December Webinar

On the Horizon: The Future of Academic Advising and Technology

Live Internet Webinar Broadcast

Wednesday, December 12, 2007

Join us for our most daring online adventure to date, when Karen Thurmond (The University of Memphis), George Steele (The Ohio Learning Network), Arthur Esposito (Virginia Commonwealth University), Joline Vanderwal (Regent University), Wes Lipschultz (Penn State University), and Clay Schwenn and Kurt Xyst (University of Washington) take us "where no NACADA Webinar has gone before!" Along with telling us about some of the exciting technology-related innovations they are using on their campuses to engage advisees, our Presenters will be giving us the opportunity to experience what happens when we use "streaming video" in this medium, showing us how they use "flash" technology, and explaining what we can learn from the 2007 Horizon Report.

Registration deadline is December 4, so don't miss your chance! LEARN MORE and REGISTER now to secure your participation!

Advising by Design: Planning the Future of Academic Advising on Your Campus  -

  • Where will your advising program be in three years? in five years? in ten years?
  • Will advising be central to the academic experiences on your campus and funded and staffed as such?
  • Or will advising be viewed as an "add-on" with limited funding and limited staffing?
  • Who will do the needed planning and make these decisions? You or others less committed to the advising experiences of students?

Join us February 14-15 to take advantage of this opportunity to explore processes, terminology, and strategies, as well as work with model case studies to develop strategic plans focusing on advising on your campus and ensure you know the answers to the questions above!

Participants will leave with a new plan for developing a strategic plan for the future on their campus, or they may bring their current plan to focus on and revise. Click HERE for details.

6th Annual Academic Advising Administrators' Institute - The Administrators' Institute will be held February 17-19. Institute Learning Communities and Faculty will provide an environment for participants to:

  • Find guidance in the development of an implementation plan for improvement or change on your campus
  • Respond to the latest issues appearing on campuses and facilitate a process through which you may better understand the issues, skills, and knowledge
  • Address issues within your academic advising programs
  • Utilize the resources and expertise available to you
  • Help develop a clearer sense of your academic advising programs, how to effectively administer them, and how your programs should fit within your own institution
  • Network and learn from administrators from a variety of institutional types and sizes

NEW THIS YEAR - an "Experienced" track!

Are you an administrator who has campus-wide responsibility for academic advising? This year's Institute will offer a special track for campus-wide academic advising administrators which may include Directors, Associate Deans, Deans, Chief Academic and Student Affairs Officers, Provosts and Presidents.

This track will function as a cohort working primarily with Dr. Nancy King, Vice President for Student Success and Enrollment Services, at Kennesaw State University. Dr. King is internationally renowned for her work in leadership and administration. In addition to networking and working on key issues in advising administration, this "think tank on academic advising" will include consideration of important questions that concern experienced administrators:

  • What is the vision for academic advising's role in the future of higher education?
  • How can chief campus leaders strategically advance that role and what leadership skills are required to be most effective?
  • How does advising relate to our institutions' teaching and learning mission and how does it affect our retention, progression and graduation rates?
  • What are the future trends in technology that will impact advising in the next five years?
  • In the aftermath of recent tragedies on campuses, what part do experienced administrators play in developing and implementing crisis response plans?
  • What are some of the legal and ethical issues related to advising that concern advising administrators?

Enrollment in this track is limited, so enroll early!

We are looking forward to the sixth Administrators' Institute and to providing an opportunity for participants to enjoy San Diego this winter!  Click HERE to find last minute information on the plenary sessions, concurrent sessions, schedule, and Action Plans!

5th Annual Assessment of Academic Advising Institute - The Assessment Institute will be held February 20-22. The Institute is divided into groups to meet your individual needs. Visit the updated WEBSITE for information on the different groups that will be networking together at the Institute, and to see a tentative schedule.

The Assessment of Academic Advising Institute provides a foundation for participants regarding assessment's critical elements, purposes, and processes. Through presentations and small group discussion/working sessions, participants explore strategies for the assessment of academic advising programs-including establishing clear goals and outcomes and developing assessment measures for these goals and outcomes. The Institute provides participants with an understanding of the cyclical and ongoing nature of assessment. Most importantly, the Institute offers participants the opportunity to work with colleagues from similar institutional types and with other professionals and experts in the fields of advising and assessment to develop comprehensive assessment plans for their respective campuses. Join other colleagues as they work through the process of making Assessment a success. Bring a team from your institution to get your Assessment program up and running!

It is critical that you book your lodging as early as possible. The deadline for receiving the discounted hotel rate is January 25, 2008, but the hotel may fill prior to that deadline. Visit the Doubletree Hotel RESERVATION site today!

