Advising and Counseling

Position Description

The Director of Advising and Counseling reports to the Dean of Student Success & Retention and is responsible for managing, coordinating, and supervising a comprehensive advising system at Clark College. This position provides overall leadership and management in the design and delivery of college-wide advising services and will lead efforts to assess, implement, and evaluate changes needed to ensure high quality advising services for students. Administrative responsibilities include: program development and implementation, program evaluation and review, personnel management, budget and inventory oversight, development of policies and procedures, and monitoring for compliance. This position works with internal and external partners to integrate advising efforts across the college, and consults with areas responsible for admission, registration, testing, academic standards, outreach/recruitment, curriculum/instruction, and business services.

Duties

• Oversight of college-wide academic advising system and serve as a resource for academic advising issues.

• Coordinate the assessment of advising services; ensure the implementation of enhancements relative to assessment findings; make budgetary and programmatic recommendations based on assessment outcomes.

• Implement an advisor development plan that orients faculty and staff advisors to the connections between academic advising, student goal attainment, and retention.

• Supervise full-time and part-time counselors, educational advisors/coordinators, curriculum advisors, general program advisors, and other advising staff to include Associate Director of Running Start and Student Workforce Development Manager.

• Ensure appropriate budget planning and management of resources.

• Oversee and assist with direct services to new, current and potential students.

• Implement plan for advising services to include identification of annual goals and objectives as well as submission of annual reports and program evaluations.

• Serve as the point of contact for receiving and resolving student issues related to advising.

• Represent Student Services on campus standing/ad hoc committees, including the Curriculum Committee, Academic Standards Committee, and other committees dealing with instructional and student services issues.

• Represent Clark College at statewide groups, including the Inter College Relations Commission and the Advising and Counseling Council.

• Participate in the Student Affairs Leadership Team.

• Engage in training and workshops and presentations at the campus, state, regional, and national levels.

• Provide feedback to the Office of Instruction regarding quarterly class offerings and annual calendar.

• Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

• Master’s degree in Counseling, Education, College Student Personnel, or related field.

• Three years of progressively responsible experience developing and providing leadership for student services programs.

• Demonstrated experience with budget management

• Experience supervising professional staff.

• Experience with transfer, co-admission, and articulation agreements.

• Demonstrated experience with technology in student services (e.g., database programs, electronic academic plans, on-line advising, student records management systems, etc.)

• Demonstrated commitment to access and diversity.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with community college populations.

• Ability to deal constructively with multiple demands.

• Strong planning and organization skills.

• Demonstrated ability to complete assignments.

• Strong oral and written communication skills.

• Teaching experience preferably in higher education.

• Ability to work effectively with faculty, staff, and students.

Under the direction of the Executive Director of Enrollment Services, the Admission Counselor & Enrollment Advisor for Professional Studies will be responsible for providing information regarding the University to Professional Studies (evening-adult) students and prospective students; oversee advising process for current students, review applications, follow up with students, select qualified applicants, and make recommendations regarding Professional Studies Program admissions to the Executive Director as appropriate.

Duties

• Read and evaluate applications; assure applicant credentials meet qualifications for admission; select qualified applicants and make recommendations regarding admissions to the Executive Director.

• Meet with prospective students individually; respond to questions or concerns of students; follow up with students as needed.

• Assist with orientation, including preparing paperwork and forms for students and conducting orientations.

• Review weekly attendance and counsel students not attending class.

• Operate a computer, copier, fax and other office equipment as assigned.

• Prepare and maintain records and reports related to assigned activities.

• Participate in the development of publicity materials including letters, brochures and fliers.

ABOUT THIS POSITION: The UI Career & Professional Planning office is seeking an energetic and highly organized individual to join our team of career service professionals. Reporting to the Director of the Career and Professional Planning (CAPP) office, the Manager for Career Advising and Professional Development is responsible for all programs and services related to career advising and professional development, including the advising of students and alumni on career decision-making, job/internship searches, and other career development topics; coordinating and presenting class presentations and workshops related to career choice and professional development; creating and teaching for-credit career development courses; collaborating with faculty and student service departments to increase career presentations to targeted student populations; coordinating the alumni mentor program; coordinating and administering career assessments in cooperation with the Counseling Center; developing an assessment process to collect and analyze data for the purpose of program improvement; and overseeing the Teacher Placement File service. The Manager will participate on the CAPP management team and will supervise the career advising staff consisting of 1 staff member, 1-2 AmeriCorps Members, and 2-4 student interns.

Required Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Personal Characteristics:

· Bachelor’s degree in Business Management, Human Resources, Counseling, Business Education, Adult Education, Psychology, or related field.

· 2-5 years experience in career services, student leadership development, human resource development, recruitment, counseling/advising, training, or other applicable field

· Excellent written communication skills

· Experience teaching adult learners and making formal and informal presentations

· Experience advising students in individual and/or group settings

· Experience with curriculum development and training

· Strong organization and project management skills
