Edge Hill University is pleased to host the 2009 International Conference on Personal Tutoring and Academic Advising in association with the National Academic Advising Association (NACADA) and the The Higher Education Academy.

Description:

The aim of this conference is to explore the ways in which personal tutoring, academic advising and other forms of institutional support contribute to improving student success in higher education. Although success may be defined in a range of ways, there is an important role for personal tutoring and academic advising in relation to all interpretations of student success. In the current climate however there are strategic, financial and practical challenges to the implementation of an effective support system, and institutions are responding in a vary of ways to assist students to succeed (Thomas and Hixenbaugh 2006).

Furthermore, it can be difficult to assess the impact of different retention interventions. The potential contribution of personal tutoring (and academic advising) and many of the challenges were recognized in the National Audit Office review of retention in UK higher education:

“Research has indicated that effective personal tutoring may be an important factor in retaining more students. Most if not all institutions provide students with additional academic support through personal tutoring systems… Institutions are, however, facing challenges with their personal tutor systems…There can be difficulties in defining the precise role of a personal tutor and the acceptable amount of contact time or availability to students. There is sometimes a need for a more structured approach, which is less dependent upon the work schedule or goodwill of individual members of staff, and provides training to tutors so that they know how and when to refer to student services. Several institutions we visited were undertaking a review of their systems...The sector has access to a wide range of advice on good practice in retention, although we found that there is relatively little evaluation of the impact and transferability of practice."(National Audit Office Report 2007)

Campbell and Nutt (2008) also acknowledge the contribution of academic advising to student learning and persistence:

"When viewed as an educational process and done well, academic advising plays a critical role in connecting students with learning opportunities to foster and support their engagement, success, and the attainment of key learning outcomes. Viewing academic advising as an educational process moves it from the paradigm of teaching that focuses on information or inputs to a paradigm of learning that focuses on outcomes for student learning. In this way, academic advising supports key institutional conditions that have been identified with promoting student success." (Peer Review, Vol 10, No. 1 , Winter 2008)
