NACADA Webcasts
 Recordings - Technology and Advising

In December 2007, led by Webinar Advisory Board Chair Karen Thurmond, NACADA broadcast its first online discussion on The Future of Academic Advising and Technology, which we are now able to make available for viewing in streaming format free of charge for all our membersAs Karen stated in her opening remarks of the 90-minute presentation, we “went where no NACADA webinar has gone before” in our efforts to allow our members to “see and experience uses of readily available [technology] applications to enhance academic advising and engage our students.”  Creative NACADA “early adopters” defined social-networking for us and demonstrated successful application of user-created content and social-networking tools in advising.

During this webinar, presenter Art Esposito used the application sharing feature to discuss some of his uses of Virtual Supplemental Advising with his advisees at Virginina Commonwealth University.  The Internet was a bit sluggish that day, and the platform that we had at that time was not able to show everything Art wanted to share, so following the event, he created THIS VIDEO for our viewers.

In the years since this event was broadcast, these presenters – along with many other NACADA “early adopters” – have “pushed these technologies to enter Main Street at their respective institutions,” and have moved far beyond this early work in “live classroom,” podcasting, and supplemental virtual advising.       As George Steele explained, “this is certainly a time of change in the field of academic advising, and certainly a time of change in terms of our use of technology.”  We are delighted to have tools and venues that allow us to share some of what these innovative advisors and advising administrators have developed in the years since this initial broadcast, and we look forward to seeing how the creativity will continue to develop in the years to come!

Creative Utilization of Technology in Academic Advising
WEBCAST presented November 20, 2008 (77 minutes - Videocast format - ISBN No. 978-1-935140-63-4 )

Back by Popular Demand!  Webinar Advisory Board Chair Karen Thurmond returns with team members from our December 2007 broadcast (see above) and a new addition to tell us more about what's "on the horizon" in the area of technology that we can harness creatively to assist us in engaging our students.

In this videocast presentation, Terry Musser (Penn State University), Art Esposito (Virginia Commonwealth University) and Wes Lipschultz (University of Pittsburgh):

  • explain why "meme" is the word of choice to describe what Web 2.0 is - as well as how its use is important to understanding how technology may be viewed pragmatically by advisors
  • explain how Social Media applications (such as instant messaging, social networking, podcasts, and wikis), when viewed through the lens of Web 2.0, can and should be manipulated by advisors and advisees for whatever purposes they see fit
  • provide easy inroads to these applications that may help you engage your advisee population
  • discuss how we as advisors may add unique value to the applications, and our advisees may add unique value as well
  • add to their previous discussion of Facebook usage with advisees by explaining how many NACADA members are using this tool for professional networking

At the time of this presentation, Terry, Art, and Wes - all technology "early adopters" - had already been utilizing these applications for several years and found each of them invaluable tools to connect with their students. Further, they found that maintenance of profiles in student environments, if exercised with caution, can lead to a greater sense of our relevance in the lives of our advisees, thereby making our counsel and advice more effective.

One participant said this event really helped generate ideas to put into practice.

Others found particularly helpful:

  • That Googledocs is a good way to keep an academic plan current and accessible. Reference pages are very good. The different types of technology for communicating.
  • Learning about the way that other institutions use social networking technology
  • Good, basic description of Web 2.0....and how it can help us in a variety of ways in academic advising.
  • Having examples of how technology is being used in advising, opening the discussion of web 2.0, the applications, and uses of that technology, explanation of Googledocs, and webinar references page
  • Ethical conversation, intro to options, googledocs & IM usage, ideas/resources/examples/tools.
  • List of resources. Knowing what NACADA is doing with the new technologies. Names of institutions using the technologies

Getting Connected: Using Online Resources to Support Academic Advising Professionals

Segment from WEBCAST presented April 27, 2011 (42 minutes - Slidecast format - ISBN No. 978-1-935140-85-6)

LauraPasquini.jpgIn our April 2011 Webinar, three creative advising professionals discussed Strategies for Increasing Advising Effectiveness with Decreasing Resources in the areas of advisor professional development, group advising, and technology usage.  Feedback of event viewers indicated that, while all three of the areas discussed were of interest and valuable to segments of the audience, not all viewers found all three elements applicable to their situation.  Therefore, the segments have been separated to make them available to our members more cost-effectively.

In this segment, NACADA Technology in Advising Commission Chair-Elect Laura Pasquini (University of North Texas) defines and discusses

  • advisor learning networks, social media, and Web 2.0 (including Facebook and LinkedIn)
  • how to initiate online conversations and keep them going (including Twitter and Tweetchat - and the introduction of #AdvCon)
  • saving and storing resources online (including RRS and readers, social bookmarking)
  • digital learning and training (including blogs, slideshare, virtual presentations)
  • shared work spaces (including googledocs, wikis, dropbox)

Participants said:

  • Great webinar @laurapasquini , we really enjoyed it. It's gonna take a while to get thru it all, but some great stuff! #nacadaDW40
  • @NACADA, @laurapasquini One of the best #nacada webinars yet!
  • Helped us understand the value and effectiveness of technology
  • Helped us think about how we can more effectively use technology in our work, not only with our students, but also with/for ourselves

  • Innovations in internet-based document-sharing and presentation-sharing

Leading Forward: Technology Planning for Sustainable Advising

WEBINAR presented September 14, 2011 (58 minutes - Videocast format - ISBN No. 978-1-935140-84-9)

Joslin-Pasquini.jpgAdvising units all over the world are being asked to do more with less.  Today’s students – both on campus and at a distance – are coming to us with higher expectations of technology usage than earlier generations.  We feel the “push” from all directions to try new forms of technology to meet our students’ wants and needs.  We recognize that the campus of the future must create a dynamic learning experience for our students, staff, and professionals.  So where do we begin?  In this videocast presentation, NACADA President-Elect Jennifer Joslin (University of Oregon) and NACADA Technology in Advising Commission Chair-Elect Laura Pasquini (University of North Texas) share their ideas on developing a “big picture” for communication and strategic planning for the implementation of technology in academic advising.  Rather than trying everything, they contend, it is important to decide what we want to do, and then move forward to do it well.

Whether you are an individual advisor in a small departmental situation or the administrator of a large advising unit, this presentation offers a space for you to “step back” and consider process and planning, weaving a strategic plan for advising into the larger picture of technology on campus.  Where do you want to go?  How will you get there?

Participants said, I appreciated the concept of creating a strategic advising plan that brings multiple stake-holders to the table, and focuses on doing ONE thing extremely well.

Others found particularly helpful:

  • Examples of successful blogs/wikis of other institutions.
  • Pick one technology and develop it well!
  • Looking ahead to how technology will help acadmic admising, the need is great
  • The opportunity to discuss after and see how technology might be leveraged at our campus
  • Some of the projects that were implemented on campuses were inspiring and useful.
