HIGHLIGHTS AT-A-GLANCE

 

ADVISING IN THE SPOTLIGHT

New to the Highlights!  Do you know of a recent article, in a non-advising publication, that features academic advising?  We will spotlight articles that were recently published in national, regional or statewide non-advising publications in the NACADA Highlights.  

This month's features:

  • Mary Stuart Hunter and Eric R. White. (March/April 2004). "Could Fixing Academic Advising Fix Higher Education?" in About Campus, Volume 9, No. 1, pp. 20-25. Jossey-Bass.
  • Kendra Hamilton. (April 8, 2004). "Creating a Successful Student-Athlete: Discipline, focus and hard work are just a few attributes, says advising expert Dr. Ruth Darling" in Black Issues in Higher Education, Volume 21, No. 4, pp. 30-31.
  • Marilyn Gilroy. (May 17, 2004). "Learning Communities = Higher GPAs + Improved Retention." in The Hispanic Outlook in Higher Education, Volume 14, No. 16, pp. 25-27.

Article submissions may be made at http://www.nacada.ksu.edu/Forms/advisingspotlight.htm.  Submissions must meet the following criteria:

  • Articles that discuss advising or advising issues should be from non-advising publications (periodicals such as journals, newspapers, or on-line newsletters)
  • Articles must be published in a copyrighted state, regional (multi-state), or national print-based or web publication
  • Articles must be published within the last 8 weeks
  • Articles must be readily accessible to individuals (college library must be able to obtain the article through appropriate channels, e.g., interlibrary loan)

Submit the article as a reference citation (APA style) giving the article title, name(s) of the author(s), publication name, volume and issue (if applicable), and where article can be found (Web link to the article or the publication).

NACADA will not include submissions for commercial promotion.

ACADEMIC ADVISING SUMMER INSTITUTE

2004 NACADA AWARDS RECIPIENTS ANNOUNCED

Congratulations to the 2004 award recipients in the NACADA National Awards Program. All award recipients will be formally honored during the NACADA National Conference in Cincinnati this fall. This year's award recipients include the Pacesetter Award and Service to NACADA Award winners, 18 Outstanding Advising Award winners, 31 Outstanding Advising Certificates of Merit, 4 Outstanding New Advisor Award winners, 8 Outstanding New Advisor Certificates of Merit, 4 Outstanding Program Award winners, 6 Outstanding Program Certificates of Merit, 3 Electronic Publication Award winners, 5 Electronic Publication Certificates of Merit, 2 NACADA Scholarships, 4 Summer Institute Scholarships, 1 Student Research Award, and 3 Service to Commission Awards. The Research Grant awards will be announced in July.

NATIONAL CONFERENCE

The National Conference on Academic Advising will be held Wednesday, October 6-Saturday, October 9, 2004, at the Cincinnati Convention Center.

Visit the conference web site for details on the areas below, plus other information. The printed Registration Brochure will be mailed in early July.

Conference and Hotel Registration

  • If you are lucky enough to have some money left in this fiscal year's budget, it's not too early to register for the conference. 

Session Titles/Topical Tracks

  • Over 300 session titles plus their presenters and institutions are listed according to advising tracks or topics.   You can easily view the sessions offered in your areas of interest.

Keynote Speakers

  • Dr. Nancy L. Zimpher, the first woman president of the University of Cincinnati, will speak at the opening plenary Wednesday evening.   Her research in education will set the tone for an excellent conference.
  • John Wagner, humorist and professional speaker, will speak Friday morning on Humor Helps Us Build the Bridges -how our sense of humor can help us find more joy in our important work of helping students succeed in higher education and life.

FINAL REMINDER FOR SUBMITTING 2004 RESEARCH GRANT PROPOSALS

Looking for outside funding sources for research on academic advising? Final research grant applications are due by June 7, 2004, to NACADA.  For submission guidelines, visit our web site at http://www.nacada.ksu.edu/Awards/Grants.htm. Please share this funding source with academic researchers on your campus!

