Advising 2.0: Utilizing Technology Effectively for Campus-wide Advising - February 12-13, 2009

"Is your campus utilizing technology effectively for academic advising?"  If your answer is "no," or even "I don't know," then this year's NACADA Annual Seminar, Advising 2.0: Utilizing Technology Effectively for Campus-wide Advising, is for you!  The seminar, held in sunny Clearwater Beach, Fla., February 12-13, 2009, focuses on technology tools and issues that can effectively be utilized on your campus.  Participants will have "hands-on" experiences in developing strategies for utilizing technology tools in academic advising.

This exciting seminar moves NACADA and academic advising to a new paradigm.  To meet the academic advising needs of your campus, we encourage you to come experience this challenging seminar and obtain the skills and ideas needed to effectively implement plans for your campus utilization of technology.

Visit the seminar website for more information.

7th Annual Academic Advising Administrators' Institute - February 15-17, 2009

Learning Communities and Faculty will provide an environment for participants to find guidance in the development of an action plan for improvement or change on your campus and network and learn from administrators from a variety of institutional types and sizes.

New this year to the Administrators' Institute:

. The Small Group Discussions will focus on three areas, New Advising Administrators (less than three years), Experienced Advising Administrators (more than three years) and Administrators (Dean, VP, Provost) Directing Multiple areas, including advising. Enjoy this opportunity to network with colleagues who are facing the same challenges on their campuses!

. Faculty Consultations - An afternoon will be set aside for participants to sign up for one-on-one time with faculty members. Sign up to receive feedback from one faculty member or several different faculty! This is your opportunity to network with other faculty members besides your small group faculty member. We are here to answer questions!

Visit the institute website to learn more.

6th Annual Assessment of Academic Advising Institute - February 18-20, 2009

The Assessment of Academic Advising Institute provides a foundation for participants regarding assessment's critical elements, purposes, and processes. Through presentations and small group discussion/working sessions, participants explore strategies for the assessment of academic advising programs-including establishing clear goals and outcomes and developing assessment measures for these goals and outcomes. The Institute provides participants with an understanding of the cyclical and ongoing nature of assessment. Most importantly, the Institute offers participants the opportunity to work with colleagues from similar institutional types and with other professionals and experts in the fields of advising and assessment to develop comprehensive assessment plans for their respective campuses. Join other colleagues as they work through the process of making assessment a success. Bring a team from your institution to get your assessment program up and running!

Visit the website to see a tentative schedule.

It is critical that you book your lodging as early as possible. The deadline for receiving the discounted hotel rate is January 16, 2009, but the hotel may fill prior to that deadline. Visit the Hilton Clearwater Beach Resort website today!

Join administrators, advisors and faculty advisors for a comprehensive look at academic advising today. Along with general sessions, workshops and topicals, you will develop an Action Plan for enhancing or improving advising on your individual campus.

Plan now! Arrange for teams or individuals from your institution to attend in 2009! Many institutions have varying summer schedules and the Institute has limited enrollment/faculty ratios, so we offer the Institute two times each summer.   Join us in Kansas City, June 28-July 3, OR New Orleans, July 26-July 31, 2009.   With the current economic concerns in mind, we have selected these centrally located cities, both with easy accessibility by air or auto.  We are also keeping registration fees the same as last year!  So, choose the date or location to fit your needs and we welcome you at either one! Register soon to ensure your participation! Program outlines are available on the Summer Institute webpage and information will be posted as it becomes available!

Scenes for Learning and Reflection DVD image

Jayne Drake, NACADA Vice President and Video Advisory Board Chair, shares the top 10 reasons why your institution should purchase the new NACADA Advisor Training & Development DVD.

Scenes for Learning and Reflection: An Academic Advising Professional Development DVD

10. It presents 10 advising vignettes that all advisors can relate to in a broadcast quality DVD.

 9. Scenes are "authentic," using real students, real professional and faculty advisors, and real advising administrators in "typical" advising settings.

 8. Topics for these scenes are "top of the list" suggested by members of NACADA Commissions and Interest Groups.

 7. The DVD provides strategies for dealing with transfer student issues, first generation students, student-athletes, student confidentiality, and much more!

 6. Proactive ways to work with the parents are highlighted in one scene sure to be familiar to advisors.

 5. The questions following each scene are calculated to stimulate lively conversation about the issues raised and how those issues apply to your campus.

 4. The package includes a supplemental CD with downloadable (and printable) discussion questions, as well as NACADA's Core Values, Concept of Advising, and the CAS Standards for Advising - all designed to stimulate advisor discussions.

 3. The DVD can be used for advisor and faculty retreats, in workshops, and in other campus professional development settings.

 2. Advisor trainers can use any combination of scenes they deem appropriate to the needs of their audience.

 1. It will help transform advising services in higher education around the world!

Lead the way on your campus by providing a cutting-edge tool for your advisors. Find out more information regarding the DVD (including how to purchase using your member discount). Click to preview a scene from the DVD.

Additions to Commission and Interest Group List Serves Completed

At the Annual Conference in Chicago, many of you signed up for the Commission and Interest Group (CIG) list serves either at the CIG Fair or on signup sheets circulated at the annual meetings for these groups. The task of updating these list serves accordingly was recently completed. For instructions on posting messages to the list serves, please visit this webpage and click on the link(s) for the applicable list serve(s). Instructions for subscribing and unsubscribing to these list serves are also available.

Your observance of network etiquette is encouraged and appreciated when communicating via these lists.

Thank you for your interest in and participation on these list serves!  Remember -- these list serves may not be used to promote commercial products, programs or services, job announcements, or for campaigning purposes. If you have a job announcement that you would like to post, please e-mail your announcements to us via nacada@ksu.edu for posting on the NACADA Position Announcements pages.

Using the Digest Format for List Serves

To help minimize the number of e-mails you receive that are generated from list serves, you might want to consider setting up each of your list subscriptions for the "digest" mode.  All you need to do is send an e-mail using only the following command in the body of the message, where "listname" is the list's ID (such as N-ADVADMIN for the Advising Administration Commission list serve):

SET listname DIGEST

Leave the subject line blank. Be sure to delete any signature lines and/or turn off auto-inclusion of your signature file before sending the above command. (LISTSERV treats signature lines as commands and will send error messages saying "unknown command".)

Should you set the digest mode and then decide later that you prefer the original format and want to turn off the digest mode, follow the same procedures as outlined above, but include the following command in the e-mail body:

Set listname mail

Note: A downside to using the digest format is that each time you reply to the list, all of the history that is there gets posted to the digest every time. It could make the digested e-mails too long to bother reading unless you can convince other subscribers to edit their e-mails to remove all of the history.

Note: NACADA list serves may not always support attachments, primarily due to the risk of viruses. To share information in document form with other subscribers, it is best to post it on your institution's website and provide a direct link, or ask colleagues to contact you individually to request that the information be sent to them directly. You could also include the text directly in your e-mail posting.
