Personal digital repository in your pocket, Web 2.0, emerging forms of the book… Does all this sound like science fiction? The core of the 2007 Horizon Report (published by the New Media Consortium and the EDUCAUSE Learning Initiative) describes six areas of emerging technology that will impact higher education within three adoption horizons over the next one to five years. The focus of the Horizon Project centers on the applications of emerging technologies to teaching, learning, and creative expression. The Horizon Advisory Board reviewed key trends in the practice of teaching, learning, and creativity, and ranked those it considered most important for campuses to watch Consider the time to adoption for each of these ideas. For those innovations listed in the “Time-to-Adoption Horizon: One Year or Less,” this use of technology is upon us. Our students are already engaged in activities and behaviors which embrace this technology. The question for advisors has been, and continues to be, how to use these tools to better reach and teach our students in advising, and how to make the decision on what technologies we will use.

Participants in this Webinar will:

  • Review some trends for campuses to watch pertaining to application of emerging technologies
  • Discover selected emerging technologies in the first adoption horizon (1-2 years) which may impact our response to the challenge
  • Participate in demonstration of technology applications for use in academic advising
  • Discuss the role of academic advisors in the selection of emerging technologies for our campuses

Those participating in this Webinar with a group may wish to bring laptops (with internet access) for individualized viewing of recommended Websites. Individual participants may also wish to obtain a laptop (with internet access) or second computer for engaged participation.