RETIREE RECOGNITION

Retiree recognition forms are available at http://www.nacada.ksu.edu/Awards/Retiree.htm. If you know of a colleague who retired during the past academic year or has plans to retire during the upcoming academic year, and you wish to recognize him/her at the fall national conference, please complete the form at the above web site and submit it to the NACADA Executive Office by June 7, 2004. Although recognitions received after June 7 may not be in time to be printed in the awards booklet distributed at the conference, these retirees will still receive an Emeritus pin from NACADA.

KSU/NACADA GRADUATE CERTIFICATE IN ACADEMIC ADVISING

The next course offered in the KSU/NACADA Graduate Certificate in Academic Advising Program is The College Student and the College Environment which will begin on June 7, 2004, and end July 30, 2004.  The last day to register for the course is June 21, 2004.  Apply now and register by visiting http://www.nacada.ksu.edu/GraduateCertificate/index.htm.  Courses for the fall semester are:  Trends in Career Development and Foundations in Academic Advising.

RESEARCH REGISTRY

Are you researching an advising topic for your institution, thesis or dissertation?  Want to connect with others researching the same topic?  The NACADA Research Committee sponsors an informal research registry to stimulate communication among those researching advising topics. Use the Registry form to be matched with others researching similar topics.   Email addresses will be provided to all collaborating researchers. 

FEATURED THIS MONTH IN THE CLEARINGHOUSE

"The Importance of Values and Culture in Ethical Decision Making" can be found at http://www.nacada.ksu.edu/Clearinghouse/AdvisingIssues/ValuesEthics.htm. While most advising decisions are routine, we can unexpectedly face an ethical dilemma when an unusual situation occurs suddenly and an immediate response is needed. Christine Chmielewski, Indiana University South Bend advisor and Kansas State University graduate certificate student, addresses what every advisor needs to know before an ethical crisis occurs.

Note:   Members have three months from the receipt of a book to read and write the review.  The book becomes the property of the reviewer upon acceptance of the review for publication.  NACADA members may review and publish one book review per academic year; books requested now are within the 2003-2004 academic year.

NACADA would like to recognize individuals who received campus awards in 2004 for outstanding academic advising or advising administration. If your institution has given such an award this year, please e-mail the following information to Julia Wolf at the NACADA Executive Office at jqwolf@ksu.eduexact name of the award plus the award recipient's name, position title, department/unit, institution, complete mailing address and e-mail address. Please note that these advising award recipients do not need to be current NACADA members.

NEW CHAIR APPOINTED FOR ADVISING HEALTH PROFESSIONS INTEREST GROUP

NACADA is pleased to announce that Ruby Mason has agreed to serve as the new Chair for the Health Professions Advising Interest Group. Ruby is replacing Nancy Walburn who is stepping down from this leadership role in preparation for serving her 3-year term on the NACADA Board of Directors beginning this fall. NACADA truly appreciates all the work that Nancy has done over the past few years in representing this interest group.

2005 ELECTION INFORMATION

Information is now available on the 2005 NACADA Leadership elections at http://www.nacada.ksu.edu/Election/index.htm, including a list of positions to be elected, eligibility criteria, and an online nomination recommendation form. Election information and printed nomination forms will also be available in the NACADA booth in the Exhibits area at the National Conference in Cincinnati and in the back of the conference program. Nomination forms can be submitted either online, at the conference, or by fax or mail. All nominations will be due to the Executive Office by FRIDAY, OCTOBER 15, 2004.

2005 ADMINISTRATORS' INSTITUTE AND 2005 ASSESSMENT OF ACADEMIC ADVISING INSTITUTE SCHEDULED

Join us on the beach!  We are excited to announce our return to the TradeWinds Island Grand Hotel in St. Pete Beach next winter for these two exciting working institutes.  After working and expanding your knowledge with us during the day, relax and walk along some of the whitest beaches in the U.S.  The 2004 successful seminar on the Assessment of Academic Advising has been expanded into an Institute upon feedback from the participants.
