Learning Reconsidered 2:  A Practical Guide to Implementing a Campus-Wide Focus on the Student Experience

edited by Richard P. Keeling, M.D.

Learning Reconsidered 2 has put academic learning and student development processes together in a format that requires all the resources of the academy to function together in an integrated manner on behalf of students.

Learning Reconsidered 2 is a blueprint for action. It shows how to create the dialogue, tools, and materials necessary to put into practice the recommendations in Learning Reconsidered. This companion book brings together new authors, discipline-specific examples, and models for applying the theories in the original publication to move beyond traditional ideas of separate learning inside and outside the classroom.

Foundations of Academic Advising - CD Series
CD2 - Academic Advising Delivery Models

"Organizational structure is the framework for delivering advising services to students. As such, it is one of the important building blocks for an effective advising program, regardless of whether the program is defined at the department, college, campus, or institutional level" (Pardee, 2004). This CD, which builds on the groundwork laid in CD1 What is Academic Advising?, explains the seven most widely used advising delivery models (self-contained, faculty only, satellite, total intake, dual, split, supplementary) and discusses why they are an important consideration when assessing, evaluating or re-evaluating any advising system.

What is Academic Advising? Pocket Guide

A new Pocket Guide has been developed from the content of the Foundations in Academic Advising CD1 - What is Academic Advising?  This Pocket Guide contains information from each of the modules of CD1.  The Table of Contents is listed below.

  • The History and Definitions of Academic Advising
  • The Process and Content of Academic Advising
  • The Pedagogy and Outcomes of Academic Advising
  • Understanding Advising on Your Campus

Whether an accompaniment to the CD or a stand alone publication, the Pocket Guide is a great resource for an introduction to or a refresher on the basics of academic advising, especially for new professionals, faculty advisors, and administrators.

Soon to be available - Orders will be taken at the Annual Conference in Indianapolis.

Academic Advising: New Insights for Teaching and Learning in the First Year

Mary Stuart Hunter, Betsy McCalla-Wriggins, & Eric R. White, Editors

A joint publication of the National Resource Center for The First-Year Experience and Students in Transition and the National Academic Advising Association (NACADA)

This new monograph challenges readers to embrace the tremendous potential that academic advising has for educating today's college students and adds significantly to the engaging dialogue on advising as teaching. Chapter authors explore the advising as teaching and learning paradigm, examine current student demographics, and address learning patterns, self-assessment, and technology as key components of advising. Chapters also explore academic advising before enrollment and beyond the advising office, as well as the critical issue of advising assessment. The needs of diverse populations of first-year students are also addressed.

Network with your Colleagues -- Join a Commission and/or Interest Group Today!

A great way to network with your colleagues is to join a NACADA Commission or Interest Group (IG). Members can choose any combination of Commissions and IGs in which they would like to have official membership, up to a total of four (4) selections. This official affiliation primarily identifies those Commissions and/or IGs for which you would have voting privileges, receive periodic electronic newsletters and updates, and be eligible to hold an elected or appointed position within, such as serving on a committee or serving as chair. Please note that you can be informally involved with as many other Commissions or IGs as you like, such as joining list serves, attending meetings, etc. We encourage you to review the available Commissions and Interest Groups and join those of interest to you.

If you wish to change your preferred Commission and/or IG choices, you can easily do so by completing the online form, or indicating your preferences on your membership renewal form. If you previously made your selections but do not recall which Commissions or IGs were designated, you can simply indicate your current preferences via this form and previous choices will be replaced. Please be sure to include the requested identification information so the appropriate member record is updated.

NOTE: Your official Commission designations as of Friday, January 26, 2007 will determine the Commission Chairs for whom you will be eligible to vote in the 2007 elections.
