NACADA
CHOIR: Join the choir in performing at the second
plenary session. We will practice 4:30-5:30 p.m. on Wednesday,
October 1, and then get a quick bite to eat before coming
back to enjoy the opening plenary session at 7 p.m. We will
not perform at the first plenary, just the second one on
Thursday morning. Contact Bruce
Norris if you are interested, Bruce will share
information with you regarding the sheet music. Join the
choir for a lot of fun and camaraderie!
COMMON
READING DISCUSSION: “Racial bias,
whether at the individual or collective levels, is hard
to see and harder to talk about” (Bensimon, 2007,
p. 454). If you work with students, then you should attend
NACADA’s first Common Reading Discussion on Thursday,
October 2 from 6:30-8:00 p.m. The discussion will
focus on the issues of diversity presented by Estela Bensimon
in The
Underestimated Significance of Practitioner Knowledge in
the Scholarship on Student Success. The Review
of Higher Education, 30 (4), 441-469.
During
the discussion of this article, participants will:
Consider their gaps in understanding the behavior patterns
of students from racial and ethnic groups other than their
own, and discuss ways to increase their multicultural competence.
Discuss how the significance and impact of academic advising
relate to issues of racial equity in higher education. |

will begin their two-years of work together at the Annual
Conference in Chicago. ELP activities will include:

The
Annual Conference will be an excellent opportunity for you
to collaborate with Commission and Interest Group
members.

and Interest Group Fair on Thursday,
October 2, 7:15-8:15 a.m. Visit the various
tables and converse with the Chairs and members of the
Commissions and Interest Groups.
- Annual Commission and
Interest Group Meetings are scheduled
throughout the Conference. Check your program for those
meetings of interest to you, or visit the meeting
schedule summary.
- Learn what is going on in the Commissions and Interest
Groups - projects, activities, list serve discussions,
new initiatives!
- Volunteer to help with activities or serve on a
committee within a Commission or Interest Group.
- Consider running for leadership positions within
the Commissions.
- Meet and collaborate with colleagues on future conference
presentations or articles for the Clearinghouse or
Academic Advising Today.

On November 6, NACADA Emerging Leader Jose
Rodriguez (Florida International University) will
explore the art and science of communication, including
specific behaviors and theories designed to elicit significant
conversations. Jose will discuss communication theory, verbal
and nonverbal communication, and counseling theory and practice,
with the intent of providing advisors with specific practices
and theories they can use in their day-to-day lives. He
will explore how significant conversations with students
can also be a transformational experience that goes beyond
prescriptive and developmental advising.

Conferences are gearing up for 2009 season!
See the list
of dates and places and make your plans to submit
a proposal for your region. Team up with colleagues or share
one of your own presentations! The Region Conferences
are great places to meet others who have similar challenges. Each
region chooses a "Best of Region," and those presenters
receive a presentation spot and support for the Annual Conference
next fall. The dates and online form will be ready the last
part of September. |

Va., and Austin, Texas, this summer. Look at what some of
the participants envision as their Action
Plans - projects they are implementing on their
campuses right now. Summer Institute sites
are being chosen and will be available the last part of September. For
an example of what will be on the program, check out the Summer
Institute Webpage. Tentative dates are the
last week in June and the last week in July, 2009. |

| Clearinghouse of Academic Advising Resources |
|
The
NACADA Research Committee announces a Request For
Proposals (RFP) for NACADA grants that support
advising research. Grants
up to $5,000 are available to support a
single-year proposal. Practicing professionals (administrators
and faculty), as well as graduate students seeking support
for dissertation research, are eligible.
The Research Committee
has two deadlines for 2009 funding proposals: November
1, 2008 and March
15, 2009. Click here for

Journal Book Review |

Consider reviewing
a book for the NACADA Journal.
Find available titles posted on the Book
Review Website. Reviewers must be current NACADA
members; books requested now count for the 2008-09 member
year. Reviewers have three months from the receipt of the
book to read and write the review. The book becomes the
property of the reviewer upon acceptance of the review for
publication.

election information, and an online nomination recommendation
form. Nomination forms can be submitted either
electronically, sent by fax or mail, or turned in at the
Conference. All nominations will be due to the Executive
Office by
