of first year
success are student use of time management strategies and class
attendance/engagement (including keeping up in classes). Members
thinking about revamping components of their first year programming
will find sample first year success course syllabi, learning community
web sites, orientation, time management strategies, and much more
in the NACADA Clearinghouse's Resources for Advising First
Year Students http://www.nacada.ksu.edu/Clearinghouse/Links/firstyear.htm.

A
new Interest Group named "Study Abroad Advising Interest Group"
is in the process of being established. Nick Conrad, Study Abroad
Advisor at Edge Hill College of Higher Education, has volunteered
to serve as its first chair. Members interested in being involved
with this new interest group may have an opportunity to meet at
the NACADA National Conference in Cincinnati this fall. Please check
the National Conference program for the time and meeting place for
this initial gathering. This new interest group will also be included
in the Commission and Interest Group Fair being held at the conference.
If you have an interest in becoming involved with this proposed
group, please plan to visit this table at the Commission & Interest
Group Fair.
A
web site has been established for this new interest group at http://www.nacada.ksu.edu/InterestGroups/C38/index.htm
and additional information will be posted to it soon. If you have
questions or would like to become involved with this new group prior

or 334/826-9311.
The
NACADA Advising News is published electronically and sent
to current NACADA members four times a year. Watch your inbox
for the next issue - which will be sent in late May. In the
last year, we have revised the format of the newsletter to include
more extensive articles on current advising issues. Readers
have commented that they increasingly use information in our newsletter
to help educate others on their campus about the positive effects
of quality advising.
There's still
time to take advantage of the 40% discount NACADA is offering on
selected monographs until May 15, 2004. Print, complete, and
fax or mail the order form at http://www.nacada.ksu.edu/forms/clrsaleform.pdf to
take advantage of this special offer!
The
Highlights are a monthly summary of NACADA news and events designed
to inform members via one consolidated e-mail.
