Hello
pre-law advisors!
As
you know, NACADA is seeking proposals for its 2005 National Conference,
to be held October 5-8 in Las Vegas, Nevada, and now is the time
to start brainstorming.
This
year, we would like to really encourage interest group members to
submit proposals on pre-law advising. To prime the pump, what follows
are some ideas to get you started; any of these could be an individual
session, but you might also consider collaborating with others to
create "panel" presentations on certain topics. Panels
of 3 or 4 presenters and a moderator are great because then each
panelist is only responsible for 10-15 minutes of content -- and
what advisor can't talk for 10-15 minutes about a program or idea
they are proud of?
Some
ideas you may want to consider:
- Pre-law advising models -- what works
at your school?
- Collaborating with other on-campus
resources
- Is pre-law advising curricular or co-curricular?
- Basics of the application process (for
new pre-law advisors and general advisors who answer 'occasional'
pre-law questions)
- Financial planning/financial aid for
pre-law and law school
- Pre-law advising & pre-law programs
for under-represented students (CLEO, etc)
- Personal statement tips
- Advising pre-law freshmen: teaching
them what it takes
- "Wanna be" or lawyer-to-be?:
making law school admissions a "sure bet for students in
the "middle numbers" (LSAT & GPA)
- Pre-law advising for students in "non-traditional"
pre-law majors (fine arts, engineering, nursing, others)
- pre-law advising for alumni -- assisting
students who have been out of school a while.
- pre-law programs -- what works at your
school? (i.e. career days, personal statement workshops, LSAT
workshops, law student panels) -- this one would be extra good
as a panel presentation, in my opinion.
Please
feel free to use the Pre-Law Interest Group list serve to set up
your panels and brainstorm ideas. If you are not already subscribed
to it, we encourage you to visit our interest group web site at
www.nacada.ksu.edu/list serve/C34.htm
for instructions to do so. Instructions for posting messages to
the list serve are also provided.
The
deadline to submit conference proposals is February
8, 2005. At the following
web site, you will find proposal
submission information and a tutorial for writing an
effective title, proposal and abstract.
