A record number (3,380) of advising colleagues came to Las Vegas October 5-8 to share information on current advising topics. To quote one participant: "In all of the sessions I attended, I heard the buzz of collegial networks being established and reinforced."

After Conference hours, attendees enjoyed the numerous nearby dining and entertainment opportunities. Congratulations to co-chairs Rimi Marwah and Heather Howard and their entire Conference Committee for a job well done!

The following "lost and found" items were turned in to Conference personnel.  If you are missing one these items, please contact Cara Wohler at 785-532-5717:  a woman's watch, a pair of glasses, a pair of sunglasses, a lightweight sweater, a sweatshirt

Research Grants

The NACADA Research Committee announces a Request For Proposals (RFP) for NACADA grants that support advising research. Grants up to five thousand dollars ($5,000) are available to support a single-year proposal. Practicing professionals (administrators and faculty), as well as graduate students seeking support for dissertation research, are eligible.

The Research Committee will accept grant proposals for funding in 2006 on two dates: November 1, 2005 and April 15, 2006.  If you missed the first date, begin planning now for the second date.  Click here for information regarding research grants.

NOTE: Due to problems with the K-State email server on November 1, Research grant applications will be accepted through Friday, November 4, 2005.  An email confirmation has been sent for all 2006 applications that have been received.  If you submitted an application and have not received a confirmation, please resend the application to nacada@ksu.edu by November 4.

Research Registry

Are you researching an advising topic for your institution, thesis or dissertation? Want to connect with others researching the same topic?  The NACADA Research Committee sponsors an informal Research Registry to stimulate communication between those researching advising topics. Sign up here for the Registry.  Registrants are matched with others researching similar topics and email addresses provided to both researchers.

Publishing Opportunities
NACADA seeks authors in a variety of publication venues including the NACADA Journal, Academic Advising Today (the association's quarterly e-Publication) and the Clearinghouse of Academic Advising Resources. We encourage members to submit potential articles by following the guidelines for each of these member publications at:
Commission Name Change
"Faculty Advising Commission" is the new name of this Commission, which was recently changed from the original name of "Faculty Advisors Commission". This change was approved at the Commission and Interest Group Division and Council meetings recently held in Las Vegas prior to the National Conference. This name change was initially suggested at the Commission's annual meeting in Cincinnati in fall 2004, and after some discussion by those Commission members in attendance, the general consensus was that this change would be a good idea as it would open up membership in the Commission to those who interact with faculty advisors (administrators, academic counselors, etc.) but are not actually faculty themselves. An electronic vote involving the Commission's members was held in August 2005 and the proposed name change passed by a wide margin (90.1% of those Commission members voting) - Yes = 127 (90.1%), No = 14 (9.9%).
NACADA Sponsored List Serves

NACADA maintains over 50 list serves for global discussions of academic advising issues. Subscribers are encouraged to use these lists for questions and discussion on a variety of advising topics.

NACADA does NOT provide automatic enrollment to its list serves. Find directions to subscribe and unsubscribe on each list's home page; all list serve home pages are linked from here.

List serve Etiquette
Network etiquette (often referred to as "netiquette") are informal rules and procedures established for users of e-mail and list serves to provide them with some simple guidelines to make these electronic communication tools more enjoyable and less annoying or bothersome. Since all Commissions and Interest Groups have their own list serves, the Commission and Interest Group Division (CIGD) put together a summary of guidelines that subscribers are encouraged to follow when posting messages and communicating electronically via these lists. These guidelines can be found here on the CIGD website. A link to these guidelines can also be found on the NACADA list serves webpage.

Foundations of Academic Advising CD Series

Foundations of Academic Advising CD 1: What is Academic Advising? lays the groundwork for academic advising.  While the primary target audience for this first CD in the planned Foundations series is new advisors, it will be equally useful to advisors who have been working in the field but who have never had opportunity to become acquainted with the full scope of foundational advising information in a single-piece, coherent, sequenced (curriculum) format.  The information presented is "generic" (applicable to any campus setting) rather than institution-type specific.  This audio-visual CD will particularly appeal to anyone looking for something beyond the traditional text-only format.  Ten-minute modules also make excellent tools for group professional development and discussion-starters.

Click here for a Module summary and ordering information.

In addition to being valuable for advisors, this CD will also be useful to Administrators who might be trying to help others on their team to understand the importance of advising."

 - Jo Anne Huber, NACADA President

Peer Advising Monograph

Peer Advising: Intentional Connections to Support Student Learning is designed to introduce readers to the critical elements of successful peer advising programs. Peer advising is an important way institutions can extend advising services to students; in turn it provides a way to enrich the student experience for those engaging in this paraprofessional role on their campuses.

Monograph contents range from theory to design and delivery of a peer advising program. Recruitment, selection and development of peer advisors are highlighted; program budgets, assessment, and evaluation suggestions are shared. Exemplary practices from across the country highlight chapter content.
