Large Universities Interest Group News and Updates
Note:
The following message was e-mailed to interest group members on
February 19, 2007.
To: Large Universities Interest Group Members
From: Myla Rugge, Chair
Dear NACADA Colleagues:
Thank you for your interest in the NACADA Large Universities
Interest Group (LUIG) -- already 247 members
strong! Some of you attended the initial meeting of this group held
during the annual conference in Indianapolis last fall. We are excited
to let you know that we have now been granted official interest
group status.
Web pages have been created specifically for this interest group.
To access its home page, visit www.nacada.ksu.edu/InterestGroups/C42/index.htm.
The purpose, goals, and leadership contact information have been posted
on these interest group web pages. Updates and resources will be added
in the coming months. As a member of this interest group, you will
be sure to receive periodic updates and announcements.
As you may know, a list serve was created for this interest group
last year. For instructions to subscribe, visit our web site at www.nacada.ksu.edu/InterestGroups/C42/listserve.htm. You
are encouraged to subscribe as soon as possible if you have not already
done so. In the coming months, I will be sending messages to
this list requesting information about programs and best practices
at your Large University. My hope is to develop an LUIG clearinghouse
of information and resources for our website, as well as have an ongoing
discussion of current events and issues at Large Universities.
At the annual NACADA conference in Indianapolis last fall, we brainstormed
goals for this interest group for 2007-2009. Here's what is in the
works toward these goals so far:
- Networking - Planning
a social/networking gathering at the annual NACADA conference
in Baltimore.
- Roundtables
- A proposal for a Hot Topic at the Baltimore conference has been
submitted. The title is "Large Universities and NACADA's Concept
of Academic Advising" and the abstract submitted for this
session is as follows —
What
does NACADA's Concept of Academic Advising mean at Large Universities?
What are the challenges of institutionalizing "Advising is
Teaching and Learning" on a large scale? In what ways
are advisers at Large Universities working to implement this
Concept? If possible, please bring a copy of your University's
mission statement and your advising syllabus (if you have
one) to what promises to be a stimulating discussion!
- Best Practices ("dealing
with the numbers") - As a NACADA Interest Group we have a website,
which is a work in progress.
Thank you again for your interest in this new interest group. Please
send any suggestions or feedback to the list
serve or to me directly at mylar@u.washington.edu.
I look forward to learning from you all! Thanks!
