For
the most complete consideration of advising available, you and/or
your team should meet in either St. Paul, MN, or Colorado Springs,
CO, at this year's week-long Summer Institutes. Developing strong
networks among colleagues at the Institutes will be only one of
the benefits to you, your team, and your program. Expert faculty
will share pertinent information in a variety of ways - through
general sessions, workshops, topical sessions, and small group discussions.
You can't afford to miss this chance to make a difference at your
institution through the knowledge you will gain.
Each
year NACADA sponsors several member surveys that help better meet
your needs. The last survey, sponsored by the Publications Advisory
Board, queried members regarding their publication needs. Find results
of this and member surveys on assessment of advising, perceptions
of group dynamics in the workplace, and other survey topics in the
Clearinghouse at http://www.nacada.ksu.edu/Clearinghouse/Research_Related/Survey/index.htm.
The Commission on Undecided and Exploratory Students (CUES)
is sponsoring an institution-based survey regarding
undergraduate students who change majors -- an
area that has not been studied on a national basis in over 15 years.
On February 14th one NACADA
member from each of over 1500 regionally accredited U.S. undergraduate
institutions will receive a short survey authored by Virginia Gordon
and CUES chair Beth Higgins. The member will be asked to locate
and report institutional data regarding the number of students who
changed majors at their institution during the 2003-2004 academic
year. Want to be your institution's representative for this ground
breaking research project? Email miller@ksu.edu
by February 8.
February
is the time that students, from freshmen to seniors, think about
their careers. This month the Clearinghouse features Career
Resources that will help you advise those students contemplating
their major to those preparing to enter the working world. From
What Can I Do With A Major In.? and Five Signs You
Should Change Your Major to Sample Interview Questions,
find the Career Resources to assist you at http://www.nacada.ksu.edu/Clearinghouse/AdvisingIssues/careeradvising.htm.
Anticipating
some "quiet time" in February? Expand your horizons
by reviewing a book for the NACADA Journal. Recently received

Find
these and many more books at http://www.nacada.ksu.edu/Journal/broverview.htm.
NACADA members may review and publish one book review per academic
year. Completed reviews are due three months after receipt of the
book. Members keep the book after the completed review has been
accepted.
As
a source of inspiration and networking for advising administrators,
a new "Advising
Administrators' Tips" web page has been initiated
by Linda
Chalmers, Chair of the Advising Administration
Commission. This web page is accessible from the "Resources"
page at www.nacada.ksu.edu/Commissions/C05/resources.htm
on the Commission's web site. Perhaps the tips posted will provide
you with new ideas or assist you in solving a situation you may
currently face. If you would like to contribute a tip for advising
administrators on the posted topics, contact Linda Chalmers at Linda.Chalmers@utsa.edu.
A new monograph, Advising
Transfer Students: Issues & Strategies (#12 in the
NACADA monograph series), is now available. To purchase your copy,
visit http://www.nacada.ksu.edu/Forms/puborderform.pdf.
A synopsis of this monograph follows.
Students
transferring from one institution to another continue to be a
significant part of our college populations, and they consume
considerable amounts of time and effort by advisors at both two-year
and four-year institutions. Transfer students constitute a population
that already brings some higher education experience with them
yet they are new to the transfer institution. Advising Transfer
Students: Issues & Strategies identifies many of the
issues related to the transfer population and provides a wide
range of potential services, programs, and other resources that
serve to strengthen the overall higher education experience for
transfers.

Please welcome Jodi Malmgren
as the new Chair for the Study Abroad Advising Interest
Group. Harold "Nick" Conrad and Joe Rojo, who served as
co-chairs while getting this interest group off the ground last
year, have recently stepped down from this leadership role. Jodi
currently serves as Director of Advising for the Learning Abroad
Center at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities in Minneapolis.
Contact information for Jodi can be found on this interest group's
web site at www.nacada.ksu.edu/InterestGroups/C38/index.htm.

