National Conference a Huge Success! |
 |
A
record number
(3,380)
of advising colleagues came to Las
Vegas October 5-8 to share
information on current advising topics. To quote one participant:
"In
all of the sessions I attended, I heard the buzz of collegial
networks being established and reinforced."
After
Conference hours, attendees enjoyed the numerous nearby dining
and entertainment opportunities. Congratulations to co-chairs
Rimi Marwah and Heather Howard
and their entire Conference Committee for
a job well done!
The following "lost and found"
items were turned in to Conference personnel. If you
are missing one these items, please contact Cara Wohler

| "Faculty
Advising Commission" is the new name of
this Commission, which was recently changed from the original
name of "Faculty Advisors Commission". This
change was approved at the Commission and Interest Group Division
and Council meetings recently held in Las Vegas prior to the
National Conference. This name change was initially suggested
at the Commission's annual meeting in Cincinnati in fall 2004,
and after some discussion by those Commission members in attendance,
the general consensus was that this change would be a good idea
as it would open up membership in the Commission to those who
interact with faculty advisors (administrators, academic counselors,
etc.) but are not actually faculty themselves. An electronic
vote involving the Commission's members was held in August 2005
and the proposed name change passed by a wide margin (90.1%
of those Commission members
voting) - Yes = 127 (90.1%), No = 14 (9.9%). |

Foundations
of Academic Advising CD
1: What is Academic Advising?
lays
the groundwork for academic advising. While the primary
target audience for this first CD in the
planned Foundations series is new advisors,
it will be equally useful to advisors who have been working
in the field but who have never had opportunity to become
acquainted with the full scope of foundational advising information
in a single-piece, coherent, sequenced (curriculum) format.
The information presented is "generic" (applicable to any
campus setting) rather than institution-type specific.
This audio-visual CD will
particularly appeal to anyone looking for something beyond
the traditional text-only format. Ten-minute modules
also make excellent tools for group professional development
and discussion-starters.
Click

summary and ordering information.
In
addition to being valuable for advisors, this CD will also
be useful to Administrators who might be trying to help others
on their team to understand the importance of advising."

Peer
Advising: Intentional Connections to Support Student Learning
is designed
to introduce readers to the critical elements of successful
peer advising programs. Peer advising is an important way
institutions can extend advising services to students; in
turn it provides a way to enrich the student experience for
those engaging in this paraprofessional role on their campuses.
Monograph contents range from theory to design and delivery
of a peer advising program. Recruitment, selection and development
of peer advisors are highlighted; program budgets, assessment,
and evaluation suggestions are shared. Exemplary practices
from across the country highlight chapter content.
