Director of the First Year Experience

Position Description
Western Carolina University seeks to create an integrated approach to the college experiences of our first year students. The director of the First Year Experience will oversee the implementation of a plan to connect all aspects of student life including academic, co-curricular, social, and developmental experiences.

Duties
The director will establish a means for entering first year students to be seamlessly integrated into the university beginning with the recruitment and admission processes and continuing through orientation, advising, and enrollment in the first year through transition to the sophomore year. Program development, implementation, and evaluation executed by the director
will incorporate the national literature and best practices in early undergraduate experiences.

The successful candidate will demonstrate an understanding of the holistic nature of the undergraduate student experience with specific interest in creating awareness and fostering student involvement in international studies, service learning and civic engagement, research, internships and cooperative education. The director of the First Year Experience will work closely with faculty and administrators in the colleges, as well as with staff in residential living, orientation, academic success centers,
registrar's office, career services, instructional technology, the Honors College, admission, advising, student affairs, athletics and public relations to strengthen new students' ties to the institution and promote academic success and persistence at the university. The director of the First Year Experience is a 12-month full-time EPA (exempt from the personnel act) position with teaching responsibilities of one course per semester in a discipline appropriate to the successful candidate's discipline, or teaching in one of the first year transition courses.

The director of the First Year Experience will report to the assistant vice chancellor for undergraduate studies and will oversee the administration of the First Year Seminar in Liberal Studies, and select college transition courses.

Duties

Duties

This position will also have responsibility for coordinating advising for freshmen seeking to enter science majors. Position Description

The Director of Academic Advising is responsible for directing the programs and services provided by the Academic Advising and Planning Center. S/he develops, plans, and evaluates the academic advising program for first year, entering transfer, and undecided students. The Director reports to the Associate Vice President for the Academic Experience. The Director recommends policy and procedural changes to administrators, develops, evaluates and implements procedures to ensure activities of the program are consistent with the College’s academic requirements and standards, FERPA, legal requirements and professional standards, and works closely with on-campus offices such as the Registrar, Admissions, etc., to provide unified and effective student services. The Director leads or participates in special campus-wide initiatives and projects associated with matters that impact advising, retention or other timely topics. The Director coordinates orientation advising and course registration programs with the Director of Orientation, New Student Programs, Deans, Chairs and other academic offices, and creates/conducts advising-related recruitment and orientation programs for prospective students, families or groups. The Director assesses diverse needs of students who use advising services and adjusts the structure of the program to address those needs. The Director coordinates with the Office of Accountability, Accreditation, Planning and Assessment to manage an effective outcomes assessment program. S/he researches, develops and applies technology to support advising programs/services, and investigates advising trends, implementing best practices discovered via conferences, seminars and research. S/he develops and administers the departmental budget and manages program resources. The Director ensures fiscal compliance with State, College and Federal guidelines, and accurate and timely maintenance of program usage statistics, analyzing data and preparing reports/presentations. S/he hires, supervises, supports, reviews and evaluates a large professional advising staff of 14 and several administrative positions. S/he encourages and supports training and developmental needs for all staff and provides training when appropriate. The Director represents the Academic Advising and Planning Center on various College committees and at local, regional and national conferences. Opportunity to teach is available.

Required Qualifications

Master’s degree from an accredited institution and demonstrated leadership experience in a college-level advising program. Must have knowledge of advising practices and principles, and curriculum requirements generally and be able to adhere to the College of Charleston’s specific curriculum requirements. Skills in management and public relations, as well as strong verbal and written communication skills are required. Knowledge of student development theory and educational administration is essential. Must have the ability to create and maintain effective relationships with students, parents, faculty, staff and the general public.

Preferred Qualifications

Supervisory experience and/or experience working in public higher education is preferred. Experience with Banner, Access, Degree Works, and advising support technology such as Advisor Trac is preferred. 2. Serve as Designated School Official (DSO) to maintain records in Student & Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) Provide regulatory guidance, technical assistance and counseling to students regarding changes of status, practical training, employment, reinstatement, transfers, taxes, social security.

3. Communication - Disseminate information to students, faculty and staff regarding immigration issues, population updates, meetings, activities, etc. Serve as the International Student Advocate within the school community.

4. NAFSA/Community Networking - Attend local, regional and national NAFSA meetings, host events, and develop networks to provide advice and assistance. Attend local community meetings and networking events for ethnic Community groups, develop community organizations network.

5. Maintain direct contact with student advisees.

  • Meeting with individual as well as small groups of students on an ongoing basis.

  • Maintain quarterly office hours.

  • Awareness of FERPA and parental confidentiality issues.

  • Development of advising action plans: implement and monitor.

  • Maintain Student Profile information including parent information, health issues, financial, academic progress, personal problems, language barriers and employment issues.

6. Advise students concerning scheduling, attendance, and academic progress and curriculum issues.

  • Maintain access to attendance files with notification and documentation in a timely fashion.

  • Monitor grade information on assigned advisees.

  • Keep file on curriculum issues (advanced standings, special schedules, etc.).

7. Inform and help students access all available services.

  • Apprise students of housing options.

  • Advise students to stay current with financial obligations.

  • Direct students to Counseling when deemed necessary.

  • For part-time employment, direct students to Employment Assistance.

8. Discuss student progress with instructors.

  • Monitor grades and question weak performance areas.

  • Act as bridge between student and instructor.

9. Work with the Education Department to ease student transition during the registration process.

  • Create and process special and regular schedules.

  • Report to appropriate registration staff.

10. Student persistence and completion.

11. Participate in the Continuing Student Review initiative.

12. Participate in Orientation events.

13. Other Responsibilities as assigned.

Required Qualifications

Position Requirements:

1. Bachelors Degree required, Masters Degree preferred.

2. Three to five years experience in an education environment.

3. Excellent oral and written communication skills.

4. Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to act effectively as a member of a team.

4. Excellent organizational, supervision, and communication skills including the ability to use computer technologies and software

5. Documented skills in administering academic/university policy and knowledge/understanding of university and college curricula

6. Demonstrated ability to collect, analyze, and assess data related to student success, student learning outcomes, and program effectiveness and to work collaboratively with IR and other owners of data to achieve assessment/research goals

7. Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of current issues and trends in both academic and student affairs 8. Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the diverse populations on a university campus and the ability to successfully address the various needs and issues presented by a diverse student population

9. Experience with first-year programs/seminars and academic support/learning assistance programs

10. Ability to successfully administer multiple projects/programs and complete or implement them in a timely manner

Preferred Qualifications

1. Earned doctorate

2. Experience using SPSS

3. Experience implementing student success initiatives such as Supplemental Instruction and Academic Coaching
