NACADA is pleased to announce the 2nd Annual Academic Advising Administrators' Institute.  Join us in St. Pete Beach, Florida, February 2-4, 2004.  This institute will focus on the knowledge and skills needed to be successful advising administrators as well as provide an opportunity for in-depth discussions and development of strategies for dealing with issues that advising administrators face daily.  In addition to major presentations, participants will work in small learning groups facilitated by experts in the field to develop action plans for solving an administrative issue or concern.

Registration brochures will be mailed in September or register now at:

Assessment of academic advising is an essential piece of a successful and effective academic advising program for any campus.  This intensive day and a half seminar will focus on the components of a successful assessment program as well as provide specific strategies and tools for developing and implementing assessment programs on your campus.

Participants will have the opportunity to work with presenters with extensive experience in academic advising and assessment, network with other colleagues from across the country, and begin to develop a plan for their campus.

Join us at the Academic Advising Assessment Seminar, February 5 - 6, 2004, at the TradeWinds Island Grand Hotel, St. Pete Beach, Florida.  For more information visit:

The Academic Advising Graduate Certificate Program recently announced by Kansas State University has been quite popular.  The NACADA web site received over 1900 hits to the web page during the first week after announcing the new program and KSU has received over 70 applications already.  The first course, "Fundamentals of Academic Advising", will be offered on-line this fall and students can progress at their own pace.

Approximately 280 advisors, administrators and faculty, representing 154 campuses, have returned to their campuses to begin implementing action plans developed at the two Academic Advising Summer Institutes held in San Diego, CA, and St. Charles, IL.  Participants enjoyed the unique aspects of each location and appreciated the opportunity to schedule their institute experience to accommodate busy summer orientation schedules.  Several institutions sent teams to work on specific needs for their campuses and students.  All took advantage of the general sessions, the variety of topical and workshop sessions, and the individualized attention of the discussion groups.

A special note of appreciation goes to Wes Habley and the faculty, who devote their time and energy to make this a positive experience for all.

Geri Marvel, who represented the City Colleges of Chicago-Harold Washington College, commented:

"I have been telling everyone on campus about the scope and comprehensiveness

of the NACADA Summer Institute.  I am bubbling over with ideas for improvement

of the Advising Office, our student workshops and our handouts.  I have attended

a number of conferences over the years. Other conferences that I attended do not

even come close to what the Summer Institute had to offer."

Cynthia Iten, one of the five Summer Institute scholarship winners, was featured on her campus web page.  Go to http://www.uky.edu/PR/News/03-07_iten_awarded.htm for an idea of how her experience was highlighted on the University of Kentucky site.

The annual Summer Institute reunion is scheduled to take place as a part of the opening reception at the National Conference in Dallas.   Meet under the “Summer Institute Sign” to reconnect with faculty and NACADA colleagues who have shared in this unique experience.

NACADA would like to encourage all members to subscribe to the available e-mail lists for your respective regions, commissions, and interest groups.   These lists provide you an opportunity to communicate with colleagues regarding current issues, concerns, and activities within that particular group and on topics of interest and benefit to you.   Members are NOT automatically added to these list serves upon selection of their preferred commissions and interest groups. Members must subscribe to these list serves individually.   For available e-mail lists and instructions for both subscribing and unsubscribing, please visit our web site at:

http://www.nacada.ksu.edu/list serve/index.htm

To more efficiently and cost effectively reach members of a particular constituency within NACADA with important information, the Executive Office uses electronic communication whenever possible.  Generic e-mail lists are currently utilized to send bulk electronic messages to specific regions, commissions, or interest groups.  These e-mail lists are used for announcements and distribution of information only; members are not able to reply to these messages.  When you receive such a message, we want to assure you that you have only been added to that list temporarily to send the message.  These e-mail lists enhance our communication with NACADA members and help keep you up-to-date on activities and deadlines in a more efficient manner.  If you prefer not to receive these bulk messages, you may contact our office and ask to be removed from these electronic mailings.  However, please note that this would also exclude you from receiving announcements and information, including deadlines, about NACADA activities, conferences, resources, and possibly some member benefits.

