Package #1 – Conducting Professional Development

Koring.jpg
Heidi Koring, Director of Academic Advising at Lynchburg College and past Chair of the Advisor Training and Development Commissions, notes that advisor training and development is the foundation of any first-rate advising program; yet even rudimentary advisor training is absent from many institutions. Where do you start when putting together high quality professional development workshops? How do you implement interactive advisor training that teaches advisors needed skills, makes them eager to attend subsequent training events, and has them recommending your professional development sessions to others? This package of NACADA resources provides needed developmental advising materials for both the novice and expert trainer.

Package #2Advising Diverse Student Groups

Gilbert.jpg

Incoming NACADA Multicultural Concerns Commission Chair Cornelius Gilbert (Academic Advisor, University of Wisconsin-Madison) believes that the preparation advisors receive should "include a consciousness component that allows us to gain an awareness of our beliefs and attitudes as they pertain to multiculturalism" (Academic Advising Today, 2005, September).

Blane Harding (Academic Advisor Coordinator, Colorado State University) notes that many campus administrators incorporate diversity awareness into their strategic plans. Successful advisors recognize that diversity extends beyond race and ethnicity to include gender, geographic mobility, traditional/non-traditional student status, military experience, abilities and challenges, and much more. Likewise, advisors know that quality professional development helps us serve the increasingly diverse student populations on our campuses.

Harding.jpg

Campuses across the country use NACADA resources to help advisors develop their cultural advising skills. The CDs listed below can be used individually or in groups to establish the basic foundation of cultural identity. The Foundations of Academic Advising CD is mandatory for anyone interested in multicultural concerns and advising. The Advising Special Populations chapter “Multicultural Advising in an Increasingly Diverse Academic World” suggests successful strategies, fills in details, and provides additional examples that can be used to broaden understanding and start meaningful conversations.

These resources are excellent starting points for further exploration.

Package #3 – Writing an Academic Advising Syllabus & Learning Outcomes

tranbant.jpg

Tonya Trabant, University of Wisconsin advisor and author, tells us that advising syllabi help frame the importance and scope of advising, for our students, administrators, and colleagues alike. By using NACADA's resources, developing a syllabus can be a simple yet powerful act that moves your advising forward.

In Academic Advising Syllabus: Advising as Teaching in Action, Karen Thurmond notes that the syllabus is considered the "common language" used by students, faculty, advisors, and administrators to define outcomes, expectations, and assessment of learning.

The resources listed below will provide you with the basics needed to develop and utilize an academic syllabus on your campus. Additionally, information from the Guide to Assessment in Advising, Student Learning Outcomes Pocket Guide, and Learning Reconsidered 2 will help campuses determine and measure the learning outcomes needed by accreditation agencies.

This popular package includes:

  • DW02CDAcademic Advising Syllabus: Advising as Teaching in Action - Webinar CD (Member Price $125)

Package #4 – Developing Faculty Advisor Training

Rhonda Sprague, University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point and Faculty Advising Commission Chair, notes that the majority of colleges and universities depend upon faculty members to serve as advisors. As such, faculty advising responsibilities are deeply embedded in the institutional mission. Yet surprisingly little is being done systemically to encourage quality faculty advising, to craft faculty advisor development programs, and to recognize and offer incentives for excellence in advising. Faculty members who find creative methods of advising while doing teaching, scholarship, or service activities will find it considerably easier to "do it all."

In this package Jayne Drake (Temple University) addresses the need for broad institutional commitment to faculty advising from key stakeholders; the importance of clearly articulated mission, process, and goal statements; the components of a successful faculty advisor development program; and the incentives and "rewards" important in acknowledging and promoting excellence in advising.

Those charged with the development of faculty advisors’ skills will find the “Components of a Successful Faculty Advising Program” CD illuminating when paired with Learning Reconsidered 2 and the companion Professional Development package.

  • DW03CDComponents of a Successful Faculty Advising Program - Webinar CD (Member Price $125)

Package #5 – Welcoming New Students – Smooth Transitions

White.jpg

After many years of observation and study, the significance of recognizing the needs of college students in transition cannot be overlooked or dismissed. Specifically, how the transition from high school to college and the subsequent first year of college is negotiated is critical to the success of the student. Likewise, the transition from one institution of higher education to another is also a time for a potential misstep. How to assist these students in their transitions and who has the responsibility, obligation, and opportunity to foster smooth transitions is covered in the following publications.

Peers, family, academic advisors and a host of other individuals need to be aware of the nature of these transitions for college students; the strategies available to them; and the research and theory behind these strategies and new approaches.  Retaining students and increasing graduation rates is important to society in general, to the institutions which the students attend and, specifically, to the students and their families. The resources in these publications are useful to anyone concerned with these transitions and the subsequent success of students.  Eric White, Penn State University-University Park

Engaging the First Year Student has received a lot of attention in the past few years. Colleges and Universities have implemented classes, mentoring programs, support groups, peer programs, and other innovative initiatives. Many of these programs are backed by a strong philosophical background of student development, positive psychology and generally improving the student’s self-efficacy. The statistics are truly indicative of improved student retention and success.

As a community college, we have piloted courses, programs, and studied all of the new philosophies. After all was said and done and evaluated, we have found all of the philosophies and programs can be an inherent part of an integrative Academic Advisement System by using the “idea of one”. It has been said by many that it only takes the connection and the engagement of one person to make a difference in the success of a student. Our students have expressed over the years, that one of the most important components of their success has been individual academic advisement.  Becky Boyd, Johnson County Community College
