the tone for an excellent conference. John

1979:
Margaret Thatcher was elected as the first female British
Prime Minister. ESPN became the first all sports TV network
with Dick Vitale declaring that it was "awesome baby!" Gloria
Gaynor's "I Will Survive" topped the charts, and the National
Academic Advising Association (NACADA) was born with 429 charter
members.
You are invited as we celebrate NACADA:
Lighting Student Pathways for 25 Years at
the national conference in Cincinnati. Boogie to music from
four decades at the Welcome Reception Wednesday evening.
Look in your conference bag for a memory book that highlights
association milestones. These milestones, along with pictures
from the NACADA Archives, will be featured on the large screens
prior to the plenary sessions. Want more time to view these
pictures? Browse through these and other Archive memorabilia
in the 25th Anniversary exhibit booth that highlights how your
association 'survived' and supported members 'Lighting Student
Pathways' across four decades: 70s, 80s, 90s, and now the 2000s.
The Advising Definition Task Force and the NACADA Core Values
for Advising Task Force have both developed drafts of their
recommendations that we know need member input. Please
go to http://www.nacada.ksu.edu/discussions.htm
for the link to read the drafts and then post your comments
on the NACADA Discussion Board. Your
input Is important!
AAC&U (Association of American Colleges
& Universities) will host the conference "Educating Intentional
Learners: New Connections for Academic and Student Affairs Network
for Academic Renewal," November 11-13, 2004, in Philadelphia,
PA. NACADA is a co-sponsor
for this conference.
Educating Intentional Learners will bring together faculty, administrators,
staff, and students to explore current research and scholarship
on ways to deepen student learning, effective approaches for helping
students become intentional learners, and ways educators can collaborate
to create inclusive environments that support intentional learning.
Participants will review and discuss primary issues related to
connecting the work of academic and student affairs around shared
goals for student learning. If you have questions, please
e-mail meetings@aacu.org
or visit http://www.aacu.org/meetings/educating/index.cfm.

Nearly 100 students are enrolled this semester in the two courses
being offered on-line as part of the KSU Graduate Certificate
in Academic Advising. The two courses being offered this fall
semester are "Trends in Career
Development" and "Foundations
of Academic Advising."
It's not too late for YOU!! You can still apply
and register for "Trends
in Career Development" through September 2 and for
"Foundations of Academic
Advising"
through September 22. For enrollment information,
visit http://www.nacada.ksu.edu/GraduateCertificate/index.htm.
Two new monographs will be available
in October. "Giving
Advice to Students: A Roadmap for College Professionals"
is designed to help campus professionals, especially faculty
and student affairs professionals, blend their expertise to
help students understand the underlying assumptions that direct
their education and to integrate their college experiences.
"Advising Transfer
Students: Issues and Strategies"
identifies many of the issues related to transfer students and
provides a wide range of potential services, programs, and other
resources to strengthen the overall higher education experience
for transfers.
Your next NACADA Journal
provides articles that highlight 21st Century Advising: Facets
of Advising Administration.
From "The Effect of Standards
Use on Academic Advisor Job Satisfaction" to "What
do Students Really Want in their Advising?" this record
breaking issue contains over 170 pages of articles that will
help you be a better advisor. With an anticipated press date
in early October, watch for this issue in your mailbox in late
October or early November.
The
Clearinghouse continues to welcome those new to the
field with Lisa Haydon's "If
I were to write a book about advising for new advisors... ".
Whether a new advisor or a harried veteran, Haydon's
inspirational message is an excellent reminder why advising
can be an enjoyable and deeply meaningful occupation.
Take 5 minutes to read and renew!
As we celebrate NACADA's 25th anniversary,
we continue to revisit classic articles from the archives of
the Academic Advising News. "Intrusive Advising
for Freshmen" http://www.nacada.ksu.edu/Clearinghouse/AdvisingIssues/Intrusive-Freshmen.htm
was first published in September 1987. This article, by
charter member Earl Walter, details an intrusive advising model
that has stood the test of time.
We (the NACADA Summer Institute faculty
and 253 now close friends!) gathered in Portsmouth, VA, and
Milwaukee, WI, for two week-long Institutes designed to help
administrators, faculty and advisors formulate and implement
projects to enhance or improve advising on their campuses. Several
institutions sent teams, others sent individuals and all came
away with new perspectives and great ideas! You may want to
view some of their ACTION
PLANS on the web.
Along with the intensive set of programs
and activities, we had a little fun and took a few pictures
along the way (http://www.nacada.ksu.edu/Events/SummerInst/2004/index.htm)!
It has been determined that NACADA will again offer two Institutes
next summer to provide alternative times and locations for your
participation. So start planning now - the locations and dates
should be available by National Conference time!
Regional Conferences are lining up
for March and April of next year - be sure to mark the dates
and plan to submit a session proposal. We should be able to
accept presentation proposals by the middle of October! Volunteers
are always needed, so if you can help - contact the chairs and
let them know of your interest! This is a great way to get involved
with your association.
