Position Description
The Coordinator of New Student Programs has primary responsibility for implementing programs related to incoming first year students and transfer students. The Coordinator works with academic and student service departments to develop and direct a comprehensive, cohesive experience for new students and parents. Duties
II. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
A. Planning
1. Work closely with campus stakeholders to ensure messages and program for new students are consistent with the goals and strategic directions of the University.
2. Collect and review feedback from new students, parents, student staff.
B. Student Staff
1. Provide leadership, direction, and support to those directly supervised.
2. Implement a comprehensive staff development program to prepare student staff to deliver new student orientation.
C. Program Management: Programs and Publications
1. Design, develop, implement, and assess orientation programs for first year and transfer students, including commuter students; correspond with new students and their families prior to Orientation and Welcome Weekend.
2. Work with the Office of Marketing and Communication on the development, delivery and distribution of major new student publications in consultation with campus colleagues, including Welcome (all deposits), New Student Resource Guide, Welcome Weekend mailer, and Parent's Guide for New Students,
3. Collaborate with the Information Services Coordinator and the Drahmann Center Operations Manager to maintain orientation database, management of new student information, and correspondence to new students between deposit and enrollment.
4. Implement mechanisms for collecting information, coordinating communications, and organizing events for new commuter students.
D. Program Assessment
1. Assess existing program offerings for new students, make recommendations as appropriate for current or future programs, and provide assessment for new student programs and initiatives.
E. Other Duties
1. Act as a liaison with other departments within the University and related outside groups for issues related to first year and transfer students and others as appropriate to area of responsibility.
2. Promote and encourage department collaboration between the Center and other University departments and offices.
3. Confer with, counsel, and advise students, parents, staff, and faculty regarding programs, services, and initiatives for new students.
Required Qualifications
III. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
* Bachelor's degree required. Masters Degree in student affairs, education, counseling or related field preferred.
* One to three years of increasingly responsible work in an academic setting, including substantial experience in orientation programs.
* Ability and willingness to work beyond conventional business hours as necessary in preparation for and during orientation.
* Demonstrated experience giving presentations and speaking to large groups.
* Demonstrated competency working with students of different backgrounds with a special sensitivity to how personal experiences affect the transition into the university environment.
* Excellent time management, organization, and ability to see assigned tasks through to completion. Skill and effectiveness in managing multiple projects concurrently, with several projects in various stages of completion.
* Excellent interpersonal skills, including effective oral and written communications with the campus community, internal customers, and team members to develop working relationships, secure and/or provide information, identify and resolve problems, and develop solutions to accomplish organizational goals.
* Sensitivity, discretion, and communication skills to interact effectively with students, parents, faculty, and staff across the campus

Thornton Student Affairs is seeking to fill the position of Senior Advisor (Student Services Advisor II). This is an exciting opportunity to play a leadership role on a team of highly committed advising professionals. The Senior Advisor will serve as an academic advisor and provide leadership.
Duties
1. Provide academic advisement to music majors and minors at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Responsibilities include holding one-on-one meetings with each student who is majoring in music each semester, advising by email, monitoring academic progress, evaluating student problems, preparing petitions, maintaining records, and collaborating with staff from other USC offices to support students as needed. 7. Participate in committees at the university level to provide input on the student and advisor experience.
8. Compile statistical data and prepare reports for internal and external use.
9. Assist in training other Thornton Student Affairs staff.
10. Assist the Director of Thornton Student Affairs in other projects and duties as assigned.

Duties
The Implementation Manager has the authority and responsibility to manage the work of the Council and ensure that its work moves forward. The incumbent (1) provides in-depth project and policy analyses to assist with strategy development and implementation; (2) works closely with the project team, the executive sponsor and other key senior executives, council members, advising managers, advisors, and other key stakeholders to manage the change effort and to ensure that the project meets key milestones and deliverables; (3) researches and stays current with best practices at peer institutions of higher education; and (4) works strategically to align project goals with other campus initiatives and system wide projects as appropriate. Position Description
Under the general guidance of the Registrar, the Institute Academic Advisor will coordinate and carry out the academic advisement of undergraduate students, with primary focus on new students, and students at risk academically. Supplementing the artistic advising and development by faculty mentors, the Institute Academic Advisor will introduce new students to Institute academic policies and procedures, assess and identify students in academic difficulty, make appropriate referrals to Institute services, and support student retention. Undergraduate Advising and Research (UAR) has an immediate opening for a Director of Upper-Division Advising and Pre-Professional Programs. The position is responsible for managing the process through which advising is offered in UAR's central advising office and for managing UAR's pre-professional advising effort. In so doing, s/he will interact regularly with faculty and academic departments, as well as with Student Affairs departments including: Residential Education, community centers, Counseling and Psychological Services, the Career Development Center, and the University Registrar.
The director is responsible for managing UAR's delivery of general academic advising services responsive to the specific needs and concerns of upper-division students (i.e., juniors, seniors, and co-terminal students) in both their undergraduate academic pursuits, and in their interest in applying to graduate and professional school. Duties
FUNCTIONS, DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
(30%) Upper-Division Advising Management
Manage the provision of 1:1 academic advising, group sessions, and larger programs and deliver information to upper-division undergraduate students (juniors, seniors, co-terminal students) on attaining a liberal education. Responsibilities include:
* Develop and manage delivery of academic advising services in the central advising office to upper-division students in support of the attainment of the Bachelor's Degree. Advising includes curricular exploration, counseling on course selection, long range academic planning, addressing academic difficulties, promoting academic opportunities and specialized work, and offering guidance with applications to graduate/professional schools; coordinating with offices across the university to maintain a safety net for students; and interacting with faculty and departments to ensure quality undergraduate advising.
