Making Career Advising Integral to Academic Advising

Joanne Damminger (Rowan University) and Ken Hughey (Kansas State University) contend that career advising can enhance advisors’ work with students and facilitate students’ career and academic development and decision making. Career advising helps students to understand the relationship between their academic programs and career opportunities, to make academic and career decisions, to clarify and set career and academic goals, and to develop plans to achieve their goals.

Ken Hughey (Kansas State University) will serve as a co-presenter for the May 13 Webinar - Making Career Advising Integral to Academic Advising.

Join Joanne and Ken on May 13 as they discuss:

  • Applying career theories to career advising
  • Integrating career and academic advising
  • Advisor competencies needed for effective career advising
  • The advisor’s role in facilitating students’ academic and career planning
  • The career advising process
  • Resources, activities and interventions to enhance career advising

Emerging Leaders Program

Time is running out - don't miss the May 1 application deadline!  Apply TODAY for the 2008-2010 class of NACADA Emerging Leaders and Mentors.

Applications for the 2008-2010 class are available online. The Emerging Leader Program was developed to encourage members from diverse groups to get involved in leadership opportunities within the organization, outfit participants with the skills and tools necessary to pursue elected and appointed leadership positions, increase the number of leaders from diverse groups, and encourage and assist members of underrepresented populations to attend State, Regional, or National Conferences. Emerging Leaders are provided funding to assist them with travel and involvement in the association for the first year of their two-year commitment to the program.

Applications for both the Emerging Leaders and Mentors are due May 1, 2008, with final selection being made by June 2008. For information about the program, including criteria and applications, visit the ELP Website.

Space Still Available for Advising Student-Athletes Institute

A NACADA/National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) partnership has created the Academic Institute: A Game Plan for Student-Athlete Success scheduled for June 15-18, 2008, in Portsmouth, Va. The Institute is open to NCAA Division I institutions, and there is no registration fee to attend the Institute. Institutions selected for participation will be responsible for travel, lodging, and meals that are not included on the Institute schedule.

The Institute will explore best practices known to contribute to successful institutional support for student-athletes and assist participants in developing models and action plans focused on this goal. Incorporating information from practicing administrators, discussions with peers and institutional “team” analysis, participants will examine institutional practices that can be enhanced to build their institution’s capacity for ensuring the academic success of student-athletes. Experienced administrators will serve as faculty and provide guidance and consultation throughout the process and provide a network of support following the Institute.

A key focus of the institute is to encourage cross-campus collaboration, therefore the event will employ a team-based format , which will not only allow campus colleagues to strengthen their own alliances as they work together during small group discussion sessions, but also will give them an opportunity to develop a network outside their respective institutions. It is recommended that each team include 3-4 institutional staff members from a cross-section of campus units (athletics/academics/student affairs), however team participation is not a requirement - individuals are welcome!

Visit the Institute Website to find more detailed information and download an application form. The deadline to return the application to NACADA has been extended to May 12.
