Check out the city's official website for extensive information on the many downtown and area attractions.

Back by popular demand-the Interactive Schedule Planner was a big hit last year. Use it before you arrive at the Conference to identify individual sessions you want to attend.

Check the Registration Brochure you recently received in the mail (also available online) for an overview of the Conference schedule and highlights of the official events. There's also information on discounted airline and car rental fees.

Most of the official hotels still have availability. Make your reservation online.

Are you looking for a roommate to defray hotel costs? You can sign up or look for others here. Individuals contact each other directly; NACADA simply maintains the list.

Conference presentations represent over forty advising "tracks" or topics. A few titles:

•  "Finding Your Way" an Innovative Freshman Seminar

•  "What You Know is Who You Are:" Counteracting Racial Ignorance through Self-Exploration

•  A Never-Ending Story: The Plot and Language of Academic Advising

•  Academic Advising and College Sports: Reclaiming the Academic Priority

•  Academic Advising from the Student's Perspective: Significance, Satisfaction, and Challenges

One good way to GET INVOLVED and meet new people is to VOLUNTEER for a couple of hours at the Conference. Sign up by contacting Larry Ottinger (Ball State University) at lottinge@bsu.edu.   Also, meetings of the Association's various governance units that take place during the Conference provide a myriad of opportunities for you to get involved and contribute to your Association!  Check your Conference Schedule and plan ahead to PARTICIPATE!

Potential INTEREST GROUPS to Meet in Indianapolis!

Three Potential Interest Groups will be meeting at the Annual Conference in Indianapolis to determine their viability and level of interest among NACADA members - Advising Public & Urban Affairs Majors, Appreciative Advising, and Large Universities

  • The Advising Public & Urban Affairs Majors Potential Interest Group is committed to providing quality resource information to academic advisors of students majoring in areas that affect public policy and professional practices in urban and/or metropolitan environments, and may be of interest to academic advisors of students in disciplines such as Public Administration, Social Work, Criminal Justice, and Environmental Studies.
  • The focus of the Appreciative Advising Potential Interest Group is on how the organizational development theory of Appreciative Inquiry can be utilized in academic advising.
  • The Large Universities Potential Interest Group will provide NACADA members from large universities the opportunity to make connections and learn about other programs by establishing a forum for advisers to discuss current issues, share ideas and gather information from those at peer institutions.

Check your Conference program for the date, time and location of these meetings. If you are interested in one of these special interest areas, please plan to attend the scheduled meeting for that group to show your support. NACADA members who have an interest in these potential Interest Groups but are not planning to attend the Conference this year are encouraged to send an e-mail indicating their interest prior to the Annual Conference to the contact person listed below. This will assist this individual with more accurately determining the level of interest in that particular group.

Look for New Publications at the Annual Conference!
Three of NACADA's newest professional development resources will be featured at the NACADA Annual Conference in October:
Learning Reconsidered 2:  A Practical Guide to Implementing a Campus-Wide Focus on the Student Experience - NACADA partnered with ACPA, ACUHO-I, ACUI, NACA, NASPA, and NIRSA in publishing this book.  For more information click here.
Foundations of Academic Advising - CD Series:  CD2 Academic Advising Delivery Models - This CD explains the seven most widely used advising delivery models (self-contained, faculty only, satellite, total intake, dual, split, supplementary) and discusses why they are an important consideration when assessing, evaluating, or re-evaluating any advising system.
Academic Advising:  New Insights for Teaching and Learning in the First Year (Monograph #14 - orders only taken at the Conference for later availability) - This new monograph challenges readers to embrace the tremendous potential that academic advising has for educating today's college students and adds significantly to the engaging dialogue on advising as teaching.  Chapter authors explore the advising as teaching and learning paradigm, examine current student demographics, and address learning patterns, self-assessment, and technology as key components of advising.  Chapters also explore academic advising before enrollment and beyond the advising office, as well as the critical issue of advising assessment.  The needs of diverse populations of first-year students are also addressed.  This monographs is a joint publication of the National Resource Center for the First-Year Experience and Students in Transition and NACADA.

Stop by the NACADA exhibit booth at the Indiana Convention Center to obtain your copy or to place your order for these new resources!

Regional Conferences - Mark your calendars now!

The Region Conference Committees are working to prepare great Regional Conferences in all ten Regions this spring. Dates and locations are listed here

In September or October, each Region will issue a "Call for Presentations," so you may want to begin visiting with your colleagues about possible team efforts or preparing ideas for your own participation. Each year, the Regions select a "Best of Region" presentation, which is then sponsored to the National Conference. So, round up your ideas, mark your calendar for the Regional Conference(s) of your choice and watch for further details! You may be the one to represent your Region at the National Conference in Baltimore in 2007!

Advising in the Spotlight
The July 27 issue of Inside Higher Ed brings national exposure to academic advising in its feature article "Many Advisers, One Message."  The programs featured in this article all gained information and guidance through attendance at NACADA Institutes.
September Membership Renewals Due

Renewal notices have been sent to those with a membership expiration date of September 1.  Please make any necessary changes to the form and return it with payment to the executive office.  Your membership is important to NACADA's continued growth and its success in promoting the field of academic advising, and provides discounts for NACADA events and resources.  We appreciate your support.

CAS sponsored assessment symposium in November

The Council for the Advancement Standards (CAS) is sponsoring a national symposium, November 12-14, 2006, on CAS Standards, Self Assessment, and Student Learning Outcomes in Higher Education. Click here for information.
