Position Description
This position reports to the Assistant Director of Undergraduate Advising and is accountable for providing academic advising services for undergraduate students.

Duties
* Academic Advising: facilitate understanding and purpose of higher education for advisees; assist students with academic goal setting; teach students how to monitor their progress; help students develop decision making skills; make student referrals to campus resources as necessary; advise on course selection and long-term academic planning; work with students who have academic difficulties and helping them to access appropriate resources on campus; maintain close working relationships with faculty and with colleagues in Career Education, Counseling Services, the Academic Center for Excellence and the Intercultural Center to discuss issues related to the academic success of students.
* Advising Administration: facilitate planning for new first-year scheduling by working closely with the Registrar; coordinate advising plans for new student orientation; manage and coordinate registration workshops; oversee the review of advanced and AP credit for new students; review and process all grade replacement petitions.
* Student Initiatives: Provide leadership for student engagement initiatives, including but not limited to focus groups, peer programs and cross campus collaborations.
* Registration and Records: assist in scheduling, preparing and presenting programs for registration and orientation for all incoming students as well as pre-registration for all continuing students; maintaining appropriate student records within the University's database; assist in the review of final grades, and analyzing the academic parameters achieved to determine honors, probation, or dismissal status; and certifying graduates.
* Transfer Credits: assist in the approval of applications for transfer credit, including evaluating transcripts of transfer students for acceptability of courses and credits from other institutions.
* Study Abroad Advising: advise students who are interested in the opportunity to study abroad; assist students with course planning and curriculum integration for a semester or more abroad; and advise on transferability of credits for courses taken within a selected program.

Required Qualifications
This position is best filled by an individual with a Master's degree in a related field, and demonstrated knowledge of academic advising and student development theory. At least 3-5 years of advising experience is required. Ability to utilize computerized registration and degree audit applications is required; SCT Banner experience is desirable. Advising experience with one of more of the following student populations preferred: international students, honors program students, learning disabled students or students in academic difficulty. Excellent interpersonal and communications skills are required to effectively advise students, and interact with faculty and staff. Position Description
Life Skills & Transfer Counselor
ADVANTAGE Program

Counselor position to work closely with selected group of students who are first generation, low income, or disabled students and assist them in retention, graduation, and transfer activities.

Duties
1.Provide extensive and intrusive counseling services to ADVANTAGE students including personal, academic, transfer, and career counseling.
2.Assist ADVANTAGE students in the completion of financial aid applications and in the research of scholarship opportunities via the Internet and other sources.
3.Coordinate and conduct workshops to address academic and life skills important to participants.
4.Coordinate all transfer activities for the grant including college search, application completion, and visitations to baccalaureate institutions. The establishment of strong professional relationships with admissions and financial aid personnel at four-year colleges will be necessary.

10.Write short articles concerning transfer issues in the monthly ADVANTAGE newsletter.

12.Assist Director in compiling data for annual performance reports.
13.Advise entering students in course selection and completion of intake validation process for receiving grant services from ADVANTAGE. Maintain liaison with the Advising/Counseling and Assessment Centers.
14.Serve as academic advisor to ADVANTAGE students, assisting with course selection, preregistration, transfer and other issues related to academic success.

Required Qualifications
1.Master's degree in Education, Psychology, Counseling, Social Work, or related field with experience in an academic setting.
2.Prior work experience with TRIO programs, students with disabilities, diverse, at-risk, or underprepared students required.
3.Minimum three years experience, preferably in a community college setting, working with at-risk students and students with disabilities, providing personal, academic, transfer, and career counseling.
4.Extensive knowledge and experience with Windows, ACCESS, Excel, Word and PowerPoint software.

Position Description

Senior Assistant Dean

Position Description
BASIC FUNCTION: As one of several managers in the Center for Student Advising (CSA), the Senior Assistant Dean assists the Dean of Advising in the overall strategic planning, leadership and oversight for the Center for Student Advising, which serves the undergraduate student bodies of Columbia College (CC) and The Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Science (SEAS). Specifically, the incumbent will focus on leading units that are focused on educational programming and community-building for specific populations of students, namely first-generation students, first-generation students from under-resourced backgrounds, and named scholars. These programs include but are not limited to HEOP, NOP, McNair, John Jay Scholars, Kluge Fellows and Affiliates, CP Davis Scholars, Egleston Scholars, Summer Bridge Program, Summer Enhancement Fellowships, and Graduate Student Mentors. These are designed to offer students enhanced academic and cultural opportunities and are focused on academic, personal and professional development through faculty and peer mentoring, research, on- and off-campus activities, all of which encourage the development of student potential. The Senior Assistant Dean will be responsible for the overall strategy, planning, leadership and continued transformation of these advising programs, which focus on the development and enhancement of small communities within a larger academic community. This includes budgetary oversight and the supervision of personnel who run these programs. The incumbent will have a cohort of advisees from among the undergraduate students in CC and SEAS. The incumbent is expected to serve as a sounding board and resource for personnel within the CSA and represent the CSA internally and externally. The CSA works to enhance the educational experience of approximately 6,000 CC and SEAS students by fostering a dynamic and enriching University community. The CSA is a unit within the larger community of advisers of the Division of Student Affairs for CC and SEAS, which assists students in their development as individuals, community members, and leaders.

