In this Kansas State University College of Education / NACADA-sponsored Webinar presentation, our Presenter will discuss advising student-athletes on a college campus.  Participants will leave this session with a beginning skill set and knowledge base that will assist them in advising student-athletes on their campus.

Areas highlighted will include:

  • Self Check-in on biases related to sport and student-athletes
  • Social Issues of sport and how these larger issues impact daily advising
  • Academic Reform and its impact on advising
  • Athletic Department Culture, including how to connect with this group on campus
  • Campus collaboration and how to best work towards servicing student-athlete needs
  • Unique elements of student-athletes and how to use this information to best advise student-athletes
  • Particular focus on career issues as it relates to student-athletes
  • Application of student development theories to the student-athlete population
  • Legal and Ethical issues that may arise when working with student-athletes

 

Presenter will:

  • sensitize participants to larger social issues that may impact the experience of a student-athlete on a college campus
  • encourage participants to engage in self-reflection to determine how their personal biases may impact their work with student-athletes
  • introduce participants to factors unique to the student-athlete population that may impact the student-athlete’s experience on a college campus
  • provide participants with information on how to best engage with the athletic department on their campus to provide collaborative services to student-athletes
  • provide strategies for participants on how to best work with the entire campus in delivering services to college student-athletes
  • provide participants with a beginning skill set and knowledge base that they can used to best work with this specific student population

Who is our Presenter? Derek Van Rheenen.jpg

Derek Van Rheenen

Director, Athletic Study Center

University of California, Berkeley

Derek Van Rheenen has served as the Director of U.C. Berkeley's Athletic Study Center since 2001. He has also been a member of the faculty in U.C. Berkeley's Department of Education since 1997, designing and teaching courses such as Sport, Education and American Culture; Education and the Student Athlete and Academic Support Services for Student Athletes. He co-designed and co-directs the Masters of Arts Program, Athletes and Academic Achievement, within the U.C. Berkeley Graduate School of Education. Derek was a four-year letterman and Academic All-American as an intercollegiate soccer player at U.C.Berkeley and played professional soccer for the San Francisco Bay Blackhawks from 1988-1993.

 

Derek received his Ph.D. in Cultural Studies from U.C. Berkeley in 1997. His publications include Boys Who Play Hopscotch: The Historical Divide of a Gendered Space, Noncognitive Predictors of Student Athletes' Academic Performance and Academic Motivation and the Student Athlete. Derek also serves as a member of the Editorial Board for the Academic Athletic Journal.