Information is now available on the 2004 NACADA Leadership elections at the web site below, including a list of positions to be elected, eligibility criteria for these positions, and an online nomination recommendation form.  Election information and printed nomination forms will also be available in the NACADA Booth in the Exhibits area at the national conference in Dallas and in the back of the conference program.   Nomination forms can be submitted either online, at the conference, or by fax or mail.  All nominations will be due to the Executive Office by WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 15, 2003.

Congratulations to Terry Musser from Penn State University on being awarded a NACADA Research Grant for her project "A Case Study Examining An Academic Advising System at a Large Institution Using Systems Theory Constructs."  Terry and all NACADA Award Recipients will be formally honored at the 2003 Awards Ceremony at the NACADA National Conference in Dallas this fall.

NACADA would like to recognize individuals who have received campus awards in 2003 for outstanding academic advising or advising administration.   If your campus has given such an award this year, please e-mail the following information to Julia Wolf at the NACADA Executive Office at jqwolf@ksu.edu:  exact name of the award plus the award recipient's name, position title, department/unit, institution, and e-mail address.  Please note that these advising award recipients do not need to be current NACADA members.

Thanks to those of you who have already sent notification to NACADA of your campus awards given out this year.  The recipients of these campus advising awards have been listed on the NACADA web site at the link below.  There is a link on our home page to this site as well as on the Awards web site on the "Cumulative Recipient Lists" page.

A new list serve has been established for members of the Canada Interest Group and/or colleagues interested in advising issues facing Canadian academic advisors or advising administrators.  This list serve provides an excellent opportunity for these advising professionals to network with their colleagues across the country and to share concerns that have a uniquely Canadian focus.  The Canada Interest Group itself was created to ensure that Canadian issues and concerns are addressed within the NACADA organization, and having this special e-mail list will help facilitate this goal.  To subscribe to this list serve, please visit the web site below for subscription instructions.

In July the NACADA Membership voted to endorse the Board's recommendation of establishing a new membership category for individuals employed outside accredited, non-profit, higher education institutions.  These members are important to NACADA, so an Associate Membership category was established to accommodate their role in the organization.   Associate membership is an individual membership category with the same dues as General members. ($50).  The only difference is that Associate members are not eligible for elected positions within the association.

Authors wanted:   Beginning with Journal issue 23(1), Spring Journal issues will feature articles dealing with aspects within one Facet of advising.  Articles are now being solicited from the general membership and individual commissions for the following issues:

  • Advising Administration (Spring 2004 Journal issue)
  • Advising on Different Education Levels (Spring 2005 Journal issue)
  • Advising In the Disciplines (Spring 2006 Journal issue)

Advising Administration Issue Information and Deadlines:   Topics applicable to this upcoming Journal issue should address various issues in administration including, but not limited to:   assessment, preventing advisor burnout, legal issues, use of technology, working with faculty advisors, training and development, and student retention.

Titles and abstracts for the Administration issue will be due October 1, 2003, with the finished articles due December 1, 2003.  The Advising Administration issue will be published in 2004.  Check the NACADA Journal Web site for other Facet issue deadlines and manuscript guidelines.

Journal Issue 22(1) is at the bindery!   Look for your copy in the coming weeks.

Links to college catalogs across the U.S.

Dealing with a transfer student's transcript and need to know about a course?   Look up the course description on the Web U.S. Higher Education.  Compiled by the University of Texas at Austin, Web U.S. provides links to regionally-accredited institutions of higher education in the United States.  Find community college and university Web sites listed alphabetically by state.  Then follow the links to each college's catalog.  Never guess about a course again!

NACADA is pleased to announce that two new monographs will be available this Fall:

  • Advising & Learning: Academic Advising from the Perspective of Small Colleges & Universities
  • Advisor Training:  Exemplary Practices in the Development of Advisor Skills

Look for these new monographs at the NACADA Booth at the National Conference in Dallas.