A
new interest group called "Advising
Urban Affairs Majors Interest Group" is being established.
Adam Sikula, Director
of the Student Advising Center at the University of Nevada in Las
Vegas, initiated the formation of this new group and has volunteered
to serve as its first chair. Members interested in this new interest
group will have an opportunity to meet at the NACADA National Conference
in Las Vegas this fall. This new group will also be included in
the annual Commission and Interest Group Fair at the conference.
Plan to visit this table at the CIG Fair and attend the organizational
meeting.
If
you have questions or would like to become involved with this new
group prior to the fall conference, please contact Adam Sikula whose
contact information can be found at www.nacada.ksu.edu/InterestGroups/C39/index.htm.

In
response to the 2002 association restructuring, the NACADA Executive
Office has recently reorganized to better meet member needs through
implementation of the NACADA Strategic Plan. Office operations are
now divided into three areas: Administration & Operations, Resources
& Services, and Events Management.
To
support this reorganization, Julia Wolf has been promoted as the
NACADA Assistant Director for Administration & Operations and
Marsha Miller is the Assistant Director for Resources & Services.
NACADA event management will continue to be coordinated by the team
of Nancy Barnes, Diane Matteson, and Rhonda Baker. Bobbie Flaherty,
NACADA Executive Director, continues to oversee the association
and Charlie Nutt, NACADA Associate Director, manages office operations.
In
addition, the NACADA Board approved a new position, Coordinator
of Educational Programming, within the Resources & Services
team. This position will be instrumental to the implementation of
the association’s professional development programming initiatives,
many of which should be delivered via the Web. This position also
will coordinate the NACADA awards program, the Academic Advising
News, and member Highlights.
A
nationwide search for the Coordinator of Educational Programming
concluded recently with the position offered to Leigh Cunningham,
Kansas State University. Leigh, a longtime NACADA member, has extensive
experience in providing online learning opportunities. Her expertise
lies in multicultural diversity and she authored the Clearinghouse
overview on that topic at http://www.nacada.ksu.edu/Clearinghouse/AdvisingIssues/Multicultural.htm.
Leigh’s background in advising at both the community college
and university levels will be an asset in this position. Leigh will
join the Executive Office staff on March 1.
Would you like to recognize a colleague who does an exemplary job
with academic advising on your campus? Does your campus have an
outstanding advising program currently being implemented? Are you
planning to submit an award nomination, but just haven't done so
yet? The deadline is MONDAY, MARCH
7, 2005, for submitting nominations for the NACADA
2005 Awards Program.
All
nomination materials must be received by March
7, including the appropriate number of support documents.
Please closely review the applicable information in the 2005 Awards
Call before submitting your final nomination materials (there are
changes in the criteria for certain awards). To view the Awards Call for Nominations on our web site, including detailed
information on all award categories, applicable eligibility criteria/changes,

forms, go to www.nacada.ksu.edu/Awards/AwardsCall.htm.
The
March 7 deadline applies to all award categories except Retiree
Recognition, which are due June
6, 2006.
A new list serve has been established for the Peer
Advising and Mentoring Interest Group. NACADA members
and/or colleagues interested in advising issues involving peer advising
and mentoring are encouraged to subscribe. This new list serve will
provide an excellent opportunity for advising professionals to network
with colleagues across the country and to share concerns that have
a unique focus on peer advising and mentoring. To subscribe, please
visit www.nacada.ksu.edu/InterestGroups/C37/listserve.htm
on our web site. Instructions for posting messages to this new list serve
are also provided.
For
a list of other advising-related list serves, visit www.nacada.ksu.edu/listserve/index.htm.
Paper
renewal packets were mailed in mid-January to those having a membership
expiration date of March 1, 2005.
Many members have already completed renewal forms and submitted
them with payment to the Executive Office. If you have not done
so yet, please complete and return your renewal form soon to ensure
continued membership benefits.

Highlights is a monthly summary of NACADA news and events
designed to inform members via one consolidated e-mail.