Duties
A. Strategic Planning. The Senior Assistant Dean leads the HEOP, NOP, McNair, John Jay Scholars, Kluge Fellows and Affiliates, CP Davis Scholars, Egleston Scholars, Summer Bridge Program, Summer Enhancement Fellowships programs, among others, and develops programs for other first-generation students and scholars. This position also has a role in assisting the Center for Student Advising through organizational change and potentially implementing new structures over time as needed. The Senior Assistant Dean mentors and assists individuals and programs within the CSA to create and further goals and objectives that are aligned with the Center's strategic plans. This position is also expected to helps units develop budgetary and other strategies to meet the goals and objectives.

B. Leadership duties include working with the Dean of Advising and other senior leadership team members to lead, transform and re-imagine the programs and implement change in daily operations, administration of programs, policies and practices, assessment, and training and professional development. The Senior Assistant Dean supervises people who direct programs developed for students in HEOP, NOP, McNair, John Jay Scholars, Kluge Fellows and Affiliates, CP Davis Scholars, Egleston Scholars, Summer Bridge Program, Summer Enhancement Fellowships, and Graduate Student Mentors, which serve CC and SEAS. In addition, the Senior Assistant Dean may participate in a variety of committees and working groups that develop, support, and enhance the advising programs and structures within the schools. As the leader of these programs within the Center for Student Advising, the Senior Assistant Dean will be responsible for discovering ways that these units can leverage one another's expertise, develop new areas of expertise within those units and serve as a resource to other advisers regarding these units, their programs, and policies. The incumbent will also sit on the senior leadership team within the Center for Student Advising.

C. Student advising duties include counseling students about academic policies, programs, and options, assisting students in the development of meaningful educational plans, and supporting students by helping them to identify the impact of their decisions on their academic, personal, and professional goals. The Senior Assistant Dean supports students as they develop greater responsibility for their educational goals, evaluate post-graduate options, and transition to life after college. Duties to facilitate this include maintaining a comprehensive knowledge about all academic policies and procedures, core requirements, pre-professional information, and all non-major specific information. The Senior Assistant Dean will work collaboratively across units within the Division of Student Affairs and other units across campus to provide the necessary scholastic, co-curricular and personal resources to help students achieve their goals which includes working with faculty, academic departments, the Center for Career Education, other campus resources.

D. Programming duties include supporting the specific programming efforts for these student populations, the Center as a whole, and large-scale Student Affairs programs such as the Summer Advising sessions, New Student Orientation Program, Family Weekend, Days on Campus, Class Day, among others. The Senior Assistant Dean will also ensure coordination and cohesion of staff in the delivery of programs and services. In addition, the incumbent will facilitate a close working relationship with other departments within the Division of Student Affairs, academic departments in Arts & Sciences, and the SEAS Office of Academic Affairs in an effort to deliver the best possible services to students.

E. Oversight of academic progress duties include participation in the Committee on Academic Standing, assessment and evaluating the policies and procedures in place that guide that committee, maintaining current records on advisees (including but not limited to: academic plans, leaves of absence, readmission, summer study, academic disciplinary reports, student petitions, requests for incompletes, graduation clearance). The Senior Assistant Dean communicates with faculty and other advising resources as appropriate.

F. Crisis Management duties include partnering with relevant offices within Student Affairs to address crisis situations with advisees. This will include involvement in the Student Affairs divisional emergency on-call team.

G. Budgetary duties include overseeing the operational and programming budgets for the programs that support these student populations, which includes NY State and federal funding.

H. Perform other related duties as assigned.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND/OR EXERCISED: The Senior Assistant Dean reports directly to the Dean of Advising/ Associate Dean of Student Affairs. S/he manages a team of managers, advising deans, advisers, graduate students, and support staff.

RESPONSIBILITIES FOR BUDGET/ASSETS: The Assistant Dean will have oversight over the operational and programming budget for the units within the Center for Student Advising that support HEOP, NOP, McNair, John Jay Scholars, Kluge Fellows and Affiliates, CP Davis Scholars, Egleston Scholars, Summer Bridge Program, Summer Enhancement Fellowships, and Graduate Student Mentors, among others.

