NACADA Offers Academic Reform and the Student-Athlete Online Non-Credit Course

To assist in the effort for "total" understanding of the student-athlete and the NCAA Academic Reform Initiative, the NCAA and NACADA have partnered to provide opportunities for examining the broad scope of issues that contribute to responsible guidance of student-athletes. An online non-credit course has been developed that provides comprehensive information about advising issues surrounding student-athletes and a review of NCAA Division I rules and regulations applicable to students' eligibility and institutional academic success rates.

The non-credit course is available to staff and faculty at Division I institutions interested in enhancing their knowledge of the advising issues most relevant to student-athletes, and how they interact with the NCAA Division I rules and regulations concerning student eligibility. The course modules provide relevant readings and suggested best practices along with a review of one's understanding to assess comprehension of the core issues.

Registration for the Spring 2007 course is open until Friday, February 16. The fee is $35 per person. Each Division I institution may have the fee waived for one representative (including Academic Advisors) designated by the institution per academic year. The course will be offered again in 2007.

Those designated by the institution to take the Spring 2007 course with the fee waived MUST register by Friday, February 9. Additional registrants will be accepted on a first-received basis after the institutional designees are accommodated.

Visit the course webpage for more information or to register.

NACADA February Webinar

Components of a Successful Faculty Advising Program:

Institutional Commitment, Professional Development, Incentives, and Recognition

Don't miss this live Webinar Event, which will be broadcast over the Internet on Thursday, February 22, 2007

Most colleges and universities around the country understand that faculty advisors are absolutely critical to the health and well being of advising programs; therefore, faculty advising responsibilities are deeply embedded in the institutional mission. Yet surprisingly little is being done systemically to encourage quality faculty advising, to craft faculty advisor development programs, and to recognize and offer incentives for excellence in advising.

In this NACADA-sponsored Webinar presentation, Jayne Drake (Associate Professor of English and Associate Dean for Graduate Affairs, Temple University) will address four critical points:

  1. the need for broad institutional commitment to faculty advising from key stakeholders;
  2. the importance of clearly articulated mission, process, and goal statements;
  3. the components of a successful faculty advisor development program; and
  4. the incentives and "rewards" important in acknowledging and promoting excellence in advising.

Participation is limited by our Service Provider; however, there are still a few spaces available, so visit the Webinar webpage to learn more and REGISTER TODAY!

Effectively Engaging Faculty in Academic Advising Seminar

Third Annual

Effectively Engaging Faculty in Academic Advising Seminar

Burlington, VT

June 21-22, 2007

Faculty members have an essential and vital role in the academic advising experiences of students on most campuses. Data in the NACADA 2004 publication, The Status of Academic Advising, indicates that over 80% of 4-year institutions, almost 50% of public 2-year colleges, and 80% of private 2 year institutions utilize models which rely on faculty involvement in academic advising.

Since faculty play such an integral role in academic advising, it is imperative that faculty and administrators work together to ensure that faculty have the information, tools and resources to effectively engage in the advising process. This two-day seminar will provide participants with the opportunity to enhance faculty advising and programs as well as gain essential insights on ways to foster collaboration between faculty and administrators responsible for advising.

NOTE:  The seminar begins at 9 a.m. on Thursday, June 21 and ends on Friday, June 22 at 3:00 p.m.   The ending time is a change from what was previously published, so please adjust your departure plans accordingly.

Summer Institutes

21st Annual

Academic Advising Summer Institutes

Burlington, VT & Salt Lake City, UT

The most comprehensive consideration of academic advising available, the 2007 Summer Institutes will be held in both Burlington, VT, June 24-29 and Salt Lake City, UT, July 29-Aug. 3, 2007. The intensive, week-long Institutes are centered around seeking and disseminating information in general sessions, workshops, topical sessions and small group discussions, with the goal of developing practical, individualized Action Plans for enhancement of academic advising on your campuses. Participants in the Burlington Institute will want to consider attending the Effectively Engaging Faculty Seminar as well.

The Institute is designed for individuals or teams who have responsibility for academic advising, such as:

  • Teams or individuals from an institution desiring to refine or redesign campus advising services
  • Academic advising campus task force members
  • Advising program directors
  • Campus administrators including deans or vice presidents with responsibility for advising

APPLY FOR A SUMMER INSTITUTE SCHOLARSHIP! This scholarship waives the early member registration fee (covers all program materials, several meals, and special events) to the Academic Advising Summer Institute. Individuals or their sponsoring institutions are responsible for travel and lodging costs, meals, and incidental expenses not covered by the registration fee. Applications for Summer Institute Scholarships are due March 5 (for either institute) and May 1 (for the Salt Lake City Institute only).

To review special benefits to your program and a list of topics covered at the Institutes, see the Summer Institute webpage.

PLEASE NOTE:  The registration form in the PRINTED brochure did not show an option for Summer Institute ONLY at the Burlington, Vermont location.  The registration form on this webpage has been modified to include that option.  If you are using the printed brochure form, just select the correct fee under the Salt Lake section and write BURLINGTON on the form.  We apologize for this inconvenience.
