Effectively Engaging Faculty in Academic Advising Seminar

Effectively Engaging Faculty in Academic Advising Seminar
June 22-23, 2006 in Portsmouth, VA

Focused on enhancing all aspects of faculty advising, this seminar will provide you with invaluable information and strategies for engaging faculty, providing quality professional development to faculty, and evaluating and rewarding faculty advisors.

Since faculty play such an integral role in academic advising, it is imperative that faculty and administrators work together to ensure that faculty have the information, tools and resources to effectively engage in the advising process.

Who should take advantage of this opportunity?

  • teaching faculty
  • departmental/institutional advising coordinators
  • advising administrators
  • academic administrators
  • student affairs administrators

Areas of study will center around:

  • Definition and Philosophy of Advising; Theoretical Foundation; Components of Advising including Teaching/Learning of Advising and Advising Syllabus
  • Roles and Responsibilities of Faculty Advisors
  • Training And Development Issues - including motivational issues
  • Faculty Rewards and Recognition
  • Evaluation of Faculty Advising and Faculty Advisors

Represent your institution or bring a team!  You will have the opportunity to network, discuss issues and concerns specific to faculty at your type of institution, and develop strategies to take back to your own campus.

Registrations are being accepted now!

Come for the Seminar and stay for the Portsmouth Summer Institute! (see below)  Learn more here.

NACADA Academic Advising Summer Institutes

The most comprehensive consideration of academic advising available, the 2006 Summer Institutes will be held in Portsmouth, VA (June 25-30) and Madison, WI (July 30-August 4). The intensive, week-long Institutes are centered around seeking and disseminating information in general sessions, workshops, topical sessions and small group discussions, with the goal of developing practical, individualized Action Plans for enhancement of academic advising on your campuses.  If you participate in the Portsmouth Institute, you will want to consider attending the Effectively Engaging Faculty Seminar as well.

The Institutes appeal to a wide spectrum of higher education professionals:

  • Faculty appreciate learning about the broad scope of academic advising, how they might best provide advising, and how to effectively engage their colleagues.
  • Administrators (Presidents, Deans, Assistant/Associate Deans, Department Heads, student services Directors, academic program Directors) often focus on delivery systems, recognition and reward, training issues, and outcomes assessment.
  • Experienced advisors focus on how they might improve advising at their institution.
  • Newer advisors gain understanding of all that is in front of them and how they can use their talents to contribute to student success.

The collaborative format of the Institute assures that each individual gets the assistance they desire to ensure a memorable and rewarding experience while establishing a nationwide network of colleagues for future contact. You may come as in individual or join with your campus colleages and come as a team.

Summer Institutes are a great way to "Build the Next Generation of Academic Advisors."  If you are a new professional, attending a Summer Institute can be a tremendous opportunity to learn all you need to know about your new career. If you work with new advising professionals, the Summer Institutes can provide new ideas for training, involving, mentoring, and ensuring success for new professionals and you!

Registrations are limited for each Institute.  Don't delay - take advantage of the early discounted fee by registering by June 1 for Portsmouth and July 9 for Madison!

"It's the most motivational experience I've had.  As a administrator of 19 years, I recommend the Institute to everyone from new advisors to longtime administrators." - Joan E. Moore, Virginia Tech

Potential Interest Group Formed

The NACADA Commission and Interest Group Division has received a request to form the Large Universities Potential Interest Group. This group will be focused on providing NACADA members from large universities the opportunity to make connections, discuss current issues, share ideas and best practices, and learn about other programs, given the unique challenges faced by advising professionals at large universities (20,000+ undergraduate enrollment). Myla Rugge (University of Washington) intiated the formation of this potential Interest Group and has volunteered to serve as its Interim Chair. A short description of the focus of this potential Interest Group is available here and a listserve for this group will also soon be available.

Members interested in this potential Interest Group will have an opportunity to meet at the NACADA National Conference in Indianapolis in October. This group will also be given an opportunity to participate in the annual Commission and Interest Group Fair at the Conference. Plan to visit this table at the CIG Fair and attend the organizational meeting.

If you have questions or would like to become involved with this group prior to the fall Conference, please contact Myla Rugge. To designate this potential Interest Group as one of your four chosen Commission or Interest Group preferences in your member record, please e-mail NACADA.

Name Change for Advising Urban Affairs Majors Potential Interest Group

The Advising Urban Affairs Majors Potential Interest Group has changed its name to "Advising Public & Urban Affairs Majors". After consulting with colleagues around the country, chair Adam Sikula feels that this name change will help to gain some much needed support for this potential Interest Group. If you have questions or would like to become involved with this group prior to the National Conference this fall, please contact Adam Sikula. To designate this potential Interest Group as one of your four chosen Commission or Interest Group preferences in your member record, please e-mail NACADA.