Faculty Advising Seminar

Faculty Advising: Collaborating for Success

June 19-20, 2008 in Portsmouth, Va.

Faculty members have an essential and vital role in the academic advising experiences of students on most campuses. Data in the NACADA 2004 publication, The Status of Academic Advising, indicates that over 80% of four-year institutions, almost 50% of public two-year colleges and 80% of private two-year institutions utilize models which rely on faculty involvement in academic advising. Since faculty play such an integral role in academic advising, it is imperative that faculty and administrators work together to assure that faculty have the information, tools and resources to effectively engage in the advising process.

This two-day seminar will provide participants with the opportunity to enhance faculty advising and programs as well as gain essential insights on ways to foster collaboration between faculty and administrators responsible for advising. Click here to learn more.

NACADA Academic Advising Summer Institutes

2008 NACADA Academic Advising Summer Institutes

June 22-27 - Portsmouth, Va.

and

July 27-August 1 - Austin, Texas

Join administrators, advisors and faculty advisors for a comprehensive look at academic advising today. Along with general sessions, workshops and topicals, participants develop an Action Plan for enhancing or improving advising on their individual campuses. You might be interested in looking at descriptions of some of the Action Plans prepared for past Institutes.

Plan now to arrange for teams or individuals from your institution to attend in 2008! And YES! - A limited number of scholarships are available for Summer Institute attendance. Applications will be available in December on the Annual Awards Program website and will be due by early March.

Because many institutions have varying summer schedules and the Institute has limited enrollment/faculty ratios, we offer the Institute two times each summer. So, choose either by date or location - we welcome you at either one! Register soon to ensure your participation!

More information will be available on the Summer Institute webpage soon!

Summer Institute Faculty – NACADA will soon be selecting faculty for the 2008 Summer Institutes. If you wish to be considered, please be sure that your listing in the NACADA Expertise Database is up-to-date. If you have previously registered with the Expertise Database and wish to update your information, simply register again by including your name and marking any additional topics or levels of expertise you wish to add. Multiple entries by the same person are merged at the Executive Office, thus negating the need for you to re-enter all information with each update. Presentations at regional and national conferences enhance your opportunity to be selected by providing evaluative data upon which to make selections.

2008 Leadership Election Information

The slate of candidates for the 2008 NACADA Leadership elections is available on the NACADA website. Each candidate's platform statement will be linked to her/his name on this list for your review within the next few weeks. Additional details on the 2008 elections and online voting procedures will be sent to members and will also be available soon on the election webpage.

NOTE: Only those individuals whose NACADA memberships are current and paid in full as of Friday, January 25, 2008, will be eligible to vote in the 2008 elections. If you know of individuals whose memberships expired on September 1, 2007 and have not yet been renewed, please encourage them to complete this renewal immediately to secure their voting privileges for NACADA's future leadership.

All information and forms can be accessed on the NACADA Annual Awards Program website. The deadline for the receipt of nomination materials for most award categories is March 3, 2008. Refer to the 2008 Call for Nominations on the Awards website for more detailed information about all award categories, applicable eligibility criteria, and submission procedures.

Using the Digest Format for List Serves

To help minimize the number of e-mails you receive that are generated from list serves, you might want to consider setting up each of your list subscriptions for the "digest" mode. All you need to do is send an e-mail using only the following command in the body of the message, where "listname" is the list's ID (such as N-ADVADMIN for the Advising Administration Commission list serve):

SET listname DIGEST

Leave the subject line blank. Be sure to delete any signature lines and/or turn off auto-inclusion of your signature file before sending the above command. (LISTSERV treats signature lines as commands and will send error messages saying "unknown command".)

Should you set the digest mode and then decide later that you prefer the original format and want to turn off the digest mode, follow the same procedures as outlined above, but include the following command in the e-mail body:

Set listname mail

Note: A downside to using the digest format is that, each time you reply to the list, all of the history that is there gets posted to the digest every time. It could make the digested e-mails too long to bother reading unless you can convince other subscribers to edit their e-mails to remove all of the history.

Note: NACADA list serves do not support attachments, primarily due to the risk of viruses. To share information in document form with other subscribers, you will need to post it on your institution's website and provide a link, or ask colleagues to contact you individually to request that the information be sent to them directly. You could also include the text directly in your e-mail posting.

Did you sign up to volunteer for the 2008 Annual Conference in Chicago?

The list of volunteers compiled in Baltimore was thrown away when the booths were dismantled on Saturday, October 20. If you signed up to volunteer for the 2008 Chicago conference and have not already contacted her, please email Bev Martin at bmartin@ksu.edu.  Thanks for your help in creating a new list and for volunteering!
