Who should attend?  The Institute is designed for individuals or teams who have responsibility for academic advising, including academic advising campus task force members, advising program directors, advisors, campus administrators, teams or individuals desiring to refine or redesign campus advising services.

The Institute utilizes an effective integration of expert group presentations with small group discussions, workshops and topical sessions led by skilled practitioners and organized by institutional type.  Through these activities, you will develop a network of supportive colleagues throughout the nation and Canada.

A very valuable part of the Academic Advising Summer Institutes is the opportunity to prepare an ACTION PLAN for solving an advising challenge on your campus. The scope of the action plan is left up to you. The scope may be as narrow as devising a new form or as broad as proposing a new model for delivery of advising on your campus or recommending the use of new technology. You will receive assistance with this project by attending relevant sessions, group discussions, and group and individual consultations with institute facilitators who have expertise in the area you have chosen. You may come with an issue in mind or discover one through the information you hear from the experienced faculty.  In addition to the excellent general sessions and a wide variety of workshops and topical sessions, your own ACTION PLAN will be refined and prepared in your daily group discussion sessions.

Here are just a few of the issues addressed in the individual or team ACTION PLANS at the 2004 Summer Institutes:

  • Action plan - Integrating career life planning with academic advising within the College of Human Services
  • Action plan - Write a grant to fund additional support staff to assist the faculty with academic advising
  • Action plan - Develop a peer mentor/advisor program to support retention efforts
  • Reorganization plan - From centralized system to faculty advising and advising center for undecided, conditional, and at-risk students
  • Action plan - Using a first-time pre-advising survey to promote more developmental advising
  • Action plan - An informational Advising Fact Sheet to be sent when a student is accepted
  • Action plan - Implement developmental advising in the School of Nursing
  • Action plan - Using coaching for more effective advising

Featured this month in THE CLEARINGHOUSE...

June and our thoughts turn to weddings, beaches, and incoming student enrollment days!  During these days advisors most often deal with two types of students -- first-time and transfer -- and the Clearinghouse has resources that can help you advise both.

  • First-time students:
  • Transfer students:
    • Course information: When you are working with a transfer student, do you ever wonder what was included in the course taken at another institution? The Clearinghouse links to UT Austin's Web Central http://www.utexas.edu/world/univ/ that provides links to regionally-accredited institutions of higher learning throughout the United States. Here you will find on-line catalogs with course descriptions that can help answer your questions.
NACADA JOURNAL

The spring 2005 issue of the Journal has been mailed to all current members. Member copies for those joining or renewing April 19 - May 31 were mailed on June 1.

Looking for books to add to your professional library? Check out the Journal's Book Review section.  Book Reviews, in their entirety, are now on the Journal's webpage at http://www.nacada.ksu.edu/Journal/Volume-TwentyFive-Issues-1-2.htm#bkrev.   Here you will find reviews from the Spring 2005 issue as well as the full text of book reviews that will be cited in the upcoming Fall 2005 Journal issue.

Making plans for summer? Take along a book from the Journal Book Review list. Some titles new to the list include:

  • Journal of Dual Diagnosis: research and practice in substance abuse comorbidity
  • The Secrets of Facilitation: The S.M.A.R.T. Guide to Getting Results with Groups

Find these books and more at http://www.nacada.ksu.edu/Journal/brbooklist.htm. Members have three months from the receipt of the book to read and write the review. The book becomes the property of the reviewer upon acceptance of the review for publication. NACADA members may review and publish one book review per member year; books requested now are within the 2005-2006 (September 1, 2005 - August 31, 2006) member year.

Does your College Library subscribe to the NACADA JOURNAL?

NACADA members receive the Journal as a membership benefit.   Are there others at your institution who could benefit from the Journal?  Perhaps your college library?   NACADA would like to send a complementary copy of the Spring 2005 issue to your campus acquisitions librarian. Please assist us in this endeavor by submitting your librarian/library name and address information at http://www.nacada.ksu.edu/forms/journalrequest.htm.  This is a great opportunity to introduce the NACADA Journal as a resource for academic advising research, theory, and proven advising practices to your library.