Experience with college students is required in one or more of the following areas: academic advising; curriculum planning and college teaching; supporting and advising first-generation students; program planning designed to support specific undergraduate student populations; career counseling; academic support programs; State and federal grant applications and reporting requirements; residential life or general student affairs administration within a diverse campus in an urban setting. Excellent written, oral communication and interpersonal skills are essential. Demonstrated leadership and management experience in a complicated organization is also essential. Some evening and weekend work is required. Advanced degree desirable. Supervisory experience preferred.

Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor's degree (Master's preferred) along with a minimum of three years of related experience preferably in an academic environment, excellent organizational and interpersonal skills with ability to work independently, along with demonstrated problem solving skills and ability to prioritize work assignments in a demanding environment. The Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT), an internationally renowned college of art and design, business and technology of the State University of New York, invites applications and nominations for the position of Assistant Dean for Academic Advisement.

FIT is establishing an Academic Advisement Center to provide centralized "one-stop" academic advisement for over 8,000 undergraduate degree students in the schools of Art and Design, Business and Technology and Liberal Arts. The Center will be a student-focused office where student questions and concerns about curriculum, academic planning, academic standing and other concerns that affect academic performance can be addressed; or where the student will be referred to the appropriate faculty member or office, as appropriate.

The Assistant Dean for Student Advisement reports directly to the Vice President for Enrollment Management and Student Success. The division of Enrollment Management and Student Success includes the offices of Institutional Research, Admissions, Financial Aid, Registrar, International Students, Student Life, Counseling, Health Services, Residence Life, Disability Services, Athletics and recreation, and the Educational Opportunity Program. The Assistant Dean will work closely with deans, faculty and student service offices to establish the Center for an anticipated opening in academic year 2012-2013.

Duties
Develop an Academic Advisement Center on the FIT campus. Work collaboratively with various constituent groups to design the organizational structure of the Center. Work closely with space and facilities planners to develop the physical space for the Center. Develop a plan to recruit, hire and train staff. Develop policies and procedures, training materials and programs for staff.

Supervise the operations of the Academic Advisement Center. This includes, but is not limited to oversight of advisement activities, developing ongoing training programs for staff, evaluating the performance of staff members, and overseeing the budget.

Work in partnership with deans, faculty, student development and enrollment management departments and other student service areas to provide appropriate advisement services for the undergraduate degree-seeking population of the college.

Develop programs to improve services for at risk students and special populations. Monitor student success, retention and persistence and develop targeted strategies to assist students.

Develop and utilize various assessment tools to ensure that programs and initiatives are appropriately evaluated.

Oversee the development and implementation of new and emerging technologies (virtual advisement, chat rooms, etc) to disseminate information and services to students.

Develop a close working relationship with the registrar's office so that changes in curriculum and requirements are communicated to students and advisement staff in a timely and clear manner.

Develop an advisement process for students taking courses on-line or abroad.

Required Qualifications
A Masters degree and a minimum of 5 years of experience in academic advising, counseling or other student support services.

Must have strong organizational skills with the ability to establish priorities, manage multiple demands and projects, and meet deadlines. A strong customer service orientation and attention to detail are essential, along with excellent oral, written and interpersonal communication skills. Must possess the ability to take initiative, use sound judgment to make decisions, resolve problems diplomatically and discretely, and work cooperatively with faculty, students, and staff members. Excellent communication skills and experience with new and emerging technologies required.

Position Description
The successful candidate will report to the Assistant Dean of the Center for Academic Advisement and will be responsible for evaluation of transfer credits and the smooth transition of transfer students by conducting advisement sessions, participating in orientation and providing students with the tools to navigate the processes required to be an independent and knowledgeable college student.

Duties
* Evaluate transfer transcript coursework, Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate documents for MSV course equivalences to determine academic status.
* Communicate with students regarding transfer issues and program advisement
* Develop library of materials for course evaluation.
* Research and resolve transfer credit evaluation issues.
* Partner with Admissions Office to ensure a successful transition of transfer students by arranging placement tests, providing advisement/registration services and participating in transfer orientation activities
* Provide academic advisement to a diverse student population.
* Assist students with developing academic goals specific course plans for registration
* Advise students about college policies and degree requirements
* Facilitate section of a Freshmen Year Experience course and act as academic advisor for students enrolled in section

* Partner with Assistant Dean and Bridge Coordinator to plan and participate in various academic related programs ie. Freshman Orientation and Freshman Year Experience course

Required Qualifications

* Accuracy and attention to detail and ability to work with detailed information from a variety of sources.
* Ability to track completed evaluations using excel log and have the ability to further develop processes to insure the input of accurate credit information into the Banner data system.
* Exceptional computer skills - Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook-email,
* Experience with Banner Student Administration software.
* Strong organizational, written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills
* Ability to maintain confidentiality of work related information and materials.

Preferred Qualifications
* Master's degree in Academic Advisement in a higher education setting. .
