Operating Principles for NACADA’s
Region 9, Steering Committee

Region 9 Governance 

Region 9 includes NACADA members from academic institutions in California, Hawaii and Nevada.   

Region 9 Steering Committee Mission Statement

The mission of the Steering Committee for NACADA’s Pacific Region 9 is to promote and support the academic advising efforts of its members in Region 9.  The Region 9 Steering Committee will be responsive to the region’s members in accordance to their needs.  The Region 9 Steering Committee will promote and encourage membership in NACADA.  The Region 9 Steering Committee will assist with the professional development of its members through conferences, the expansion and distribution of resources, presentation of awards and recognitions, and assistance with grants in order to create opportunities to related organizations.

Nature of the Operating Principles 

NACADA’s Region 9 Steering Committee will be organized and work under these Operating Principles, upon the approval by the Region 9 NACADA members.

I. Steering Committee  

The steering committee will meet in person at the National and Regional Conferences.  Additionally, teleconference meetings may be held periodically, as needed and determined by the Region 9 Chair. 

The steering committee will be responsible for:

  • Promoting the models, principles, and progressive practices of academic advising
  • Supporting the professional development of advisors in the region
  • Encouraging active participation among region members
  • Maintaining lines of communication between NACADA and state and allied advising organizations
  • Administering the Region 9 budget
  • Promoting and encouraging membership in NACADA 

II. Steering Committee Membership and Responsibilities

The members of the steering committee will be appointed by the Region 9 chair, who will also serve as the Steering Committee Chair, in accordance with the principles outlined below.  Steering committee members will serve terms of two years and must be current members of NACADA. 

Region 9 Steering Committee Members:  

  • Region 9 Chair (will be the de facto and de jure chair of the committee)
  • Past Region 9 Chair
  • Current Region 9 Conference Chair(s)
  • Past Region 9 Conference Chair
  • Future Region 9 Conference Chair (when possible)
  • Communication Coordinator
  • Membership  and Awards Coordinator
  • Budget Coordinator
  • 2 State Liaisons from California, Hawaii, and Nevada

Steering Committee Members’ Responsibilities:

  • Region 9 Chair
    • Steering Committee Chair
    • Regional reporting to the Executive Office
    • Region budget
    • Approval of regional conference budget
    • Appointment of Steering Committee members
    • Coordination of Steering Committee meetings and teleconferences
    • Assist in the planning of the regional conference(s)
    • Direct all activities of Region 9
    • Attend Regional and National Conferences

      Past Region 9 Chair
  • Provide support to the region chair and region conference chairs
  • Attend Regional and National Conferences (when possible)
  • Current Region 9 Conference Chair(s)
    • Coordinate all functions of the Regional Conference
    • Select subcommittee chairs for the conference
    • Serve as liaison between conference committee and Region steering committee providing updates and news about the Regional Conference
    • Conference budget and theme approval
    • Attend Regional Conference
    • Attend National Conference (when possible)
  • Past Region 9 Conference Chair
    • Provide support to Current and Future Conference Chairs
    • Assist steering committee members as needed
    • Attend Regional and National Conferences (when possible)
  • Future Region 9 Conference Chair (when possible)
    • Support current conference chair
    • Review procedures/planning of current conference
    • Attend Regional Conference
    • Attend National Conference (when possible)
  • Communication Coordinator
    • Ensure accuracy of Region 9 Website
    • Update/refresh Region 9 website information in collaboration with NACADA Executive Office
    • Coordinate completion of Region 9 Newsletter throughout the year
    • Attend Regional and National Conferences (when possible)
  • Membership and Awards Coordinator
    • Coordinate Membership campaigns within Region 9 to increase growth of   NACADA membership
    • Organize the Region 9 Awards Program
    • Ensure that funds are distributed to award winners, notifying the national NACADA office of the recipients each year
    • Provide Communication Chair with updates of Awards and Scholarships to be highlighted within the Region 9 Website
    • Incorporate a Conference Service Element to be coordinated in conjunction with the Regional Conference. The purpose of this Conference Service Element within the Regional Conference is to encourage the participation of the regional attendees to impact the global community 
    • Attend Regional and National Conferences (when possible)
  • Budget Coordinator
    • Contribute to the goals setting, strategy, and budget for Region 9
    • Assist Region Chair and Conference Chair in planning for the annual budget allocations
    • Resolve reimbursement requests
    • Reconcile annual Region and Region Conference Budgets
    • Attend Regional and National Conferences (when possible)
  • State Liaisons
    • Present state issues relevant to NACADA to the steering committee
    • Contribute to the goals setting, strategy, and budget for Region 9
    • Represent NACADA at the state level at conferences/meetings and promote NACADA and the value of academic advising within represented area (when possible)
    • Encourage participation in the NACADA awards programs within represented area
    • Attend Regional and National Conferences (when possible)

III. Annual Region 9 Conference

Annual Region 9 conferences are held in locations accessible to all areas of Region 9. When possible, the conference will be held in the following Region 9 locations:

  • California
  • Hawaii
  • Nevada

The Region 9 Chair will work with the areas in determining locations for the Region Conference according to the needs at that specific time.  The goal for the conferences will be for the conference locations to rotate within the Region 9 areas.  If for any reason an area cannot host, the area that is available will become the host site.  In addition, at times of economic issues, multiple regional conferences may be held to reduce traveling expenses.
