Ethics and Legal Issues In Advising Interest Group
Advisors
are finding that their work is becoming more complex due to the
increased diversity in the student population. The introduction
of the internet as well as new privacy laws such as FERPA have created
situations which have raised ethical or legal problems for advisors.
In
the past two years, ethical and legal issues have been discussed
via presentations or publications. However, our members need a place
to discuss their questions. In addition, as our student population
becomes more diverse, advisors need a place where to obtain information
where legal issues and ethical issues collide.
Our
discussions can help advisors understand:
- The
limits of their expertise and when to make referrals
- Avoid
dual relationships
- Provide
a framework to promote ethical conduct in advisors
- Understand
the potential legal liability areas related to their work
- Understand
the importance of basic knowledge about immigration laws
- Provide
a forum where advisors could discuss ethical or legal questions
safely
Goals:
- Foster
discussion and sharing of information related to ethical and legal
situations that advisors face in their work.
- Promote
sharing resources and expertise via the internet.
- Raise
awareness of the role of law and ethics in advising.
- Foster
additional presentations of legal and ethical issues at national
and regional conferences.