* Identify and establish mechanisms to facilitate students' intellectual exploration and personal development via interaction between students and faculty.
* Create sound methods by which advisors will coach students on those interactions.
* Provide training and instruction for all advisors on how to offer guidance through course selection, program planning and choice of major; helping students define, develop, and achieve academic goals.
(30%) Academic Advising
Using expert knowledge of university organizational structure, curriculum, and policies, academic and extra-curricular programs/opportunities, and medical school application requirements, provide academic advising to undergraduate students via individual appointments/drop-ins, email, telephone, or group information sessions. Advising should include, but is not limited to, the following responsibilities:
* Provide individual general academic program planning, including investigation of the curriculum, choice of major, overseas study, research and fellowships, extra-curricular/academic opportunities, and post-baccalaureate study.
* Provide individual and group advising to undergraduates interested in health professions with attention to appropriate course selection relevant to pre-health requirements, the integration of courses for pre-health/major/university requirements, and integration with other academic opportunities (e.g., overseas studies, research).
* Advise (foremost upper-class) students in the application process for medical school or other health professions schools, selection of appropriate schools, and in the preparation of applications/personal statements.
* Provide counsel for students with performance concerns, for those at-risk academically, and for those on probation/provisional registration/impending suspension, to help them define the issues, concerns and behavior contributing to their academic difficulty, and to assist in developing plans, interventions and goals for resolution of problems.
* Provide counsel and direction to students at odds with university academic policies or deadlines.
* Provide direction and instruction for students considering a leave of absence, returning from a leave, or who have special academic circumstances or needs.
* Offer referral to appropriate university resources, programs, services, departments and faculty in relation to academic and personal needs.
* Maintain summary records of advising interactions in UAR/VPUE systems, adhering to university and VPUE policies and practices for handling confidential student information and applying judgment in determining which student issues to bring to the attention of senior VPUE advising staff.
(20%) Pre-Professional Programming
Through various formats and media, plan and oversee programming to address the academic, intellectual, extra-curricular, and welfare concerns for targeted student populations (e.g., pre-professional, class cohort, academic standing or enrollment status cohort, etc). Specifically, requirements for programming about graduate/professional school application should include, but are not limited to:
* Serve as a liaison to faculty representatives in academic departments, and lead discussions among departments whose course offerings are integral to the academic path for students applying to medical school to ensure courses necessary for medical school application are obtainable and coordinated to maximize opportunities for students who are pursuing medical school.
* Serve as a resource to other offices on campus regarding health professions advising, preparing and presenting pre-health workshops, and participating on panels as requested.
* Keep abreast of requirements for, and national and state trends in, professional school admissions for health professions. information pertaining to regional and national organizations (e.g., AAMC, AMCAS)
* Identify the need for, and manage the organization of panels and workshops related to pre-professional advising. These include, but are not limited to, New Student Orientation and Admit Weekend panels, mock interviews, and visits from representatives from pre-professional schools.
* To ensure that Stanford students are well-served in their efforts to gain admission to professional schools, oversee the collection, compilation and publication of statistical data on Stanford professional school applicants, including but not limited to total numbers of applicants, admits, school of admission, and characteristics of the applicant and admit pool.
* Host pre-professional events and visits to campus, and coordinate the exchange of information between academic departments at Stanford pertaining to pre-professional pursuits.
* Determine which web materials, and limited print materials related to pre-professional pursuits should be developed and posted.
(15%) Management and Supervision
Serve as a member of the UAR management team providing direction and growth/development of staff members through responsibilities that include, but are not limited to:
* Supervise three academic advisors.
* Oversee development of content and ensure quality of all pre-professional programs (health, law, business, education) by academic advisors.
* Oversee professional development of direct reports.
* Ensure comprehensive understanding by all UAR advisors of Stanford's curriculum, and academic rules, processes and procedures.
* Ensure pre-professional programming needs are identified and addressed on an annual basis.
* Ensure appropriate distribution of workload among academic advisors.
* Coordinate with other managers within UAR to establish consistent, clear, and efficient advising practices which are optimal in serving the undergraduate student population wherever students seek advising.
(5%) Academic Advising Administration
* Using expert knowledge of university policy, academic advising, and undergraduate education, assist with the design and implementation of the broad range of processes and projects administered by UAR. Administrative responsibilities should include, but may not be limited to, the following:
* Participate as a key team member for processes related to academic progress and academic policy (i.e., petitions and Academic Standing), applying university policies and VPUE practices to recommend outcomes and improve procedures.
* Review petitions related to academic policy, and participation in the overall office procedures through which petitions are managed.
* Assist, where needed, in the gathering of data related to academic standing, and participation in the overall office procedures through which academic standing is managed.
* Use software tools (e.g., Excel and other databases) necessary for the collection and presentation of data related to academic advising and special programs.
* Assist associate dean, when appropriate, with the preparation of reports.
* Support associate dean in the implementation of academic advising initiatives, contributing to the development of strategies for the achievement of UAR objectives.
Required Qualifications
MA/MS required; PhD/Terminal Degree preferred
