Duties and Responsibilities:

The W. P. Carey School of Business seeks an Academic Success Specialist, for the Undergraduate Program. This individual will be a key contributor to increasing student retention and graduation by supporting current students in making timely progress toward a degree through a range of in-person and online academic counseling and support strategies. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

 

- Providing 1:1 as well as group academic advising, recruitment and retention, and academic success support functions to students to ensure ongoing successful progress to completion of degree program.

- Utilizing online tools such as Degree Audit Reporting System and eAdvisor to monitor and assist students with timely academic progress, exploration of various academic options, and course selection and registration.

- Participating in recruitment/admissions, retention, career development, and student engagement activities, including teaching a student success course.

- Working with students dealing with complex academic situations, making appropriate and timely referrals for non-academic issues and/or concerns to applicable services including, but not limited to: Student Health, Counseling & Consultation and Career Services.

- Collaborating with academic units and student services departments throughout the university to facilitate comprehensive student support.

- Advising a variety of students, including current, prospective (high school and transfer), and transition (incoming or outgoing).

- Preparing reports and advising materials.

- Developing and presenting workshops for students, parents, high school/community college advisors about W. P. Carey programs, policy, and procedures.

 

DAYS AND SCHEDULE:

The Undergraduate Programs Office is open Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Wednesdays from 8:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., some evening and weekends are required

 

Required Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in Counseling or closely related field AND two (2) years previous experience in one or more of the following: advising, student recruitment/retention, related student services, teaching in an institution of higher education; OR, any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.

 

Preferred Qualifications

Desired Qualifications:

Master's degree preferred. Experience working in an academic environment. Experience with: college-level advising; collaborating with students and faculty and staff; Microsoft Office applications (i.e. Word, Excel, Outlook); Student Information Systems; effective verbal and written communication skills; good organization skills; attention to detail; problem solving; teamwork. Advisor I, Academic & Career (Assessment) #08018

Position Description

Major Function: Provide immediate advising and interpretation of assessment results for reading, writing and math placement. Prepare educational plans with students based on their placement scores with an explanation of developmental education courses as required. Assist students to understand academic preparation and skills needed to be successful learners in college level courses. Provide general academic and career advisement to SLCC students, utilizing academic and career assessments, career library materials and other resources to assist students in developing educational and career plans. Assist students in all SLCC degree, diploma, certificate and completion programs. Make appropriate referrals to advisors within specific major areas.

Duties

Essential Responsibilities and Duties:

a. Provide interpretation of College Placement Test (CPT) and other assessments with a focus on advising students whose scores fall below college level in reading, writing and math. Assist students to develop individualized educational plans outlining the sequence of developmental courses necessary for their skill level. Assist with course selection and scheduling.

b. Coordinate closely with the Assessment Center staff to identify and follow up on students who need assessment advising and with Developmental Education faculty to assist with scheduling needs of students.

c. Conduct follow up on students in developmental education classes and conduct research on students' progress in developmental education.

d. Advise and assist students in understanding the requirements for all SLCC degree, diploma, certificate and completion programs; advise students in developing academic timelines, exploring course work, sequencing and selecting courses and developing class schedules; advise students in understanding transfer programs to four-year institutions and planning efficient transfer.

e. Advise and assist students in becoming aware of their values, interests, abilities, and clarifying their academic and career goals. Assist students to utilize career assessments, career library and other resources to explore careers and develop plans.

f. Assist with identification and retention efforts for undecided students at SLCC.

g. Assist students to develop an academic plan and follow strategies for success to improve their standing when on Academic Warning, Conditional Enrollment or Academic Suspension.

h. Make referrals to campus and community resources.

a. Bachelor's degree required. Emphasis in educational psychology, education, communication or other related field preferred.

b. Two years full-time, paid related work experience required. Higher education experience strongly preferred.

Assist faculty and advisors by providing updated information about career exploration and occupational trends; work with Advisors to provide inservice training. Produce handouts on career information pertinent to SLCC areas of study.

Become familiar with career information presented through professional organizations such as NACADA, National Resource Center, and local media.
