POSITION SUMMARY

Nevada State College is seeking experienced, highly motivated, energetic, and organized individuals to serve as Academic Advisors. The Advisors' role is to facilitate students' ability to function at a high level of proficiency within their classes. Advisors assist students in reaching their academic goals by advising, monitoring academic progress, and providing information about majors. Advisors monitor reasonable academic progress to graduation for incoming new students (Freshmen and Transfers) and current students with less than 60 transferrable and/or earned hours. NSC's Centralized Academic Advising Center has a wholistic and progressive philosophy of proactively guiding students to academic success. As members of the Center, Advisors develop partnerships and serve as liaisons with the NSC's schools/departments to implement an academic advising delivery system which places student learning, success, and retention as top priorities of their collaborative efforts. Advisors serve as generalists who are well-versed in the academic requirements for all majors and minors offered at NSC.

CORE RESPONSIBILITIES

* Assist first year and transfer students to define and develop realistic educational goals and explore career

* Identify and match special student needs and/or challenges with available institutional resources

* Monitor progress toward education/career goals

* Involve instructional faculty in advising and tracking students' progress

* Provide intervention and Early Alert strategies where and when necessary

* Effectively use NSC's academic advising software system in the performance of advising responsibilities

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS / COMPETENCIES

* Bachelor's degree

* 1-3 years experience in advising, assessment, counseling, or related fields

* Proficiency in the application of student advising and teaching laws, best practices and techniques

* Ability to creatively and independently problem solve while effectively managing multiple priorities

* Effective communication and interpersonal skills

* Demonstrated coordination, planning and organizational skills; attention to details

* Ability to work independently and collaboratively with others or in a team setting

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS / COMPETENCIES

* 3-5 years experience in advising, assessment, counseling, teaching or related fields

* Proficiency in the use and maintenance of an advising software system

* Proficiency in the use of student data base management platforms (e.g., PeopleSoft, BANNER, Datatel, SIS, SIS Plus)

Career Advisor, Science, Technology, Engineering, Math and Health Professions

Position Description:

UC Santa Cruz Santa Cruz, CA Career Advisor, Science, Technology, Engineering, Math and Health Professions Career Center JOB #0902380 Full Time; Temporary Minimum Starting Salary: $3,767/monthly. This position will provide career advising for the life science, health sciences, physical sciences, math, engineering majors and students considering these majors.

Duties

The focus of this position will be on working with students individually and in group workshops to explore career options and create career development plans, administering and interpreting career assessments, preparing students for the job search process including preparing resumes, cover letters, handing a job interviews and conducting effective job searches. The advisor will be expected to maintain up-to-date knowledge and information about career options in the sciences, math, engineering and the health professions and also will provide advice about finding and applying to graduate programs in these academic disciplines. In addition, this position will provide advising for health careers and for entry into graduate and post baccalaureate health professional programs including medical school, pharmacy school, nursing programs, physical therapy, and other professional health programs.

Required Qualifications:

Experience conducting career-planning workshops, advising sessions and student career action plans.

Multicultural competency and experience advising diverse groups of students and alumni.

Experience working with, advising and anticipating the needs of undergraduate, graduate and post doc students.

Oral and written communication skills including the ability to make effective group presentations, and to describe programs and provide information with clarity.

Experience developing, coordinating, organizing, and planning projects/programs.

COUNSELOR, LEARNING COMMUNITIES

Position Description

COUNSELOR, LEARNING COMMUNITIES (Non-tenured, temporary contract, specially funded) OVERVIEW: Reporting to the Associate Dean, Counseling, the Counselor for Learning Communities is responsible for providing counseling services to students enrolled in learning communities, as part of the college's Title 5 grant.

MAJOR DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

Provide academic, career and personal counseling for an ethnically and educationally diverse student population. Ability to interpret career assessment instruments and to facilitate groups, orientations, and workshops. Use and keep abreast of advanced counseling methods, including the use of current and future technologies, to support student success and career objectives Collaborate with Bridge Program staff to coordinate activities related to the Bridge Program and Learning Communities. Assist in planning and scheduling professional development opportunities for faculty. Develop reports related to grant activities. Participate in professional and co-curricular activities. Late afternoon and/or evening assignments may be required as part of the regular contract.

Required Qualifications:

A. One of the following:

1. A conferred/awarded Master's degree in Counseling, Rehabilitation Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Counseling Psychology, Guidance Counseling, Educational Counseling, Social Work, Career Development, Marriage & Family Therapy, or Marriage, Family & Child Counseling;

OR 2. California license as a Marriage & Family Therapist (MFT);

OR 3. Possession of a California life credential authorizing service as an instructor in the appropriate discipline at the community college level

B. Commitment to the community college goals/objectives of providing quality programs and services for students with diverse abilities and interests; personal qualities to work effectively and sensitively in a multicultural environment; awareness and commitment to the special needs of non-traditional students. Ability to communicate effectively in oral and written English.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Each of the following:

1. One year experience in working in programs related to the retention of at-risk, first generation college students

2. Familiarity with the theory and practice of learning communities

3. One year full-time (or the equivalent of part-time) experience in teaching or counseling

4. Ability to develop collaborative relationships with faculty from various disciplines

5. Experience in grant writing and report writing

SELECTION PROCEDURE:

A committee will evaluate applications, taking into account breadth and depth of relevant education, training, experience, skills, knowledge and abilities. Interviews may include a writing sample, board presentation, and/or performance test. The committee will recommend finalists to the college President for a second interview. Travel costs for over 150 miles one way will be reimbursed up to $500. The number of vacancies is dependent on student enrollment, College resources, needs and Board of Trustees' approval. Beginning date of employment is to be determined.

Additional Information:

This position is a grant funded, non-tenured track, full-time, eleven month contract. Placement on the salary schedule is based on formal education, full-time and/or part-time teaching and related work experience, up to a maximum placement at step 9.

Salary: Initial placement $59,763 - $95,469. The College contributes $9,745 toward annual premiums for medical, dental, vision and life insurance coverage. Lifetime retirement benefits provided for eligible retirees. *Subject to change based on Collective Bargaining Agreement.
